Data-Driven Senior Cognitive Response Modeling Using Cognitive Measurement Data (인지측정데이터를 이용한 데이터 기반 시니어 인지반응 모델링)

  • The world's senior population is on the rise. In particular, unlike the past seniors who were in the digital insensitivity class, the smart seniors who want to continue to use smart devices and the Internet are emerging. Although the definition of senior is merely defined as a senior group, research on the characteristics of seniors has been done in psychology studies, but research using data based senior cognitive response is only at an early stage. In order to provide contents according to the cognitive characteristics of Smart Senior, there is a need to classify the cognitive characteristics of Smart Senior well. Therefore, this paper suggests a data - driven senior cognitive response modeling method that helps the enjoyment of culture for seniors through classification of cognitive responses to smart seniors.

Understanding the Arithmetic Mean: A Study with Secondary and University Students

  • In this paper we present a cognitive developmental analysis of the arithmetic mean concept. This analysis leads us to a hierarchical classification at different levels of understanding of the responses of 227 students to a questionnaire which combines open-ended and multiple-choice questions. The SOLO theoretical framework is used for this analysis and we find five levels of students' responses. These responses confirm different types of difficulties encountered by students regarding their conceptualization of the arithmetic mean. Also we have observed that there are no significant differences between secondary school and university students' responses.

High School Students' Ideas and Analysis of Responses Types to Alternative Hypotheses about Cause of Dinosaur Extinction (공룡의 멸종 원인에 대한 고등학생의 생각과 대안적 가설에 대한 반응 유형 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate high school students' ideas related with dinosaur extinction, to classify students' responses types with alternative hypotheses of inconsistent with their ideas, and then to examine their cognitive conflict levels and the degree of ideas change. To investigate students' ideas, we analyzed responses 98 eleventh graders of a high school in Anyang area. The results of this study were as follows: First, most of the students responded a large scale asteroid impact with the cause of dinosaur extinction, and rest of them responded changed Earth's climate accompanying tectonic activity, extreme volcanic activity, shortage of food, disease(virus) and decrease of their habitat. Also, they thought that dinosaur was exterminated not by just one reason but by several complex reasons. Second, the students' responses of alternative hypotheses were classified into six types: rejection, reinterpretation, uncertainty, belief decrease, partial theory change, and theory change. Third, except rejection and reinterpretation types, other four types were arousing of cognitive conflict and the percentage of the students who felt cognitive conflict was 62.3% and that of the students who took the theory change was just 6.1 %.

The Analysis of the Differences of Evaluation Level of Service Encounter Quality, Emotional Responses, Customer Satisfaction and Service Loyalty by Types of Restaurants (레스토랑 유형에 따른 레스토랑 서비스 인카운터 품질 평가 수준, 감정적 반응, 고객 만족 및 서비스 충성도 차이 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the differences of cognitive responses, emotional responses, customer satisfaction, and service loyalty about service encounter quality by types of restaurants and to analyse emotional responses, customer satisfaction, and service loyalty in accordance with level of service encounter quality. The questionnaire were collected from customers (N=812) who had used restaurants in Seoul, aiming at 15 or more-year-old customers from October 24, 2005 to November 6, 2005. The main results of this study were as follows: Statistically significant difference was showed in importance and performance of interaction quality, importance and performance of physical environment quality, performance of outcome quality depending on types of restaurants, while significant difference was not indicated in importance of outcome quality by types of restaurants. Positive emotional response was significantly high by types of restaurants in order of fine-dining restaurants, family restaurants, and fast-food restaurants, while negative emotional responses were significantly higher in fast-food restaurants than in the other two types. As far as Customer satisfaction are concerned, fine-dining restaurants showed higher customer satisfaction than the other two types. Attitudinal service loyalty was high in fine-dining restaurants, family restaurants and fast-food restaurants in order and behavioral loyalty was not significantly different with each type of restaurant. In accordance with level of service encounter quality, cluster analysis was conducted and the clusters were divided into 'high-valuation' and 'low-valuation'. 'High-valuation cluster' and 'low-valuation cluster' showed significant difference depending on types of restaurants that customers used(p<.001). The customers who used fine-dining restaurants and family restaurants valued the performance of service encounter highly. However, in fast-food restaurants, a lot of low-valuation customers existed. Therefore, fast-food restaurants have to improve performance of interaction quality, outcome quality and physical environment quality in service encounter. In addition, in 'high-valuation cluster' who valued service encounter quality highly showed higher scores in positive responses, customer satisfaction, service loyalty than in 'low-valuation cluster', and showed low negative responses.

The Types of Explanation about Different Experimental Data with Students' Preconceptions on Physical Experiment (물리실험에서 선개념과 불일치한 실험 데이터에 대한 학생들의 해석 유형)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the types of explanation about different experimental data on students' preconceptions on physical experiment. 45 students were selected from P University by examining their pre-test. The subjects had a scientific conception about a simple pendulum's period of movement, and expected that there was no change in the movement even when the mass of water increased in the can. The students were presented data about pendulum movement inside a can. They recorded this in a blank table and drew a graph about the movement of the pendulum. The responses of students were tested by presenting written anomalous experimental data. Students' recognition, trust about the anomalous data, cognitive conflict, belief change about their preconceptions were examined with written tests also. To measure students' cognitive conflict levels, CCLT (Cognitive Conflict Levels Test) developed in a previous study was used. Some students responded based on preconceptions and regarded the data as manufactured data or experimental error. The students who recognized the anomaly in the situation showed higher cognitive conflict levels than those who didn't recognize the anomaly in the situation. The students who changed their beliefs about preconceptions recognized the data as anomalous situations and showed high cognitive conflict levels than those who didn't abandon their preconceptions. The students who have unchanged beliefs about their preconceptions regarded the data as experimental error.

A Study on the Factors Affecting Academic Achievement in Non-face-to-face Teaching-Learning

  • In non-face-to-face teaching-learning, a survey was conducted on 55 students in the department of chemistry education at university A on the variables (behavioral control, instructor-learner interaction, cognitive learning) affecting learning satisfaction and academic achievement. There were relatively large positive correlations between variables. The positive correlation between them was found to be the factors that influenced learning satisfaction and academic achievement in non-face-to-face teaching-learning. The average values of non-face-to-face teaching-learning for each variable were lower than the corresponding values of face-to-face teaching-learning, respectively. As a result of the perception survey on the detailed factors of each variable, negative responses were relatively high in factors such as 'concentration of behavior' in behavioral control, 'level-considered explanation' in instructor-learner interaction, and 'knowledge understanding' in cognitive learning.

Instructional Motivation and Response According to Cognitive Style after Application of Computer Assisted Instruction(CAI) for College Student Nurses (일부 간호대학생의 인지 양식에 따른 CAI 학습후 학습동기와 학습평가 비교)

  • Purpose: This study was done to identity the degree of instructional motivation and response after application of CAI in the student nurses' fundamental nursing course. Method: The subjects of this study were 77 student nurses and the data was collected from October, 7th to 17th in 1997. The examination sheet for cognitive style and a questionnaire to evaluate the degree of instructional motivation were used to collect data. Result : 1) It was found that the degree of instructional motivation of the learner was higher in the CAI class. (134.23/170) 2) After CAI, the learners expressed relatively higher satisfaction in understanding, interest, degree of difficulty, number of problems, icons, and extra information. 3) It was found that 53 learners(68.8%) were field independent-cognitive learners and 24 learners(31.2%) were field dependent-cognitive learners. 4) Among the instructional responses according to the cognitive behavior of the learner after CAI, there were significant differences in reasons for understanding the computer program, interest in the computer program class, and the number of students assigned to each computer. 5) There were no significant difference between cognitive style and instructional motivation. Conclusion: The CAI effect for nursing students fundamental nursing course have been positive evaluated. CAI in nursing education is becoming very available and needs to develop effective CAI and use not only fundamental nursing course but also another nursing education programs.

An Analysis of 2nd Grade Students' Interaction in the Classification Activities of LTTS Program (LTTS 분류 활동에서 나타난 초등학교 2학년 학생들의 상호 작용 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of 2nd grade students' interaction in the classification activities of LTTS. For the purposes of this study, three heterogeneous groups, chosen by cognitive level, were selected. The students' interactions were audio/video taped and classified as either cognitive or affective interaction. The results of this study are as follows. In the cognitive interactions, the frequency and quality of the functions of 'questions' and 'making suggestions' were higher than those of 'Responses' and 'Receiving opinions'. In the affective interactions, the frequency of 'induction' and 'dissatisfaction' was higher than that of the other types. The frequency and quality of interactions of students in both the early and mid concrete stage were higher than those of students in the transitional stage. Qualitatively higher-level interactions such as 'making suggestions' and positive interactions such as 'induction' to induce students who were passive in activities were made by the students at higher cognitive levels. However, the low-level of interaction in suggesting their opinion to the constituent's suggestion and 'dissatisfaction' with student in transition period who were passive in activity influenced group working negatively.

Exploratory Study of the Cognitive Function of the Image: Focus on the Thought-Evoking Function (이미지의 인지적 기능에 대한 탐색적 고찰: 사고유발기능을 중심으로)

  • This paper discusses the cognitive function of the image, focusing on the thought-evoking function of the image. Collages artworks were developed to determine how specifically the thought-evoking function of an image takes effect in actual cases. In addition, the cognitive responses of the research participants on the image were analyzed, centering on the thought-evoking function of the image, through an in-depth interview. The image performs the function to concentrate attention on a specific object and to process it more thoroughly. The image increases the immersion of the participants, evoked thought and activated conversation. This study probed the cognitive function of the image and is expected to greatly expand our understanding of human cognition. In particular, it is expected to provide useful insight into the integration of science and art.

The Differences In Knowledges Activated inLaboratory and Earth Environmental Contexts (실험실맥락과 지구환경맥락의 문제해결에서 활성화되는 지식의 차이)

  • Four science concepts were selected from high school earth science textbook to investigate the differences in students knowledges activated in laboratory and earth environmemtal contexts. Two items, one is for laboratory and the other for earth environmental contexts, were develped for each selected concept. Students' responses were analyzed in terms of 'Common Activated Knowledges' (CAK), 'Specific Activated Knowledges'(SAK) across students' cognitive frames, grades and sexes. As contextual differences of the problems increased, gender contributed more than other variables to the frequencies of activating CAK and SAK. Context effects were also reported across cognitive frames for CAK, but SAK became more avtivated when the contextual differences of the items become smaller. As a whole, students with laboratory cognitive frames showed more significant context effects than others. Students in 11th grade, with scientific frames and with earth science cognitive frames showed relatively small context effects. The results of the study showed that sciene concepts learned in a laboratory context are not usually transferred spontaneously to earth environmental contexts. Special instructional strategies should developed to overcome the context effects.
