  • A parametric study for analytical correction using measurement results was performed to minimize errors in the predictions of column shortening in RC tall building. The parameters of the column shortening analytical correction are the execution standard of analytical correction, the value of the analytical correction, and the measurement location, and the analytical correction models with the parameters were applied to the construction sequence analysis of a 41-story RC building to compare and analyze the correction effect according to the parameter. The reduction ratio of the error value for each floor was compared with the number of corrections and the total corrected value, and it was confirmed that the error tended to be minimized when the execution standard of analytical correction was performed based on a regular interval, when the analysis correction value was corrected by the error value, and when the measurement position was measured every floor. From this, it was confirmed that the most appropriate analytical correction model can be derived by applying multiple analytical correction models to the actual analysis model.

  • The causes of column shrinkage and the codes that have been studied up to now are discussed. The documents mentioned in the code deal with the drying shrinkage, creep, compressive strength and elastic modulus of the specimen, and the elastic deformation calculated from the structural analysis. However, the deformation due to the temperature caused by the long term monitoring is less than that caused by the factors generated by the previous studies. In the previous studies, it was found that dehydration shrinkage, creep, and elastic deformation were not considered for temperature-induced deformation, while for the specimen experiments, the temperature-related items were replaced with the humidity-related terms The compensation value by the proposed equation showed error of 4.9 mm in the upper direction and 1.0mm in the lower direction when calculating column shortening, and it was found that its value by the proposed equation almost coincided with the measurement value in Site. Therefore, it is necessary to further study the temperature that can be omitted in calculating the existing column shortening, to consider the influence factors, and to supplement the criteria for the temperature measurement of the structure as well as the specimen tests.

  • In this paper, the prediction method of the differential column shortening for cracked reinforced concrete tall buildings due to the construction sequence is presented. The cracked sectional properties from the strain and curvature of the sectional centroid is directly used. And the stiffness matrix of concrete elements considering the axial strain-curvature interaction effect is adopted. The creep and shrinkage properties used in the predictions were calculated in accordance with ACI 209, CEB-FIP 1990, and B3 model code. In order to demonstrate the validity of this algorithm, the prediction by the proposed method are compared with both the results of the in-situ test and the results by other simplified method. The proposed method is in good agreement with experimental results, and better than the simplified method.

  • The KLCC Petronas Tower 2, one of the world tallest twin reinforced concrete towers constructed in Kuala Lumpur, Malysia, was instrumented during construction for the measurement of vertical time-dependent deformation of columns and corewall. Field measurements were made by means of vibrating wire strain gauges at the corewall, tower and bustle perimeter columns at selected floor levels of the building. Parallel to this observation, laboratory tests were performed on concrete cylinders made in the field in order to obtain the variations of concrete compressive strengths, elastic moduli, strains of creep and shrinkage with time. Monitored vertical deformations are in a good agreement with the prediction based on actual construction sequence and concrete properties from laboratory tests, as well as the analytical results reflected in actual column compensation of the building.

  • Highrise concrete buildings are very sensitive to cumulative and differential shortening of their vertical element such as wall and columns. Inelastic deformation due to creep and shrinkage consist of various factors and load history af actual building is very complicated. Therefore, for the accurate prediction and compensation of axial shortening, special efforts in design and construction phase are required to ensure long-term serviceability and strength requirement. In this paper, axial shortening estimation and compensation procedure is presented, which utilized experimentally determined concrete properties and preliminary load history and computerized approach, in case of Plaza Rakyat office tower, 79-story reinforced concrete building under construction in Malaysia.

  • A Hybrid Wall System(HWS) building, Kolon Bundang Tripolis was instrumented to measure the vertical deformation of core-walls and columns. The vertical shortening of individual members were measured at selected floor levels such as 1F, 12F, 25F, and 34F. The measurement has been taken during one year after the construction was started. Together with the measurement, concrete property tests were performed in the laboratory using the concrete obtained in the field. The measured vertical shortenings were compared with the calculated prediction values and the satisfactory agreement was obtained.

  • Axial shortenings of wall and columns were measured on level 2 and precise leveling between wall and columns were surveyed on level 5 at the Galleria Palace structure. Measured and surveyed shortening values were compared with the analysis results at the earlier stage on the process of construction for evaluating the predicted values. Though measured values represent relatively low and scattered values at earlier construction stage, probably they show similar slope curves to predicted ones with the progress of time.

  • Due to recent trends of the atypical plan shapes and the zoning construction in high-rise buildings, the building stability under construction is arising as an important issue for design and construction plan. To ensure the stability under construction, the differential column shortening and the lateral movements with unbalanced distributions of self-weight of structure members and the load flows before completion of member connections and lateral load resisting system should be checked by construction sequence analysis. This paper presents the scheme of zone-based construction sequence analysis, to check the stability of high-rise building under construction. This scheme is applied to the construction sequence analysis for real high-rise building under construction.

  • This paper deals with the analysis for column shortening of RC frame structure considering the construction sequences. The time-dependent effects of concrete are taken into consideration in this study to simulate the actual structural behavior. The stiffness matrix of a beam element is derived on the bases of the layer approach, dividing a section with imaginary layers. Creep and shrinkage strains at each layer are calculated by using the first-order algorithm based on the expansion of creep compliance. Finally, the correlation studies with the purpose of analyzing the time-dependent behavior of building structure are conducted using the analytical model proposed in this study.
