Objective : Perinatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and prolonged febrile seizures (pFS) are common neurologic problems that occur during childhood. However, there is insufficient evidence from experimental studies to conclude that pFS directly induces hippocampal injury. We studied cognitive function and histological changes in a rat model and investigated which among pFS, HIE, or a dual pathologic effect is most detrimental to the health of children. Methods : A rat model of HIE at postnatal day (PD) 7 and a pFS model at PD10 were used. Behavioral and cognitive functions were investigated by means of weekly open field tests from postnatal week (PW) 3 to PW7, and by daily testing with the Morris water maze test at PW8. Pathological changes in the hippocampus were observed in the control, pFS, HIE, and HIE+pFS groups at PW9. Results : The HIE priming group showed a seizure-prone state. The Morris water maze test revealed a decline in cognitive function in the HIE and HIE+pFS groups compared with the pFS and control groups. Additionally, the HIE and HIE+pFS groups showed significant hippocampal neuronal damage, astrogliosis, and volume loss, after maturation. The pFS alone induced minimal hippocampal neuronal damage without astrogliosis or volume loss. Conclusion : Our findings suggest that pFS alone causes no considerable memory or behavioral impairment, or cellular change. In contrast, HIE results in lasting memory impairment and neuronal damage, gliosis, and tissue loss. These findings may contribute to the understanding of the developing brain concerning conditions caused by HIE or pFS.
Advertisement for one type of product competes against another type using different advertising strategies. It is important to know which factors influence people's perception of the message within the advertisement and their formation of attitudes towards the advertisement. Using multidimensional scaling, this study investigated what main factors were important when people perceive beverage advertisements on TV. A positioning map was constructed based on similarity ratings of 14 drink advertisements. We examined the meaning of the three dimensions of the positioning map by asking a different group of participants to rate on components of attention, attitudes toward advertisements and products, and intention to purchase the product in each advertisement. It was found that three dimensions in the map was attention to content, color, and motion respectively. More importantly, the attentional component to content was related to the attitude of affection and action toward a beverage introduced in advertisement. These results suggest that content-based attention in advertisements induces a positive attitude toward the advertisements.

Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the memory enhancing properties of extract of Hoelen Cum Radix (HCR) and its possible mechanism in mice of normal condition. Methods : We evaluated the effects of HCR on cognitive function and memory enhancement in normal mice. Male ICR mice were orally administrated with HCR 100 mg/kg for 7 days and equal volume of saline was administrated to the control group in the same condition. We conducted two behavioral tests which measure the spatial working memory (Y-maze test) and cognitive fear memory (passive avoidance test). We also investigated whether HCR affects the hippocampal neurogenesis in the brain. To assess the effects of HCR on neural progenitor cell differentiation and neurite outgrowth in the early stage of hippocampal neurogenesis, we performed doublecortin (DCX), a direct neurogenesis marker, immunohistochemical analysis in the dentate gyrus (DG) of the mouse hippocampus. Results : HCR significantly enhanced memory and cognitive function as determined by the Y-maze test (p<0.05) and passive avoidance test (p<0.001). Moreover, HCR increased DCX positive cells (p<0.01) and neurite length (p<0.01) compared to the control group. These results indicated that HCR stimulates differentiation of neural progenitor cells and promotes neurite outgrowth in hippocampal DG of the mice. Conclusion : We concluded that HCR shows memory enhancing effects through the stimulation of hippocampal neurogenesis as a consequence of accelerated neuronal differentiation and neurite outgrowth in the DG of the hippocampus after HCR treatment.

There are so many research literatures on conceptual change theory and the nature of concepts such as p-prims, mental model, ontological belief, and cognitive structure. Conceptual change means learning (Vosniadou, 1999; Duit;1999). It is necessary to review and elaborate existing conceptual change theories in order to explain the learning process and its implications. Therefore, we derived from reviewing literatures that learners construct new conceptual structure in response to given contexts at the same time activating their beliefs. We reviewed some mental theories that integrated cognitive and affective components and were based on framework/specific theory or information processing theory. We suggest learners' framework of conceptual structure and conflict model of conceptual structure. We expect to obtain effective ways of science teaching and learning and implications for cognitive conflict and conceptual change from using conceptual structure later.
Objectives: This study evaluated the effects of Guibi-tang (GBT) on neuronal apoptosis and cognitive impairment induced by beta amyloid ($A{\beta}$), (1-42) injection in the hippocampus of ICR mice. Methods: $A{\beta}$ (1-42) was injected unilaterally into the lateral ventricle using a Hamilton syringe and micropump ($2{\mu}g/3{\mu}{\ell}$, $0.6{\mu}{\ell}/min$). Water extract of GBT was administered orally once a day (500 mg/kg) for 3 weeks after the $A{\beta}$ (1-42) injection. Acquisition of learning and retention of memory were tested using the Morris water maze. Neuronal damage and $A{\beta}$ accumulation in the hippocampus was observed using cresyl violet and Congo red staining. The anti-apoptotic effect of GBT was evaluated using TUNEL labeling in the hippocampus. Results: GBT significantly shortened the escape latencies during acquisition training trials. GBT significantly increased the number of target headings to the platform site, the swimming time spent in the target quadrant, and significantly shortened the time for the 1st target heading during the retention test trial. GBT significantly attenuated the reduction in thickness and number of CA1 neurons, and $A{\beta}$ accumulation in the hippocampus produced by $A{\beta}$ (1-42) injection. GBT significantly reduced the number of TUNEL-labeled neurons in the hippocampus. Conclusion: These results suggest that GBT improved cognitive impairment by reducing neuronal apoptosis and $A{\beta}$ accumulation in the hippocampus. GBT may be a beneficial herbal formulation in treating cognitive impairment including Alzheimer's disease.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the questions of earth science knowledge presented in elementary science textbooks. In group activities, The questions were created by preservice elementary teachers assuming that they were teaching the earth science knowledge in science education classes at university of education. Types, frequencies, and sources of the cognitive background knowledge of the questions were analyzed. The results demonstrated the followings. First, types, concentrations, and sources of the cognitive background knowledge of the questions were different depending on the domains of earth science. Specifically, in astronomy domain, the frequencies and concentrations of the questions showed different trends compared with other domains in its individual lessons. It suggests that instructional strategies that reflected the difference found in each lessons be appropriately designed and used. Second, it was found that 'schools' was the most dominant sources of the cognitive background. 'Friends' were also found to be very important sources, thus promoting students' interaction with their peers would become an important strategy in science teaching. It was also found that mass media such as 'internet' and 'TV' were roughly rated the same as 'schools' which illustrated that mass media could be utilized in science instruction. Third, since types, concentrations, and frequencies of the questions were diverse in the lessons of units, it is suggested that diverse instruction strategies also be taken into account as an educational approach in teaching the subjects in teacher education.
The purpose of this study is to investigate a cognitive model of task commitment on biology classification inquiry. To achieve this goal, first, this study analyzed several literatures on task commitment in biology inquiry, and invented the tentative model of the task commitment. To investigate a tentative model invented, 2 main tasks were developed. These tasks were administered to 8 high-school students, first grade. Raw protocols were collected by thinking aloud method and a retrospective interview method. Collected protocols were converted to segmented protocols and coded by analyzing frame based invented model. The codes were analyzed. As a result, some problems were discovered, tentative model were revised. New analyzing frame based on Improved model were composed, and raw protocols were re-analyzed. Finally, a cognitive model of task commitment on biology classification inquiry was investigated. The investigated cognitive model of task commitment on biology classification inquiry was constructed 3 steps, 'Task commitment Induction', 'Task commitment Reinforcement', 'Task commitment Maintenance'. And each steps were consisted of several sub-factor. And commitment component were changed in each steps. Through this results, base information for strategy that improvement task commitment on biology classification inquiry is provided. Furthermore, the cognitive model of task commitment on biology classification inquiry will assist on evaluation and feedback by stage on task commitment.

A learner's cognitive conflict with his /her existing conception is regarded to be one of the most important factors for a conceptual change. In this study, the effects of the conflict situation types on inducing students' cognitive conflicts in Newton's law were examined. The thirty-four students of 10th grade were selected from a rural high school based on the result of pre-test. The two different types of conflict situations among many possible types were used in this study. One type was using logical conflict situation and the other was demonstrating real conflict situation. The levels of cognitive conflict were measured by 4-point Likert scale by three interviewers. As the results, the demonstration method was more effective than the logical argument method. In case of the logical argument method, rather than showing scientific conceptions, suggesting another misconception was more effective to the students who have misconception. However, logical argument method was not effective to those who have scientfic conceptions. To the students who have unscientific conceptions, the demonstration method was very effective for inducing cognitive conflict. From the results of this study, demonstration method of teaching seems to be very effective for inducing students' cognitive conflict and overcoming their misconceptions on scientific concept.
Objective : This study aims to identify the status of education in cognitive rehabilitation (CR) in occupational therapy departments of Korean universities/colleges and to analyze the educational needs for professional competencies. Methods : This study was conducted by distributing a questionnaire to professors. The questionnaire extracted items related to professional competencies from the results of a previous Delphi study. A total of 39 respondents from 32 (51.6%) of 62 universities/colleges were analyzed. The questionnaire analysis was conducted using Excel 2010 and SPSS 18.0 to analyze the Borich requirements and the priority of education through the Locus for focus model. Results : The priority of competency in CR was followed by "clinical reasoning ability to explain cognitive problems from the occupational performance perspective", "ability to manage insurance billing for CR", "ability to establish a CR plan based on outcome evaluation", "ability to perform occupation-oriented CR", and "ability to solve problems that occur during CR evaluation and intervention". In the Locus for focus model, items such as occupation-based cognitive assessment, intervention, and skills for documentation were high priorities for education. Conclusion : This study is expected to reflect educational competencies for CR and establish a plan for CR specialists through continuing education.

To examine the cognitive function of onion (Allium cepa L.) beverages (odourless and fortified), we analyzed in vitro neuronal cell protection against $H_2O_2$-induced cytotoxicity and performed in vivo tests on amyloid beta ($A{\beta}$)-induced cognitive dysfunction. Cellular oxidative stress and cell viability were evaluated by DCF-DA assay and MTT assay. These results show that fortified beverage resulted in better neuronal cell protection than odourless beverage at lower concentration ($0{\sim}100{\mu}g/mL$). Fortified beverage also showed more excellent acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity ($IC_{50}$: 4.20 mg/mL) than odourless beverage. The cognitive functions of odourless beverage and fortified beverage in $A{\beta}$-induced neurotoxicity were assessed by Y-maze, passive avoidance, and Morris water maze tests. The results show improved cognitive function in both groups treated with beverages. After in vivo tests, cholinergic activities were determined based on AChE inhibition and acetylcholine levels, and antioxidant activities were measured as SOD, oxidized glutathione (GSH)/total GSH ratio, and MDA levels in mouse brain tissue. In a Q-TOF UPLC/MS system, main compounds were analyzed as follows: odourless beverage (five types of sugars and three types of phenolics) and fortified beverages (six types of phenolics and two types of steroidal saponins).
