Background: Cold hypersensitivity (CH) and sleep disorders are not limited to patients with specific diseases, as they are also commonly observed in the general population. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between CH and sleep quality. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from a cohort of 5,052 individuals living in South Korea. Based on the results of a questionnaire on CH, the participants were classified into four groups: non-CH, CH in the hands (CHH), CH in the feet (CHF), and CH in the hands and feet (CHHF). Sleep quality was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Multiple regression was used for groupwise comparisons of total PSQI scores and the scores for each component, and logistic regression was used to find the odds ratios of being a "poor sleeper" (PSQI≥8.5). Results: The CHF and CHHF groups showed significantly higher scores than the non-CH group on the overall PSQI as well as on the following sleep components: subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, habitual sleep efficiency, sleep disturbance, and sleep medication use. The odds ratios for being a "poor sleeper" were significant in the CHF (1.84; CI=1.38-2.43) and CHHF groups (1.54; CI=1.25-1.89), but the CHH group did not show any difference from the non-CH group. We identified a correlation between CH in the feet and poor sleep quality. Conclusions: These findings help to elucidate the relationship between sleep and CH and highlight the need to clarify the underlying mechanism.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between cold hypersensitivity and common health indexes including dyspepsia, headache, defecation, leucorrhea, and menstruation in young women. Methods: 40 outpatients who visited Kangnam Kyung-Hee Oriental Hospital from January, 2010 to November, 2011 were analyzed. The experimental group consisted of 20 patients diagnosed with cold hypersensitivity, while the control group consisted of 20 patients who were not. All patients were subjected to Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging(DITI), and those with thermal difference greater than $2^{\circ}C$ between anterior thigh and top of feet were diagnosed with cold hypersensitivity. The subjective characteristics of dyspepsia, headache, defecation, leucorrhea, and menstruation were obtained through inquiry by residents at the hospital. The relationship between cold hypersensitivity, dyspepsia, headache, defecation, leucorrhea, and menstruation was analyzed with Independent T-test using SPSS for Windows (version 17.0). Results: Means of defecation, leucorrhea, dysmenorrhea in cold hypersensitivity group were higher than control group without significant statistical difference. Dyspepsia appeared statistically higher in experimental group with significance while headache was the same in both groups. Means of menstrual cycle and menstrual coagulation were higher in non-cold hypersensitivity group, but there was no statistical difference. Conclusions: Results suggest that dyspepsia is common in cold hypersensitivity and treatment of cold hypersensitivity may relieve accompanying digestive problems.
Objectives: Cold Hypersensitivity of Hands and Feet (CHHF) has been diagnosed objectively by Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI) and has been known to be associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS), which can be assessed by Heart Rate Variability (HRV). This study evaluated the correlation between severity of CHHF and HRV variables. Methods: We studied 155 non-menopausal women with CHHF who visited Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong from 01 October 2013 to 30 April 2016. We measured DITI and HRV of each patient. We used DITI to calculate the severity of CHHF with thermal difference between upper arm (L4, 俠白穴) and palm (P8, 勞宮穴) of both hands and anterior thigh (ST32, 伏兎穴) and dorsum of foot (LI3, 太衝穴) of both feet. The correlation between severity of CHHF and HRV variables were analyzed. Results: In time domain analysis, there was significantly positive correlation between the severity of CHHF and both SDNN and RMSSD. In frequency domain analysis, there was significantly positive correlation between the severity of CHHF and TP, HF and HF Norm while there was significantly negative correlation between the severity of CHHF and LF Norm as well as between the severity of cold hypersensitivity of both hands and LF/HF ratio. Conclusions: The more severe CHHF is, the more increased the function of parasympathetic nerve system (PNS) and relatively decreased the function of sympathetic nerve system (SNS) is. Also, it has known that cold hypersensitivity could be caused by deficiency syndrome and qi deficiency has the same ANS tendency as CHHF. Therefore, in practical fields, this result can be helpful in planning treatment and deciding prognosis in respect of deficiency syndrome.
Objectives The purpose of this study was to figure out the effect and safety of electro-acupuncture and acupuncture on cold hypersensitivity on hands and feet(CHHF) by Sasang constitution. Methods 72 subjects were recruited from three Korean medical hospitals from October 2019 to October 2020. Subjects were randomly allocated in 1:1:1 ratio to electro-acupuncture group(EA group), acupuncture group(AC group), and control group. The EA and AC group received treatment twice a week for 5 weeks. We tried to confirm the effectiveness of electro-acupuncture and acupuncture treatment by checking changes in Visual analogue score(VAS), body temperature of LU4, PC8, ST32, LR3, and WHOQOL-BREF score. Results The VAS score of CHHF was reduced after treatment, and the effect continued for 4 weeks after the end of treatment in all Sasang constitution, all treatment groups. In all Sasang constitution, the body temperature of the electro-acupuncture group or acupuncture grouop was higher than that of the control group except LU4 in visit 11. And no clinically significant adverse events have been identified. Conclusions Electro-acupuncture and acupuncture treatment are effective on hypersensitivity on hands on feet, and the effect was shown regardless of Sasang constitution.
Objectives This study aimed to examine the differences in the distribution of metabolic syndrome(MetS) and cold hypersensitivity in the hands and feet(CHHF) according to Sasang constitution, and to determine whether CHHF and MetS have an inverse association. Methods MetS and its components, CHHF, Sasang constitution data from 1,998 participants in the Korean medicine Daejeon Citizen Cohort study(KDCC) were obtained. The participants were divided into a non-CHHF(n = 1,270, 63.6%), intermediate(n = 220, 11.0%) and CHHF(n = 508, 25.4%) group according to the thermal sensitivity questionnaire. Sasang constitution was diagnosed by Korea Sasang Constitutional Diagnostic Questionnaire(KS-15). One-way ANOVA and the chi-square test were used for participants' general characteristics and thermal sensitivity and MetS related factors. ANCOVA and logistic regression were used to compare the differences and the odds ratios(ORs) for MetS and its components. Results The MetS and CHHF prevalence rates of the Taeeumin, Soeumin, and Soyangin were 27.6%, 3.8%, 7.7%, and 18.3%, 42.3%, 26.4% respectively. The ANCOVA for MetS components showed that the waist circumference was significantly lower in the CHHF group as compared to the non-CHHF group in total and Soyangin. The logistic regression for MetS prevalence showed that CHHF had a significant inverse association in total(OR = 0.611) and Taeeumin(OR = 0.521). Conclusions The MetS prevalence had the highest in Taeeumin, followed by Soyangin and Soeumin, while the prevalence of CHHF was highest in Soeumin, followed by Soyangin and Taeeumin. In addition, it was confirmed that CHHF and MetS had an inverse association independently.
Objectives The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between cold hypersensitivity and bone mineral density. Methods 28 outpatients who visited OO University Oriental Hospital from July 11th, 2013 to August 28th, 2013 were analyzed. Patients were subjected to thermometer, and those with thermal difference greater than 0.3 ℃ between upper arm and palm and also with more than VAS 4 of cold hypersensitivity were diagnosed with cold sensitivity. Lumba spine (L2-4) and heel bone measurement were obtained on dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and Quantitative Computed Tomography (QCT). Results 1. There was statistically significant correlation between T-score of DEXA and body weight (0.522), BMI (0.643), OSTA (Osteoporosis elf-assesment Tool for Asians, 0.579), BMI, T-score and Z-score of QCT. OSTA and T-score of QCT (0.521) also had statistically significance. 2. There was no statistically significant correlation between body fat, abdominal obesity rate, degree of cold hypersensitivity, upper arm and palm's temperature difference, palm temperature, height and Z-score, T-score of QCT or T-sore of DEXA. Conclusions Bone mineral density was lower in women who had cold hypersensitivity of hand and feet. But there was no statistically significant correlation between bone mineral density and degree of cold hypersensitivity, upper arm and palm’s temperature difference.
Objectives: The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between Sasang constitution and cold hypersensitivity. Methods: We investigated 391 outpatients who visited Dong-Eui Oriental Hospital OB & GY from June 12, 2013 to April 18, 2014. Among 134 patients who complained feeling of cold, we analyzed 107 patients whose Sasang constitution is confirmed. Results: 1. There were 21 persons 19.8% of under age 27, 28 persons 26.4% of age 28-34, 23 persons 21.7% of age 35-41, 18 persons 17% of age 42-48, 16 persons 15.1% of age over 49. 2. Among 107 patients, there were 52 persons 48.6% of Soeumin, 29 persons 27.1% of Taeeumin, 25 persons 23.4% of Soyangin, 1 person 0.9% of Taeyangin. And Taeyangin interior disease was 1 case 100%, Soyangin exterior disease was 22 cases 88% and interior disease was 3 cases 12%, Taeeumin exterior disease was 11 cases 37.9% and interior disease was 18 cases 62.1%, Soeumin exterior disease was 19 cases 36.5% and interior disease was 33 cases 3.5%. 3. In the distribution of cold-hypersensitive part, hands and feet with chills were 58 cases 4.7% by largest number, and the following was hands and feet in 24 cases 22.6%. 4. In the distribution of chief complaint, there were 25 cases 23.58% of menstrual pain, 19 cases 17.92% of postpartum symptoms, 17 cases 16.04% of oligomenorrhea and hypomenorrhea, 14 cases 13.21% of cold hypersensitivity. 5. In the distribution of chief complaint depending on age, menstrual pain of under age 27, postpartum symptoms of age 35-41 and cold hypersensitivity of over age 49 were at a high rate. Conclusions: Results suggest that patients with symptom of cold hypersensitivity have some tendencies in age, Sasang constitution, chief complaint, cold-hypertensive part.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment at SP6(Sanyinjiao) on the temperature change of feet in healthy adults and evaluate whether SP6 has an effect on cold hypersensitivity of feet. Methods : Subjects of this study were 61 healthy adults consisting of 21 in the acupuncture treatment group, 21 in the moxibustion treatment group and 19 in the control group, selected at random. After starting the experiment, the subjects laid straight on their back and relaxed for 30 minutes. Pictures were then taken of their feet by DITI 3 times before and after treatment. The treatment was carried out by either 15 minutes of acupuncture or 2 pieces of moxibustion at SP6. Whilst the control group rested lying straight. After taking pictures the temperatures of LR2, GB42, ST42, KI1, center of the plantar, and center of the calcaneus were checked and the SPSS for Windows Version 20.0 was used to evaluate the statistical significance by the paired t-test, Wilcoxon signed-ranks test(in group) and the Mann-Whitney U-test(between the groups). Results : Some temperature changes before and after treatment were observed in each of the 12 areas, most of which were not significant. But as a result of comparing the temperature difference of all the samples without dividing the area of each group, the mean temperatures in the acupuncture and moxibustion group were significantly elevated. A comparison between the groups showed the mean temperature of the acupuncture and moxibustion group to be significantly elevated, more so than the control group. Conclusion : The result of this study suggests acupuncture and moxibustion treatment at SP6 has the effect of the rising temperature of feet temporarily.

Objectives : This study aimed to investigate the relationship between cold feet and sleep quality using polysomnography (PSG) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Methods : We divided 11 adults (6 females, 5 males) with Insomnia Severity Index score below 21 into cold feet (CF) and a non-cold feet (NCF) group based on the median feet temperature (Taichong, LR3). PSG and PSQI were administered to assess sleep characteristics and subjective sleep quality. Results : CF group exhibited significantly lower time in bed, sleep period time, and total sleep time compared to NCF group. While there were no significant group differences in sleep latency, wakefulness after sleep onset, or total arousal index, NCF group had significantly lower minimum oxygen saturation and apnea-hypopnea index in REM (rapid eye movement) sleep compared to CF group. Although the PSQI score and the proportion of poor sleepers were both higher in the CF group (7.40 and 80%) compared to the NCF group (5.50 and 50%), these differences did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions : This study showed that foot temperature affects sleep characteristics and suggests the need to utilize PSG in sleep research in Korean medicine.
Objectives : This study's aim is to investigate clinical studies of cold hypersensitivity of hands and feet (CHHF) published in Korea and to explore the direct of future research. Methods : We searched clinical studies of CHHF using the database, such as DBpia(http://www.dbpia.co.kr/), NDSL(www.ndsl.kr), OASIS(http://oasis.kiom.re.kr), and RISS(www.riss.kr). The search words were 'cold hypersensitivity(冷症)' and 'syncope(厥證)'. Inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials (RCTs), non RCTs, Before and after clinical study (B&A) about CHHF. Selection journals and data extraction were conducted by HS Lee and SH Sun independently. Results : Total twenty-one articles were selected finally. RCTs, non-RCTs, and B&A were 3, 12, and 6, respectively. The topics for CHHF were classified into three categories: effect of treatment (n=2) characteristics (n=11), and diagnosis (n=8). Conclusions : This results showed that RCT about CHHF and treatment effect of cold hypersensitivity of hands and feet were small in number. Further systemic and larger studies about CHHF will be needed.
