In this paper, a collision accident of a container/Ro-Ro ship was numerically analyzed. A container trailer collided with a longitudinal bulkhead of the ship in the accident, which constituted a longitudinal wall of a heavy fuel oil tank. Due to the accident, the bulkhead plate was ruptured and the heavy fuel oil spilled out of the tank. The detailed information regarding the collision velocity and the mass of the trailer was not provided. Therefore, several collision accident scenarios were constructed based upon the arrangement of the ramp way. Each collision accident scenario was analyzed to predict the extents of damage using a commercial numerical package, ABAQUS. Based on the analysis results it is proposed how to minimize the extents of damage. Through the investigations performed in this study it was found that the understandings of various damages due to collision accidents and the developments of structural design guidance against collision are necessary for the betterment of Container/RO-RO ships' performance.

This paper provides the prediction of ultimate longitudinal strengths of the hull girders of a very large crude carrier considering probabilistic damage extent due to collision and grounding accidents based on IMO Guidelines (2003). The probabilistic density functions of damage extent are expressed as a function of non-dimensional damage variables. The accumulated probabilistic levels of 10%, 30%, 50%, and 70% are taken into account for the estimation of damage extent. The ultimate strengths have been calculated using the in-house software called Ultimate Moment Analysis of Damaged Ships which is based on the progressive collapse method, with a new convergence criterion of force vector equilibrium. Damage indices are provided for several probable heeling angles from $0^{\circ}$ (sagging) to $180^{\circ}$ (hogging) due to collision- and grounding-induced structural failures and consequent flooding of compartments. This paper proves from the residual strength analyses that the second moment of area of a damage section can be a reliable index for the estimation of the residual ultimate strength. A simple polynomial formula is also proposed based on minimum residual ultimate strengths.

This paper provides prediction of ultimate longitudinal strengths of hull girder of a VLCC considering probabilistic damage extents due to collision and grounding accidents based on IMO Guideline(2003). The probability density functions of damage extents are expressed as a function of nondimensional damage variables. The accumulated probability levels of 10%, 30%, 50%, and 70% are taken into account for the damage extent estimation. The ultimate strengths have been calculated using in-house software UMADS (Ultimate Moment Analysis of Damaged Ships) which is based on the progressive collapse method. Damage indices are provided for all heeling angles due to any possible flooding of compartments from $0^{\circ}$ to $180^{\circ}$ which represent from sagging to hogging conditions, respectively. The analysis results reveal that minimum damage indices show different values according to heeling angles and damage levels.

Through the full scale ship collision response analysis of high speed passenger ship with underwater floating matters, the objective of this study is to perform the crashworthy safety assessment of its hull and passengers. For this safety assessment, diverse collision scenarios could be established through the thorough understanding of damage mechanisms due to the collision of its hydrofoil system with underwater floating matter examining the damage informations of its hull and passengers from the collision accidents, and through the estimation of the damages of its hull and passenger. The next step, crashworthy safety assessment of its hull and passengers, was carried out by the collision response analyses of high speed passenger ship with underwater floating matter using Fluid-Structure Interaction(FSI) analysis technique of LS-DYNA code in consideration of surrounding water, and using local zooming analysis technique.
The increase in the elderly population also increased the damage and deaths of the elderly drivers. However, studies on the severity and severity of the elderly driver are not actively conducted and the factors are unknown. In this study, I tried to find out the factors affecting the damage and severity of the elderly driver in the frontal collision and to utilize them additionally in the severity classification. Collision Deformation Classification (CDC) Code was used to check the extent of damage to the vehicle. Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) was used to determine the injury parts and severity of injury, and the Injury Severity Score (ISS) to confirm the severity of the patient. The odds ratios of severe injury patients were found to be 7.381 in the subjects with 5 or more deformation extent and the ${\beta}$ value of the deformation extent was 0.453 in the analysis of the severity by linear regression analysis. Therefore, the degree of deformation extent of 5 or more can be suggested as a criterion that can be used additionally to the severity classification in the elderly driver.

Collision analysis problems between ship to ship can be generally classified into the external mechanics(outer dynamics) and internal mechanics(inner dynamics). The former can be also dealt with the concept of fluid-structure interaction and the use of rigid body dynamic program, depending on the ways handling the hydrodynamic pressure due to surrounding water. In this study, full scale ship collision simulation was carried out, such as a DWT 75,000 ton striking ship collided at right angle to the middle of a DWT 150,000 struck ship with 10 knots velocity, coupling MCOL, a rigid body mechanics program for modeling the dynamics of ships, to hydrocode LS-DYNA. It could be confirmed that more suitable damage estimation would be performed in the case of the collision simulations with consideration of surrounding water through the comparison with the collision simulation results of fixed struck ships without it. Through this study, the opportunity could be obtained to establish a more effective ship collision simulation technique between ship to ship.

The collision problem is one of the design factors that must be carefully considered for the risk of collision occurring during the operation of ships and offshore structures. This paper presents the main results of the ship collision study, and its main goal is to analyze potential crash scenarios that may occur in the FLNG (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas) considering the likelihood and outcome. Consideration being given to vessels visiting the FLNG and surrounding vessels navigating around, such as functionally supported vessels and offloading carriers. The scope includes vessels visiting the FLNG facility such as in-field support vessels and off-loading carriers, as well as third party passing vessels. In this study, based on QRA (quantitative risk assessment), basic research methods and information on collision are provided. Based on the assumptions and methodologies documented in this study, it has been possible to clarify the frequency of collision and the damage category according to the type of visiting ship. Based on these results, the risk assessment results related to the collision have been derived.
This paper intends to introduce the applicability of HydroQus to a problem of a tanker collision against a semi-submersible type floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT). HydroQus is a plug-in based on potential flow theory that generates interactive hydroforces in a commercial Finite element analysis (FEA) code Abaqus/Explicit. Frequency response analyses were conducted for a 10MW capacity FOWT to obtain hydrostatic and hydrodynamic constants. The tanker was modeled with rigid elements, while elastic-plastic elements were used for the FOWT. Mooring chains were modeled to implement station keeping ability of the FOWT. Two types of fracture models were considered: constant failure strain model and combined failure strain model HC-LN model composed of Hosford-Coulomb (HC) model & localized necking (LN) model. The damage extents were evaluated by hydroforces and failure strain models. The largest equivalent plastic strain observed in the cases where both restoring force and radiation force were considered. Stress triaxiality and damage indicator analysis showed that the application of HC-LN model was suitable. It could be stated that applications of suitable failure strain model and hydrodynamics into the collision simulations were of importance.
The safety of ships is one of the most important concerns in terms of the environment and human life. A ship in bad condition is likely to be subject to accidents, such as collision and grounding. When a ship has minor collision damages in the form of circle or ellipse, its ultimate strength will be reduced. It is important to evaluate the reduction ratio of a ship's ultimate strength that results from damages. The strength reduction of a plate with a cutout in the form of hole has been treated by many researchers. A closed-form formula for the reduction of ultimate strength of a plate, considering the effect of several forms of cutout, has been suggested. However, the structure of ships is composed of plates and stiffeners so-called stiffened plates and it is likely that plates and stiffeners will be damaged together in collisions. This paper investigates the effect of minor collision damages on the ultimate strength of a stiffened plate by using numerical analysis. For this study, the deformed shape of minor collision damages on a stiffened plate was made by using a contact algorithm and was used as the initial shape for ultimate stress analysis. Then, a series of nonlinear FE analyses was conducted to investigate the reduction effects on the ultimate strength of the stiffened plate. The boundary conditions were simply supported at all boundaries, and the tripping of stiffener was neglected. The results are presented in the form of reduction ratio between the ultimate strength of an original, intact stiffened plate and that of a damaged stiffened plate.
An intensive study was conducted for the crash worthy structural design of the recently developed Korean High Speed Train (KHST). Two main design concepts were set up to protect both crews and passengers from serious injury in heavy collision accidents, and to reduce damage to the train itself in light collision accidents. A collision against a movable 15-ton rigid obstacle at 110 kph was selected from train accident investigations as the accident scenario for the heavy collisions. A train-to-train collision at the relative velocity of 16 kph was used for the light collision. The crashworthiness behaviors of KHST were numerically evaluated using FEM. Analysis results using 1-D collision dynamics model of the full rake consist and 3-D shell element model of the front end structure showed good crashworthy responses in a viewpoint of structural design. Occupant analyses and sled tests demonstrated that KHST performed well enough to protect occupants under the considered accident scenarios. Finally our numerical approaches were evaluated by a real scale collision test.
