  • In order to identify the characteristics of the flame transfer function gain, cold-flow transfer function was introduced, which is the part of the combustion instability research. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide was used to obtain the cold-flow transfer function and input/output variables was measured by hot wire anemometry. Density and fluid flow rate affect the cold-flow transfer function gain and peak frequency. In addition, acoustic resonance frequency affects the peak frequency of gain in the fuel feeding line.

  • The performance experiments for a microchannel printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) of high-performance and high-efficiency on the two technologies of micro photo-etching and diffusion bonding were performed in this study. The microchannel PCHE were experimentally investigated for Reynolds number in ranges of 100 $\sim$ 700 under various flow conditions in the hot side and the cold side. The inlet temperatures of the hot side were conducted in range of $40^{\circ}C\;{\sim}\;50^{\circ}C$ while that of the cold-side were fixed at $20^{\circ}C$. In the flow pattern, the counter flow was provided 6.8% and 10 $\sim$ 15% higher average heat transfer rate and heat transfer performance than the parallel flow, respectively. The average heat transfer rate, heat transfer performance and pressure drop increases with increasing Reynolds number in all the experiment. The increasing of inlet temperature in the experiment range has not an effect on the heat transfer performance while the pressure drop decrease slightly with that of inlet temperature. The experimental correlations to the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop factor as a function of the Reynolds number have been suggested for the microchannel PCHE.

  • A numerical analysis is performed about the effects of aspect ratio on natural convective heat transfer from a vertical isothermal cylinder of 0.deg. C immersed in cold pure water. The results of analysis include velocity profiles, temperature profiles and mean Nusselt number of the steady flow region. As aspect ratio of vertical cylinder increases, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of vertical isothermal cylinder approach to those of vertical isothermal flat plate. Numerical solutions obtained for Rayleigh number and aspect ratio indicate the cylinders can be classified as short cylinder and long cylinder. In the cases of short cylinder and long cylinder, new heat transfer correlations are presented. Here, the coefficient values C of new heat transfer correlations are presented as the function of density extremum parameter $R^*/. Numerical results show that theoretical results are in close agreement with experimental results.ts.

  • This research investigates the internal flow and heat transfer in a plate heat exchanger with chevron shape by utilizing the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The basic unit of the plate heat exchanger is generally composed of a hot channel, an intermediate chevron plate, and a cold channel. Several studies have reported experimental and numerical simulation of heat transfer and pressure drop. This study focused on the detailed numerical simulation of flow and heat transfer in the complicated chevron shape channel. The long chevron plate was designed to include 16 chevron patterns. For proper mesh resolution, the number of cells was determined after the grid sensitivity test. The working fluid is water, and its properties are defined as a function of temperature. The Reynolds number ranges from 900 to 9,000 in the simulation. A realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and non-equilibrium wall function are properly considered for the turbulent flow. The friction factors and heat transfer coefficient are validated by comparing them with existing empirical correlations, and other patterned flow phenomena are also investigated.

  • Study on combined natural convection-radiation In partially open square enclosures filled with absorbing-anisotropic scattering media is performed. A heater block located in the enclosure causes the natural circulation of the fluid in the enclosure which results In significant in-flow of the cold fluid through the partially open wall. Four different locations of the heater are considered to observe the effect of the heater locations on the resulting heat transfer. Results obtained from the combined convection-radiation analyses show much stronger circulation of t he fluid inside the enclosure as compared to those obtained from the pure convection analyses. As the ratio of the open area is Increased, the inflow of the cold fluid and the circulation of the fluid inside the enclosure is increased causing lower fluid temperature Inside the enclosure. It is shown that the location of the heater influences the circulation and heat transfer significantly by showing stronger circulations and more uniform temperature distributions for the cases where the heater is located on the bottom wall as compared to those for the cases where the heater is located on the upper part wall of the enclosure. For pure absorbing medium, the expected circulation in the fluid is relatively week as compared to those with absorbing-scattering medium due to the smaller wall heating as the radiant heat is used to heat the fluid instead. The forward anisotropic scattering phase function is shown to increase the fluid circulation further as compared to the isotropic scattering medium.

  • The cold shock of spermatozoa is associated with oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species. This study was conducted to evaluate the toxicity of natural antioxidant green tea extract (GTE) in lactose-egg yolk (LEY) extender during boar sperm cooling prior to freezing. Spermatozoa were cooled to $5^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in LEY extender containing 0 (control), 1, 10, 100 or 1,000 mg/l of GTE, re-suspended with LEY-glycerol-Equex extender and cooled at $5^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. Sperm progressive motility, viability and phosphatidylserine (PS) translocation were evaluated. PS translocation was assayed by flow cytometry using Annexin V-FITC apoptosis detection kit. The sperm function including progressive motility, viability and PS translocation was not significantly different regardless of GTE concentrations (P>0.05). In conclusion, this study demonstrated non-toxicity of GTE supplement in LEY extender during sperm cooling.

  • A numerical analysis is carried out to study the two-dimensional steady state natural convection from vertical wires immersed in cold pure water. The surface of the wire is $0^{\circ}C$ unifrom temperature. Results of the analysis are presented for free stream temperature from $0^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ and the aspect ratio N from $5.26{\times}10^{-3}$ to $1.0{\times}10^{-3}$. The effects of the density extremum and aspect ratio on the flow pattern and the heat transfer characteristics are discussed As the aspect ratio N becomes larger, in the range of $1.0^{\circ}C{\leq}T_{\infty}{\leq}4.4^{\circ}C$ and $6{^{\circ}C}{\leq}T_{\infty}{\leq}17^{\circ}C$, the effect of Pr number on the heat transfer is shown to be more significant than the aspect ratio. Investigating into the effect of the density extremum on the heat transfer from wires, the new heat transfer correlations are suggested with the relation of average Nu mumber vs. modified Ra number. Here, the coefficient values C of correlations are presented as the function of density extremum parameter $R^*$. The effects of the density extremum parameter are also discussed.

  • A numerical simulation on the combined natural convection and radiation is carried out in a partially open rectangular enclosure with a heater by using the finite volume and the S-8 discrete ordinate methods. The fluid inside the enclosure is considered as an absorbing, emitting and anisotropic scattering media. The heater causes a natural circulation of the fluid (10$^{5}$ $^{9}$ ) which results in significant in-flow of the ambient cold fluid through the partially open wall. Comparing the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection- radiation, the combined heat transfer results with small Planck numbers (P$_{l}$ <1.0) show much stronger circulation than those of the pure convection, and the fluid circulation is more evident for larger Rayleigh numbers. When one of three radiative properties - the medium absorption coefficient, the wall reflectivity, and the scattering albedo - increases, the fluid circulation and the heat transfer in the enclosure are reduced. The location of the heater and the open ratio of the right wall are also shown to affect the fluid circulation and heat transfer significantly. However, the anisotropy of the scattering phase function is shown to be unimportant for the fluid circulation and heat transfer within the enclosure considered in this study.

  • Natural convection in a square enclosure was investigated numerically for low prandtl number fluids using Finite Element Method. In case of Ra=10$^{4}$, 10$^{5}$ and 10$^{6}$ the temperature gradient decreases gradually at the lower end of the hot wall(or at the upper end of the cold wall) as prandtl number decreases in the range of 0.01 .leq. Pr .leq. 10. Maximum heat transfer occurs at a somewhat higher point from the lower end of hot wall(or at somewhat lower point from the upper end of the cold wall) and it draws near to the lower end of the hot wall(or draws near to the upper end of the cold wall) with increasing prandtl number. The flow in the enclosure appears as an Unicell Pattern for Ra .leq. 10$^{4}$ and secondarily flows(or tertiary flows) appears in the core region for Ra .geq. 10$^{5}$ . The line joining the center of secondary cells skewes in a clockwise direction as the Prandtl number decreases.

  • The FHX (Forced-draft sodium-to-air Heat Exchanger) employed in the ADHRS (active decay heat removal system) is a shell-and-tube type counter-current flow heat exchanger with M-shape finned-tube arrangement. Liquid sodium flows inside the heat transfer tubes and atmospheric air flows over the finned tubes. The unit is placed in the upper region of the reactor building and has function of dumping the system heat load into the final heat sink, i.e., the atmosphere. Heat is transmitted from the primary cold sodium pool into the ADHRS sodium loop via DHX (decay heat exchanger), and a direct heat exchange occurs between the tube-side sodium and the shell-side air through the FHX tube wall. This paper describes the DHRS and the structural design of the FHX.
