  • Background : One-quarter of Koreans are either students or school employeeS. Therefore, school health programs for them have high levels of cost-benefit. School health programs, though, are focused on services such as vaccination and physical examination according to administrational regulations without systemic planning. Futhermore, college health programs run autonomously, not under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. It is my intention to analyse the current status of college school health service centers and use the basic data so generated to model how they might operate at an optimal level of efficiency. Methods : I intended to investigate all 29 colleges in Seoul except some specialized colleges such as theological schools in the two-month period of August and September, 1999. I used the telephone interview method to ask questions relating to personal composition, medical equipment in use, annual expenditure and the provision of school health services. School health services were composed of three items; health servies, health education and a healthy school environment. Results : 27 college health service centers were surveyed. The median number of medical personal in each center was 2, the range was 1-31. 7 centers(25.9%) have only nurses with no doctors. Annual expenditures of 11 centers(50.1%) was less than 10 million won, 19 center(70.4%) were maintained by support from their college. Thirteen centers(48.1%) provided doctor's examinations, 6 centers(22.2%) provided dental care services, laboratory services were provided by seven centers(25.9%). Some 81.5% of the centers had vaccination programs and 44.5% had health education programs. There was no school environment program except insecticide provisions. College health service centers with school doctors differed from centers without school doctors in terms of medical equipment range, annual expenditures and annual case loads. Conclusion : The structure and function of college health service centers in Seoul are diverse. However, no center has a well-organized school health plan.

  • This descriptive correlation study attempted to analyze the relationship between school health practice competency and satisfaction of school health practice in nursing college students. The participants in this study included 191 nursing college students from three junior colleges. The data were collected using a self-reported questionnaires developed or revised by the authors from 22 June to 7 July, 2002. The data were analyzed with the SPSS program using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, pearson correlation coefficient. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The mean score of school health practice competency was 3.59. The mean score of health education, health management, nursing process, environmental management were 3.81, 3.73, 3.47 and 3.36 respectively. 2. The mean score of school health practice satisfaction was 3.34. The mean score of instruction, practice environment, contents, practice hours and evaluation were 3.66, 3.37, 3.26, 3.21 and 3.21 respectively. 3. Type of school was only significant factor in general characteristics related to satisfaction of school health practice. 4. Correlation between school health practice competency and satisfaction of school health practice showed that the positive correlation between satisfaction and competency (r=0.247, p=0.00l). nursing process(r=0.356, p=0.000), environmental management (r=0.153, p=0.035). In conclusion, this study found that satisfaction of school health practice was significantly related to school health practice competency in nursing college students. Therefore further study is needed to make a strategies to enhance the quality of school health practice competency in nursing college students.

  • Purpose: To analyze the current status of health education and problems of elementary, middle, and high schools by national health education guideline. Methods: Study subjects were 991 school health teachers of elementary, middle, and high schools in one province and the data was collected by mail. The data was analyzed by $x^2$-test and Fisher's exact test. Results: The rates of school health education implementation were 99.6% in elementary school, 98.1% in middle school, and 96% in high school. The rates of school health education were reported much higher than former studies. The most barrier in providing school health education was 'health room management during health education'. During health education by school health teachers, the health rooms were managed by other teachers in elementary schools or by locking the health room with announcement memo in middle and high schools. Conclusion: To improve the school health education, higher school health teacher placement and administrative supports for health clinic were recommended.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop strategies for creating health promoting school and to evaluate the implementation and its effect on the school. Methods: Based on WHO's Health Promoting School, we developed 5 strategies and implementing process for creating health promoting school and undertook The implementation process included workshops to raise awareness of the health promoting school, establishment of a school health team, review of the health needs of its community, development of an action plan, and practice of activities and reflect on program. Seventeen teachers (male 35.3%, female 64.7%) and 248 students (male 51.2%, female 47,6%) had completed pretest and posttest. Results: It was increasing in school's social environment, community relationship, personal skill and health service among components of HPS. However, there were no significant differences in self-reported health status and health behaviors among teachers. Although there were no significant changes in self-esteem, self-efficacy and BMI, there were significantly increasing in health knowledge, physical activities and fruit and vegetable intakes among students of a pilot school. Conclusion: Strategies for a creating health promoting school were appropriate to implement in school and they would also make a contribution to improve health knowledge and health behaviors in elementary school students.

  • In order to establish a more concrete dental health education and control program with the investigation of the knowledge levels concerning the dental health and the control of the dental health, twelve questionaires concerning the dental health were given to 263 inhabitants in the farm villages, 105 primary school teachers and 78 school health nurses. The results obtained from the information were as follows: 1. The knowledge levels of the primary school teachers and school health nurses as well as the inhabitants in the farm villages concerning the dental health were very low. 2. Most Korean population have not control ed their oral health in the right method using the toothbrushes and the dentifrices. 3. Most primary school teachers and school health nurses have not the ability to educate the primary school childen for the good dental health. 4. In Korea, the policies of the education and the control concerning the dental health must be reestablished. 5. Many Korean population complained the economic limitation and the over duties in their social life for the good dental health control. 6. It seems the complete medical and dental insurance system to be established for the good dental health control of most Korean population.

  • Background: Several previous studies have shown that commuting is a source of stress for undergraduate students. However, few studies have investigated the effect of commuting on academic stress among undergraduate students, and there has been little awareness of the environmental impact of commuting. Objectives: To evaluate the associations between commute type and/or time and academic stress among undergraduate students in South Korea, focusing on environmental sustainability. Methods: We conducted an online survey and obtained information on commute types, commute times, and academic stress from 510 undergraduate students aged ≥19 years. Academic stress was comprised of five sub-categories of stress, and total academic stress ranged from 5 to 25 points. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to analyze the associations between commute type and commute time and academic stress. Furthermore, the students were grouped into 21 categories based on their transportation mode for commuting. CO2 emission factors per each commuting category were calculated using the transportation type's CO2 emission data from previous studies. Spearman's correlation analysis was used to confirm the correlation between CO2 emission factors and total academic stress. Results: Students using home-to-school transportation without transfers (vs. walking) showed a significantly higher total academic stress of 2.19 points (95% CI: 0.58, 3.80). In contrast, students using school-to-home transportation without transfers (vs. walking) showed a significantly lower total academic stress of 1.96 points (95% CI: -3.55, -0.38). Moreover, students using transportation with lower CO2 emission factors had lower academic stress scores (home-to-school: correlation coefficient = 0.507, p<0.001; school-to-home: correlation coefficient = 0.491, p<0.001). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that both commute type and time are significantly associated with academic stress among South Korean undergraduate students. When students select environmentally-friendly transportation, they may not only improve their mental health but also improve climate resilience.
