A dust injection system was developed for the lime calcining rotary kiln for the coke dust from the coke dry quenching(CDQ) facility to be used as a fuel. The CDQ dust was injected with the gaseous fuel through the hole in the burner. In order to prevent the spot heating large particles should be removed from dust and dust should be injected as fast as possible so that particle combustion lasts as long as possible without precipitation. This is especially necessary when dust is burned together with gaseous fuel because the gaseous fuel can not go so far and in addition dust combustion aggravates hot spot heating. In this research a rotation drum screen was used to remove particles with diameter larger than 4mm and dust injection speed was 40m/sec. And the burner was adjusted not to use swirl that hinders flame go far away. With these measures scale generation iside the kiln could be reduced to be negligible and in addition NOx emission could be reduced from 150ppm to 20ppm. The fuel reduction was about 85Mcal/T-lime.
Reduction behavior of stainless steelmaking dust by microwave heating process was investigated using coke and charcoal as reducing agents. Pellet dust and stanless steelmaking dust pelletized with reducing agent were reduced by the heating upto $1000^{\circ}C$ in microwave oven. The results showed that charcoal and coke seemed effective in the reduction of metals from stainless steelmaking dust by microwave heating and charocal was found to be better than coke. Degree of reduction seemed similar with the power of 500W and 700W in microwave oven. Dusts were rapidly reduced within 20 minutes. Reducing degree decreased in the order of Fe>Ni>Cr.
High temperature thermal behaviors of EAF dust by coke at initial reaction stage were studied to obtain the fundamental data of EAF dust treatment process, that is Extended Arc Plasma Furnace System called RAPID system. In this study thermal behaviors including calcination of limestone, devolatilization of EAF dust itself, and reduction & devolatilization of mixture(EAF dust : coke : limestone = 80 : 10 : 10 wt.%) were investigated as functions of reaction temperature (1000~1300$^{\circ}C$) and reaction time (3~12 min), considering the 180% equivalence of carbon reduction and 1.7 bacisity for optimum reduction and melting of EAF dust in the RAPID system. Size of sample was about below 0.1 mm for these experiments. Limestone was completely calcined at above 1100$^{\circ}C$ within 1 minutes. In the case of devolatilization of EAF dust itself, weight loss of EAF dust was about 14% at 1300$^{\circ}C$ and 12 minutes, and partial sintering and melting were found in part of sample. Weight loss of mixtures increased with increasing reaction temperature and time, about 46% weight loss in it was occurred at 1300$^{\circ}C$ and 12 minutes. From these weight losses showing devolatilization and reduction of EAF dust, the treatment time of EAF dust inside.
The innovatory process, that is the direct separation and recovery of the iron and zinc metals contained in the high temperature exhaust gas generated from the electric arc furnace fer the inn scrap melting and/or the dust treatment, has been proposed. This proposed process consists of the moving coke bed filter that is directly connected to the electric furnace, and the following heavy metal condenser. The exhaust gas passes through the filter and the condenser right after exhausting from the electric furnace. The moving coke bed filter is being controlled at about 1000℃ and collects iron and slag components contained in the high temperature exhaust gas. Heavy metals such as zinc and lead pass through the filter as vapor. Based on the thermodynamic considerations, the iron oxide and the zinc oxide are reduced in the filter. The solution loss reaction rate is comparatively low at about 1000℃ in the coke bed filter by the analysis using the mathematical simulation model. The heavy metal condenser is installed in the position after the coke bed filter, and rapidly cools the gas from about 1000℃ to 450℃ by a full of the cooling medium like the solid ceramic ball in addition to the cooling from the wall. The zinc and lead vapor condense and separate f개m the gas in a liquid state. The investigation of the characteristics of the exhaust gas of the commercial electric arc furnace, the fundamental experiments of the laboratory scale and the bench scale ensured the formation of this proposed process. A small-scale pilot plant examination is carrying out at present to confirm the formation of the process. It is certain that the dust generation of the electric arc furnace is extremely decreased, and it can save the energy consumption of usual dust treatment processes by the realization of this process.
The degree of iron recovery from dust agglomerates was investigated experimentally to determine the optimum mixing ratio of coke in cold bonded pellet(CBP) which is fed into electric arc furnace(EAE) in the minimill plant. From the XRD analysis for EAF dust, magnetite(Fe$_3$O$_4$) and franklinite(ZnFe$_2$O$_4$) was identified as major components. Maximum iron recovery was obtained for the solid carbon content of approximately 18 weight percent. From plant trials of CBP composed of this optimal mixing condition, it was observed that electric power consumption and sulfur content increased with increasing the quantity of CBP.
A pilot-scale pulse-jet bagfilter was designed, built and tested for the effects of four operating conditions (filtration velocity, inlet dust concentration, pulse pressure, and pulse interval time) on the total system pressure drop, using coke dust from a steel mill factory. Two models were used to predict the total pressure drop according to the operating conditions. These model parameters were estimated from the 180 experimental data points. The empirical model (EM) with filtration velocity, areal density, inlet dust concentration, pulse interval time and pulse pressure shows the best correlation coefficient (R=0.971) between experimental data and model predictions. The empirical model was used as it showed higher correlation coefficient (R=0.971) compared to that of the Multivariate linear regression(MLR) (R=0.961). The minimum pulse pressure predicted by empirical model (EM) was 5kg/$cm^2$.
In this study, using coke dust from ironwork, the pulse pressure on a pulse air jet bag filter was investigated considering the influence of the pressure loss due to filtration velocity and pressure intervals. The research on the optimal pulse pressure prediction of a pulse air jet type bag filter using coke dust showed the following results. Pressure loss volatility produced by the pulse pressure under low dust concentration(0.5, $1g/m^3$) and low face velocity(1.25 m/min) was less than $10mmH_2O$. This suggests that the pulse pressure has a low impact on the pressure loss. In contrast, pressure loss volatility under high dust concentration($3g/m^3$) and high face velocity(1.75 m/min) was $25mmH_2O$. Therefore, pulse pressure with high dust concentration and high face velocity has a strong influence on the pressure loss volatility, compared to the condition of low dust concentration and low face velocity. The optimal pulse pressure of inlet dust concentration($0.5g/m^3$) was $6kg/cm^2$ under the same face velocity(1.75 m/min). As concentration increased from 1 to $2g/m^3$, the pulse pressure gradually reached $5kg/cm^2$ thus indicating that the pulse pressure($5kg/cm^2$) is pertinent at a high concentration($3g/m^3$). The pulse intervals: 20, 25 and 30 sec, which are relatively longer than 10 and 15 sec, corresponded to high pressure loss volatility produced by the pulse pressure. Furthermore, low pressure loss volatility was noted at $5kg/cm^2$ of the overall pulse pressure.
The new empirical static model was constructed on the basis of dimension analysis to predict the pressure drop according to the operating conditions. The empirical static model consists of the initial pressure drop term (${\Delta}P_{initial}$) and the dust mass number term($N_{dust}=\frac{{\omega}_0{\nu}_f}{P_{pulse}t}$), and two parameters (dust deposit resistance and exponent of dust mass number) have been estimated from experimental data. The optimum injection distance was identified in the 64 experimental data at the fixed filtration velocity and pulse pressure. The dust deposit resistance ($K_d$), one of the empirical static model parameters got the minimum value at d=0.11m, at which the total pressure drop was minimized. The exponent of dust mass number was interpreted as the elasticity of pressure drop to the dust mass number. The elasticity of the unimodal behavior had also a maximum value at d=0.11m, at which the pressure drop increased most rapidly with the dust mass number. Additionally, the correlation coefficient for the new empirical static model was 0.914.
A neutralized fabric filter of which major raw materials were polyester and stainless steel fibers was developed and its physiochemical properties and basic filter characteristics were investigated. Four finds of dusts generated in the typical domestic industry were used, which were coke dust from a steel manufacturing process, cement dust from a cement manufacturing process, flu ash from a fluidized-bed combustor, and incinerator ash from a waste plastics incinerator. The physicochemical properties of the neutralized fabric filter were analyzed in terms of changes in tensile strength and initial elastic modulus under $SO_2$ and $NO_2$ atmospheres, mean flow pore pressure, bubble point pore diameter, mean flow pore diameter, and pore size distribution. In addition, the pressure drop, dust penetration, and figure of merit for the fabric filter were investigated in a bench-scale filter testing unit. The pressure drop increased as the filtration velocity and dust loading increased, and its increasing shape depended on the type of dust. The dust penetration rapidly decreased as the dust loading increased irrespective of the type of dust. The figures of merit for the fabric filters increased in the early stage of filtration and then showed rapid decreases followed maintaining a constant level.
Electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) contains compounds, such as oxides and chlorides, including large quantities of Zn, Pb and Fe. An efficient and stable method for the extraction of metal elements from EAFD is the Rotary Kiln Process. This method is used to recover Zn in the form of crude ZnO (approximately 60%) via the addition of a reducing agent (coke, anthracite) and limestone (for basicity control) to EAFD. This process is commonly used in industry as well as in research and development. Currently, this method is used in many Korean commercial plants, producing approximately 150,000 tons of Crude ZnO per year. The majority of Zn is found in crude ZnO (approximately 76%). In addition components such as Pb, Cd, Sn, In, Fe, Cl, and F are present as oxides, chlorides, and alkaline compounds. This elements have an adverse effect on the zinc smelting process. Therefore, a refining process that eliminates these impurities is essential. In this study, we developed a process technology that efficiently separates Zn and Pb from byproducts (mainly chlorides). A bag filter was used to collect Zn and Pb generated during the dry purification process of crude ZnO. Pure components were recovered as metals or metal carbonate.
