Experience of Nurses Participating in Comprehensive Nursing Care (간호·간병통합서비스를 적용한 병동 간호사의 환자간호 경험)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the experience of nurse in comprehensive nursing care. Methods: Experiential data collected from 9 nurses through in-depth interviews. Participants were selected from nurses working in the comprehensive nursing care unit at general hospital. The main question was "Can you describe your experience in the comprehensive nursing care unit?" All interviews were recorded and transcribed, then analyzed using Colaizzi's method. Results: Nine themes were derived from the analysis: 'Practice nursing care', 'Feel thankful of the client', 'Difficulty in nursing due to absence of patients' guardian', 'Tired of over-demanding patient and distrust of guardian', 'Confusion regarding one's identity as a nurse', 'Not enough to support system', 'Insufficient pre-training for nurse and client', 'Requirement of work establishment for nurse and nurse aid', 'Concerns about low rewards and high safety accidents'. Conclusion: As a comprehensive nursing service, the nurses provided total patient care, and patient satisfaction and expression of appreciation increased. However, disadvantages were identified, such as patients' excessive needs, communication difficulties, lack of support systems, low compensation, and a high number of safety accidents. Therefore, systematic comprehensive nursing will be achieved if these shortcomings are addressed.

Applications of Experiential Learning Theory to Graduate Medical Education (졸업 후 의학교육에 경험학습이론의 활용)

  • The purpose of this study was to introduce the concepts of experiential learning and the Kolb's model, and to review some applications of experiential learning theory in graduate medical education. The published literature on GME and education for general practitioners applying the experiential theory and the Kolb's model was reviewed. Experience learning defined the cyclical learning process which emphasizes the learners' reflective thinking of the learners' concrete experiences and their active participation in continuous learning actives. Kolb includes this 'cycle of learning' as a central principle in his experiential learning theory. This is typically expressed as a four-stage cycle of learning. Kolb's cycle moves through concrete experience(CE), reflective observation(RO), abstract conceptualization(AC) and active experimentation(AE). Components of continuing education of the adult learner were based on autonomy, context of learning, and competence and performance as educational objectives. Some strategies for graduate medical education were reflective thinking, self-directed learning, morning reporting and feedback with peer review, etc. Opportunities for learning from experience in practical life can be made to enhance reflective thinking and performance of practitioners. Strategies to develop reflective practice among physicians should be explored by further research.

  • This study was carried out to present rural functional resources through classification and preparation of checklist for ecological and cultural resources which considered various aspect of agriculture and rural area. In this study the function of ecological and cultural resources classified 6 functions such as natural environment, free environmentally agricultural products, experience of agricultural products, recreational places, rural life experience, and Interchanges of human resources. Prepared evaluation list through this study can explain a local characteristics based on 6 functions of agricultural and mountain village. This evaluation list was focused on the magnitude of the resources which motivate the visiting of city-dweller as a consumer, for an actual regional plan, investigation of the inhabitant consciousness survey should be needed, simultaneously.

Survey of Awareness and Concept of Insects in Korea

  • To investigate the degree of individuals' concept and awareness of insects, a survey study was conducted with students and adults living in Korea. The misconception rate for insects was about 50% for both students and adults, but it was lower for students and people who had experienced insect-related events than for adults and those who had not. The highest misconception rate was obtained in answer to a question about the basic structure of an insect. Most people had a high awareness of insects. Significant differences and correlations for the awareness of insects were found between students and adults, men and women, people who had experienced insect-related events and those who had not. The experience of an insect-related event most influenced awareness of insects. These results suggest that increasing people's interest in insects and utilizing insects in treatment situations may be beneficial for the field of mental healthcare.

Nurses' Perception and Performance of End-of-Life Care in a Tertiary Hospital

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify levels of perception and performance of end-oflife care among nurses and to investigate correlations between perception and performance. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive survey included 321 nurses from a tertiary hospital in Seoul, Korea. The participants had at least 6 months of work experience and had been involved in end-of-life care at least once, in either ward or intensive care unit settings. A structured questionnaire was utilized to assess their perception and performance of endof-life care. Results: The mean score for perception of end-of-life care was 3.23±0.34, while the score for performance of end-of-life care was 3.08±0.34. There was a significant positive correlation between nurses' perception of end-of-life care and their performance in this area (r=0.78, P<0.001). Conclusion: It is necessary to change perceptions regarding end-of-life care and to develop systematic and standardized education programs including content such as assessing the hydration status of dying patients, evaluating mental aspects such as suicidal ideation, and providing spiritual care for nurses working in end-of-life departments.

Attitudes of Medical Students' towards End-of-life Care Decision-making (일개 의과대학생의 말기 환자 치료 결정에 대한 태도)

  • Purpose: Sooner of later, end-of-life care decision-making will unfold and be settled during the professional lives of medical students. However, there is prevalent ambiguity and uncertainty between the palliative treatment and euthanasia. We conducted this survey to investigate attitudes of medical students towards end-of-life making decisions, and to find out which factors primarily influenced the attitudes. Methods: A study was conducted among medical students at one university, the Republic of Korea. A written questionnaire was sent to all the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-year medical students. It presented 5 statements on end-of-life decision-making. Students were asked whether they agreed or disagreed with each statement. Results: The response rate was 74.4%, and 267 questionnaires were analyzed. Percentages of agreement with each statements on Voluntary active euthanasia (VAE), Physician assisted suicide (PAS), Withholding life-sustaining management, Withdrawing life-sustaining management, and Terminal sedation (TS) was 37.1%, 21.7%, 58.4%, 60.3%, and 41.6%, respectively. The grade of students, religious activity, and educational experience were determinant factors. Agreement on each statements was higher in the low religious activity group than in the high religious activity group. Agreement on TS was higher among 3rd year students during their clerkship than among 1st and 2nd year students. Age of students and the experience of dying-people care had no significant influence. Conclusion: In end-of-life decision-making, religious and educational factors influenced medical students' attitudes. Especially, the experience of education during clerkship had significant influence on the attitude. Proper teaching on end-of-life decisions should further be considered during medical students' clerkship.

Work-Family Compatibility Experience of Married Nurse: Focusing on the Expanding Stage of the Family Life Cycle (기혼간호사의 일-가정양립경험: 가족확대기 간호사를 중심으로)

  • This study examined the work-family compatibility experience of married nurses. The participants of this research were 7 registered nurses who are on the expanding stage of their family life cycle. Data were collected by individual in-depth interviews from June 10 to November 30, 2015 and analyzed using phenomenological methodology by Colaizzi (1978). The results showed that the work-family compatibility experience of married nurses may be categorized into 4 categories, 'the reality of work and parenting', 'external and internal conflicts about the compatibility of work and parenting', 'compromise with reality for solving the difficulty of compatibility', 'growing desire and efforts for compatibility', and may be identified with 12 theme clusters and 29 themes. The worthiness as a professional woman and happiness in child rearing are the driving force of the compatibility of work and family in married nurses. Therefore, the continued support of government policies and family is important for married nurses to maintain work and family balance.

Turnover Experience of Male Nurses (남자 간호사의 이직 경험)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify turnover experiences of men in nursing and to derive a substantive theory on the turnover experience of men who are nurses. Methods: Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 13 men who had worked as a nurse for 1 year or more, and had a turnover experience during that period. Collected data were analyzed on the basis of Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory. Results: The core category in the turnover experiences of the respondents was 'seeking a stable place for me'. In the analysis of the core category, types of 'contentment', 'seeking', 'survival' and 'confusion' were identified. The sequential stages of these nurses' turnover experience were 'confrontation', 'incertitude', 'retrying' and 'realization'. However, when a problem arose in the process, they returned to the stage of confusion. Thus, these stages could occur in a circular fashion. Conclusion: These findings provide a deep understanding of the turnover experience of men in nursing and offers new information about how they adapt to nursing practice. The findings should be useful as foundational data for men who hope to become nurses and also for managers responsible for nurses who are men.

Types of Stress for the Improvement of Quality of Life for Nursing Students (간호대학생의 삶의 질 향상을 위한 스트레스 유형 연구)

  • Purpose: The study aimed to explore the stress experience of nursing college students. Methods: A Q-methodology to analyze the subjectivity of each item was used. 57 statements were derived from a literature review and interviews. 40 nursing college students were classified into a shape of normal distribution using a 13-point scale. Collected data were analyzed by the PC QUANL program. Results: Four types have been identified for the stress experience of nursing college students. Type I was "curriculum burden", Type II was "goal-oriented", Type III was "outsider frustration" and Type IV was "growth stagnation" Conclusion: These results can be useful for developing education programs based on the type of stress in nursing college students.

College Students′ Perception of Emotional Tie with their Parents and Attitudes toward Parent Caregiving (대학생 자녀가 지각한 부모와의 정서적 관계와 부모 부양 의식)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the variables which account for college students' attitudes toward parent caregiving. The subjects or this research were 204 students(male:98, female:106) who were currently enrolled at three coeducational universities and one women's university located in the metropolitan area. The instruments used for this study were Attachment and Conflict Scale by Song(1986) and Im(1988), and Parent Caregiving Attitudes Scale by Shin(1993). The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson's correlations and stepwise multiple regression. The major results of this study were as follows: First, it turned out that a significant gender difference in attitudes toward parent caregiving exists. Female college students had more positive attitudes toward parent caregiving than male college students. Second, the variables explaining college students'attitudes toward parent caregiving were the extent of attachment with their parents and the experience of cohabitation with their grandparents. The stronger male and female students had attachment with their parents, the more positive attitudes toward parent caregiving they had. In addition, male college students without an experience of cohabitation with their grandparents reported more positive attitudes toward parent caregiving.
