  • Nirogen dioxide is rapidly converted to nitric oxide by the water absortbed on a Linde Molecular Sieve column. The resultant wave form is indistinguishable from that of pure nitric oxide introduced to the column. Thus, by conversion to the low boiling nitric oxide, the complication of oxidation of organic partitioning liquids is obviated.

  • The analysis of steel-concrete composite joints presents some particular aspects that increase their complexity when compared to bare steel joints. In particular, the influence of slab reinforcement and column concrete encasement clearly change the moment-rotation response of the joint. Starting from an energy approach developed in the context of steel joints, an extension to composite joints is presented in this paper that is able to provide closed-form analytical solutions. In addition, the possibility of tri-linear or non-linear component behaviour is also incorporated in the model, enabling adequate treatment of the influence of cracked concrete in tension and the softening response of the column web in compression. This methodology is validated through comparison with experimental tests carried out at the University of Coimbra.

  • A reversed-phase high-performace liquid chromatographic method was developed to determine the optical purity of metoprolol enantiomers. The enantiomers were converted to diastereomeric derivatives using (-)-menthyl chloroformate reagent. Separation of the enantiomers as diastereomers was achieved by reversed-phase HPLC within 30 min using Inertsil C8 column. This method allowed determination of 0.05% of either enantiomer in the presence of its stereoisomer and method validation showed adequate linearity over the required range. Owing to the reaction condition during the derivatization with (-)-menthyl chloroformate, the possibility of racemization had to be established. Different ratios of (S)-(-)-metoprolol and (R)-(+)-metoprolol were prepared. Enantiomeric separation of these mixtures took place on a chiralcel OD column or, after derivatization with (-)-menthyl chloroformate, on a C8 column. The results form the these two independent separation systems were compared with trace racemization and were in very good agreement. No racemization was found during the experiment.

  • In this study, a well-established model and a new simplified version of it, that help avoid collapses in reinforced concrete structures during strong earthquakes, are presented and discussed. Using this model, the initial formation of plastic hinges and the final concentration of the damages only in beams are accurately assured. The model also assures that the columns and the beam-column joints can remain intact. This model can be applied for the design of modern R/C structures, as well as for the design of strengthening schemes of old R/C structures by the use of reinforced concrete jackets. The model can also predict the form of earthquake damages in old structures but also earthquake damages in the modern structures.

  • The huge amount of solvents used in the semi-conductor and display industry typically result in waste of valuable solvents which often form complex azeotropic mixtures. This study explored a recovery process of a quaternary waste solvent, comprising methyl 2-hydroxybutyrate, propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate, ethyl lactate, and ethyl-3-ethoxy propionate. In this study, a novel shortcut column method with a graphical approach was exploited for the distillation column design of complex quaternary azeotropic mixtures. As a result, the proposed shortcut method and design procedure solved the complex separation paths successfully with less computational efforts while achieving all requirements for component purity.

  • Various methods have been used to strengthen structures against earthquakes. Isolator systems are among the methods to control the structure's response. Instead of increasing the strength and capacity of the structure, these systems react to earthquakes. In this paper, an isolator system was investigated with the flexible piers of ∨ and ∧ elements, which were perpendicular to each other and connected by a rod hinged at both ends. The behavior of the isolator system was studied. Many structures have non-rigid connections; the effect of this issue was considered in the pendulum column's performance in this paper. Its mathematical equations were derived, solved with MATLAB software, and compared with ABAQUS results. Later on, the isolator system was investigated during different earthquakes. The results show that this mechanism is suitable as an isolator. The period was found to be longer in the flexible pier form. The flexible piers have an influential role in the system's response by reducing the system's stiffness considerably. Among the different damping ratios, those with more than 15% had better results. Finally, the tested model verified the theory.

  • Molecular property as well as biological activities of bombesin-like substance (BBS-LS) isolated from the skin of B. orientalis in Korea was compared with those of synthetic BBS-14. BBS-LS in the crude extract was applied on a Sephadex G-50, superfine column $(1.6{\times}112\;cm)$. On chromatogram, the first peak (3.5% of BBS-LS) was found ahead of synthetic GRP-27, and the second peak (rest) between synthetic GRP-27 and synthetic BBS-14. The main form of BBS-LS was successfully purified by using a column of alkaline alumina followed by sequential gel-filtrations on a column of Sephadex G-10, fine and a column of Sephadex G-50, superfine. Chromatographic analysis of the purified BBS-LS using a column of Sephadex G-50, superfine and reversed phase HPLC revealed that the main form of BBS-LS in the skin of B. orientalis could be distinctly different from either BBS-14 or GRP-27 in molecular size. The purified BBS-LS exerted biological activities quite identical to those of synthetic BBS-14. The results of the present investigation indicate that the skin of B. orientalis contains BBS-LS composed of two distinct forms. The main form of BBS-LS purified in the present study is heterogenous to both synthetic BBS-14 and GRP-27 in molecular size but identical to BBS in biological activities.

  • A method to analyze additives in a polyester resin has been studied by utilizing a centrifuge and a thin layer chromatography. Identification of the separated organic and inorganic compounds were carried out by spectrophotometers, such as NMR, UV-VIS, IR and XRD. For the polyester resin studied in this research contained organic and inorganic compounds which were found to be a dimer form of 2-phenylbenzoazole and an anatase form of $TiO_2$, respectively.
