  • The graphitization is affected by the addition of small amount of the elements(such as Si, Al, Ni, B, Cr and Mn etc.) and the pre-treatment(such as cold rolling). Boron is well known element to accelerate the graphitization of cementite in high carbon steels. Also, cold rolling is known to accelerate the graphitization. But the graphitization nucleation mechanism by cold rolling is few reported. Therefore the effect of cold rolling in Fe-0.5%C-1.0%Si-0.47%Mn-0.005%B steel on the graphitization is investigated quantitatively using hardness test, optical microscope and scanning electron microscope, neutron induced microscopic radiography. The nucleation of graphite in cold-rolled Fe-0.5%C-1.0%Si-0.47%Mn-0.005%B steel is formed at void which is formed at pearlite/pearlite boundary by cold rolling. But the effect of cold rolling on graphitization in boron addition steel is more effective than that of no boron addition steel due to segregation of BN at void in boron addition steel.

  • A cold spot temperature control system for the batch annealing furnace has been established in order to reduce energy consumption which is essential to improve productivity and stabilize the properties of products. A relationship between annealing cycle time and gas flow rate is developed and also for the variation of coil cold spot temperature with time during heating, and actual temperature measurements at mid-width of each coil during soaking. The results of the temperature variation effect on the cold rolled steel sheet batch annealing are as follows. (1) Cooling rate increasing gradually with increasing atmospheric gas flow, but heating rate is hardly increasing without atmospheric gas component change. (2) In case of short time heating, the slowest heating part is the center of B coil and in case of ling time heating, the low temperature point moves from the center of coil to inside coil. (3) The outside of top coil is the highest temperature point under heating, which becomes the lowest temperature point under cooling. (4) Soaking time determination depends on the input coil width, and soaking time for quality homogenization of 1214 mm width coil must be 2 hours longer than that of 914 mm width coil.

  • In order to study the effect of lubrication during hot rolling, ferritic stainless steel (FSS) sheet were hot-rolled with and without application of lubrication. The effect of two hot rolling processes on the evolution of texture and microstructure after hot rolling, cold rolling and subsequent recrystallization annealing was studied by means of macro-texture analysis and microstructure observations. After hot rolling, the specimen rolled with lubrication showed rolling textures at the sheet surface, while the specimen rolled without lubrication displayed shear textures in the outer layers of the sheet. Hot rolling with lubrication was beneficial to the formation of strong recrystallization textures at sheet surface. However, hot rolling with lubrication led to the formation of orientation colonies in outer thickness layers of the recrystallized sheet.

  • Steel pallet racking industry has globally used from the industrial revolution and has deeply evolved from hot-rolled profile into cold-formed profile to raise the optimization in engineering field. Nowadays, some studies regarding cold-formed steel profile have been performed, but fewer studies in terms of cold-formed pallet racking specifically in connection due to the semi-rigid behavior by lug-hooked into the upright have been conducted. The objective of this study is to review the related literature on steel storage racking connection behavior.

  • In this study, three cold-rolled TRIP steels containing different Al content (0.04wt%, 1.0 wt.% and 2.00wt%) were fabricated to understand the complex effects of Al in TRIP steel. The influences of Al on microstructural evolution of cold-rolled TRIP steels have been analyzed by using advanced analysis techniques, such as transmission electron microscope (TEM) and three dimensional atom probe tomography (3D-APT). TEM results revealed that second phases such as bainte and retained austenite decrease with increase of Al content. In addition, 3D-APT was used to characterize atomic-scale distribution of alloying elements at the constituent phases. Through these analysis techniques, the advanced characteristics of constituent microstructure in TRIP steels were identified depending on Al contents in TRIP steels.

  • A new tree-structured neural network classifier is proposed for the automatic real-time inspection of cold-rolled steel strip surface defects. The defects are classified into 3 groups such as area type, disk type, area & line type in the first stage of the tree-structured neural network. The defects are classified in more detail into 11 major defect types which are considered as serious defects in the second stage of neural network. The tree-structured neural network classifier consists of 4 different neural networks and optimum features are selected for each neural network classifier by using SFFS algorithm and correlation test. The developed classifier demonstrates very plausible result which is compatible with commercial products having high world-wide market shares.

  • The cold rolling conditions for the ultra thin steel for tension mask are very important because the residual stress that affects the flatness of strip is generate during the cold rolling. The residual stress in the sheet causes etching curls when it suffers perforation process. The residual stress through the thickness. To estimate the residual stress and deformation due to etching curl. FEM analysis is performed. Numerical simulation employ a ANSY5 5.6 and an elastic-plastic constitutive equation. The simulation results indicate the distribution of residual stress in the rolled sheet can be controlled by selecting the rolling conditions properly.
