The major studies of an ocean circulation of the East/Japan Sea related to evaluate the feasibility and utilization of deep ocean water are reviewed. The major feature of surface current system of the East/Japan Sea is an inflow of the Tsushima Warm Current through the Korea/Tsushima Strait and the outflow through the Tsugaru and Soya Straits. The Tsushima Warm Current has been known to split into two or three branches in the southern region of the East/Japan Sea. In the cold water region of the East/Japan Sea, the North Korean Cold Current turns to the east near 39$^{\circ}$N after meeting the East Korean Warm Current, then flows eastward. The degree of penetration depends on the strength of the positive wind stress curl, according to the ventilation theory. Various current meter moorings indicate strong and oscillatory deep currents in various parts of the basin. According to some numerical experiments, these currents may be induced by pressure-topography or eddy-topography interaction. However, more investigations are needed to explain clearly the presence of these strong bottom currents. This study concludes the importance of topographical coupling, isopycnal outcropping, different wind forcing and the branching of the Tsushima Warm Current on the circulation of the East/Japan Sea.

For the design guide of a vessel operating in cold region, numerical analysis was carried out to evaluate the weather-tight door which installed the heating cables by using ANSYS 13.0 Transient Thermal. The numerical analysis was performed by considering Advection-Diffusion equation. This study based on the experimental results of 'A study on Anti-Icing Technique for Weather-Tight Door of Ice-Strengthened Vessels'(Jeong, et al., 2011a) in KIOST. For validation of the numerical analysis results, the cold chamber experimental data measured by the heat sensors in certain location of the weather-tight door was used. The external environmental temperature which varies from $5^{\circ}C$ to $-55^{\circ}C$ was considered in numerical analysis. Also three different heating cables which have the heat capacity of 33W/m, 45W/m and 66W/m were adapted for the design parameters to be the most efficient and guidelines for anti-icing design of the weather tight door.

For the design guide of a vessel operating in cold region, numerical analysis was carried out to evaluate the ice class louver which installed the heating cables by using ANSYS 13.0 CFX. The numerical analysis was performed by considering Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equation. This study based on the experimental results of ‘The Cryogenic Performance Evaluation for the Excellent De-icing Ice Class Louver’ in KRISO. For validation of the numerical analysis results, the cold chamber experimental data measured by the heat sensors in certain location of the ice class louver was used. The external environmental temperature which varies from 0℃ to –30℃ was considered in numerical analysis. Also the design guide for optimum de-icing presented through heating cable power capacity(33 W/m, 45 W/m, 66 W/m), location of the heating cable(front, center, behind on the blade) and relative velocity(1 m/s, 4 m/s, 7 m/s).

During cold operation, fuel injection in the intake port directly contributes to the unburned hydrocarbon formation in spark ignition engines. The relationship between injection parameters and HC emission behavior was investigated through a series of experiments. Spray behavior of port fuel injectors was characterized through a quantitative evaluation of mass concentration of liquid fuel by a patternator and PDA(Phase-Doppler. Anemometer). A 6-hole injector was found to produce finer spray than single hole injector. Using a purpose-built wall, the wetted fuel was measured, which was mostly affected by wall temperature. HC emissions were measured in a production engine varying coolant temperature$(20~80^{\circ}C)$, also with respect to the different types of injectors. In the 6-hole injector application, the engine produced less HC emission in low coolant temperature region. Though it produces much more amount of wetting fuel, it has the advantages of finer atomization quality. In high coolant temperature region, there was little effect by different types of injectors. The control schemes to reduce HC emissions during cold start could be suggested from the findings that the amount of fuel supply and HC emission could be reduced by utilizing fine spray and high intake wall temperature.
A cold roll-bonding process using AA1050, AA5052 and AA6061 alloy sheets is performed without lubrication. The roll-bonded specimen is a multi-layer complex aluminum alloy sheet in which the AA1050, AA5052 and AA6061 sheets are alternately stacked. The microstructural evolution with the increase of annealing temperature for the roll-bonded aluminum sheet is investigated in detail. The roll-bonded aluminum sheet shows a typical deformation structure in which the grains are elongated in the rolling direction over all regions. However, microstructural evolution of the annealed specimen is different depending on the type of material, resulting in a heterogeneous microstructure in the thickness direction of the layered aluminum sheet. Complete recrystallization occurs at 250 ℃ in the AA5052 region, which is lower by 100K than that of the AA1050 region. Variation of the misorientation angle distribution and texture development with increase of annealing temperature also differ depending on the type of material. Differences of microstructural evolution between aluminum alloys with increase of annealing temperature can be mainly explained in terms of amounts of impurities and initial grain size.
The purpose of this study is to investigate microbial contamination in water purifiers from two universities (A and B) in Chungcheong region and to evaluate about the harmfulness of the isolated bacteria to the human. The degree of microbiological contamination of six water purifiers at university A was investigated three times from July 2018 to September 2019, and nine water purifiers at university B were investigated in 2023. The isolated bacteria were biochemically identified using an API kit and Vitek-2 system, and then the bacteria were identified to the species level using MALDI-TOF MS. In addition, the possibility of human infection of the isolated bacteria was evaluated through a literature search. In July 2018 and September 2019, the number of bacteria isolated inside the faucet was below the acceptable standard for hot water, but exceed for cold water in all water purifiers. In January and September 2019, bacteria exceeding the acceptable standards were isolated nine times from the cold water of six water purifies (a total of 12 water purifiers). Bacteria identified by MALDI-TOF MS included anaerobic bacteria (Clostridium novyi, Clostridium themopalmarium etc.), Gram-positive bacilli (Microbacterium testaceum, Arthrobacter woluwensis etc.), and Gramnegative bacilli (Acinetobacter nosocomialis, Comamonas kerstersii etc.), which are difficult identify by biochemical methods. In conclusion, bacteria exceeding the acceptable standard were isolated from the cold water of most of the water purifiers. Most of the isolated bacteria were low-pathogenic bacteria from natural environment, but opportunistic bacteria that can cause infection in humans were also isolated from some water purifiers.
The effect of annealing temperature on the martensitic transformation behavior, tensile deformation chracteristics and shape recovery etc., has been studied in TiNi based shape memory ribbon fabricated by coldrolling of wire. TiNi based shape memory wire (${\phi}=500{\mu}m$) of which structure is intermetallic compound could be cold-rolled without process annealing up to the reduction rate in thickness of 50%, but a few cracks appear in cold-rolled ribbon in the reduction rate in thickness of 65%. The $B2{\rightarrow}R{\rightarrow}B19^{\prime}$ martensitic transformation or $B2{\rightarrow}B19^{\prime}$ martensitic transformation occurs in annealing conditions dissipating lattice defects introduced by coldrolling. However, in case of higher reduction rate or lower annealing temperature, martensitic transformation in cold-rolled and then annealed ribbons does not occur. The maximum shape recovery rate of cold-rolled ribbons with the reduction rate of 35 and 65% could be achieved at annealing temperatures of 250 and $350^{\circ}C$, respectively. The shape recovery rate seems to be related to the stress level of plateau region on stress-strain curve.
Year-to-year variation of bottom cold waters around the Korea Strait was investigated based on bottom temperatures measured by submarine telephone cable between Pusan, Korea and Hamada, Japan from 1982 to 1992. The characteristics of bottom temperatures could be divided into three different groups: the Korean side, the middle, and the Japanese side. Temperature drops in summer appeared in all the three regions implying the intrusion of cold waters into the Korea Strait. Significant decreases in the Korean side were observed in 1983, 1986, 1990, 1991, and 1992 when bottom temperatures were high in the middle. In contrast, bottom temperatures significantly decreased in the middle in 1985, 1988, and 1989 when the temperature drops in the Korean side were relatively small. This tendency for a negative relationship was also shown in the second mode of an EOF analysis. In the years when bottom temperatures significantly decrease din the Korean side, the cold water along the east coast of Korea expanded offshore and its temperature was low. On the contrary, cold water in the southern region of the Ulleung Basin developed in the years when bottom temperatures decreased considerably in the middle.

This study presents cyclic stress-strain and tensile test results at room temperature (RT) and 316℃ using cold-worked TP304 stainless steel base and weld metals. By comparing the cyclic hardening/softening behavior and failure cycle of cold-worked materials with those of irradiated austenitic stainless steels, the feasibility of simulating the irradiation effect on cyclic deformation and failure behaviors of TP304 stainless steel base and weld metals was investigated. It was found that, in the absence of strain-induced martensite trasformation, cold-working could properly simulate the change in cyclic hardening/softening behavior of TP304 stainless steel base and weld metals due to neutron irradiation. It was also recognized that cold-working could adequately simulate the reduction in failure cycles of TP304 stainless steel base and weld metals due to neutron irradition in the low-cycle fatigue region.

Low temperature associated damage mechanism is not well known for asphalt concrete. Many studies have related the thermal cracking of pavement in the roadway in cold region with overall shrinkage of the pavement surface under assumption of homogeneous material. This study, however, was intiated based on the assumption that thermal incompatibility of materials (heterogeneous) in asphalt concrete mixture would be the primary cause of the damages. Acoustic emission technique and microscopic obsevation were employed to evaluate damage mechanism of asphalt concrete due to low temperature. The first method showed the sufficient evidence that asphalt concrete could be damaged by lowered temperature only. The second method showed that the damage by temperature resulted in micro-cracks at the interface between asphalt matrix and aggregate particle. It was concluded that these damage mechanisms were the primary cause of major thermal cracking of asphalt pavement in cold region.
