  • Recently, many researches have been focused on multi-view video applications and services such as wireless video surveillance networks, wireless video sensor networks and wireless mobile video. In multi-view video signal processing, to exploit the strong correlation between images acquired by different cameras plays great role in developing a core technique of multi-view video coding. This paper proposes an adaptive multi-view video interpolation technique which is applicable for multi-view distributed video coding without requiring any cooperation amongst the cameras. The proposed algorithm estimates the non-linear moving blocks and employs disparity compensated view prediction, and then fills in the unreliable blocks. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the proposed method outperforms the conventional methods.

  • The side information in the distributed video coding system is generated using motion compensated interpolation methods. Since the accuracy of the generated side information affects the amount of parity bits for the reconstruction of Wyner-Ziv frame, it is important to produce an accurate side information. In this paper, we analyze the informance of various side information generation methods and propose an effective side information generation technique. Also, we compare each side information generation methods from the hardware point of view and analyze the performance of distributed video coding system using various side information generation methods.

  • In this paper, we propose a new bit assignment scheme for Wyner-Ziv video coding. Distributed video coding (DVC) is a new video coding paradigm which enables greatly low complexity encoding because it does not have any motion prediction module at encoder. Therefore, it is very well suited for many applications such as video communication, video surveillance, extremely low power consumption video coding, and other portable applications. Theoretically, the Wyner-Ziv video coding is proved to achieve the same rate-distortion (RD) performance comparable to that of the joint video coding. However, its RD performance has much gap compared to MC-DCT-based video coding such as H.264/AVC. Moreover, Transform Domain Wyner-Ziv (TDWZ) video coding which is a kind of DVC with transform module has difficulty of exact bit assignment because the entire image is treated as a same message. In this paper, we propose a feasible bit assignment algorithm using adaptive quantization matrix selection for the TDWZ video coding. The proposed method can calculate suitable bit amount for each region using the local characteristics of image. Simulation results show that the proposed method can enhance coding performance.

  • In distributed video coding (DVC) systems, the complexity of encoders is greatly reduced by removing the motion estimation operations in encoders, since the correlation between frames is utilized in decoders. The transmission of parity bits is requested through the feedback channel, until the related errors are corrected to decode the Wyner-Ziv frames. The requirement to use the feedback channel limits the application of DVC systems. In this paper, we propose an efficient method to remove the feedback channel in DVC systems. First, a simple side information generation method is proposed to calculate the amount of parity bits in the encoder, and it is shown that the proposed method yields good performance with low complexity. Then, by calibrating the theoretical entropy with three parameters, we can calculate the amount of parity bits in the encoder and remove the feedback channel. Moreover, an adaptive method to determine quantization parameters for key frames is proposed. Extensive computer simulations show that the proposed method yields better performance than conventional methods.

  • In this paper, we propose a distributed multi-view video coding method employing illumination compensation for multi-view video coding. Distributed multi-view video coding (DMVC) methods can be classified either into a temporal or an inter-view interpolation-based ones according to ways to generate side information. DMVC with inter-view interpolation utilizes characteristics of multi-view videos to improve coding efficiency of the DMVC by using side information based on the inter-view interpolation. However, mismatch of camera parameters and illumination change between two views could bring about inaccurate side information generation. In this paper, a modified distributed multi-view coding method is presented by applying illumination compensation in generating the side information. In the proposed encoder system, in addition to parity bits for AC coefficients, DC coefficients are transmitted as well to the decoder side. By doing so, the decoder can generate more accurate side information by compensating illumination changes with the transmitted DC coefficients. We found that the proposed algorithm is $0.1{\sim}0.2\;dB$ better than the conventional algorithm that does not make use of illumination compensation.

  • Recently, lots of research works have been actively focused on the DVC (Distributed Video Coding) techniques which provide a theoretical basis for the implementation of light video encoder. However, most of these studies have showed poorer performances than the conventional standard video coding schemes such as MPEG-1/2, MPEG-4, H.264 etc. In order to overcome the performance limits of the conventional approaches, several channel-divided distributed video coding schemes have been designed in such a way that some information are obtained while generating side information at decoder side and then these are provided to the encoder side, resulting in channel-divided video coding scheme. In this paper, the interpolation scheme by weighted sum of multiple motion-compensated interpolation frames is introduced and a new channel-divided DVC scheme is designed to effectively describe noisy channels based on the motion vector and its matching characteristics. Through several simulations, it is shown that the proposed method performs better than the conventional methods at low bit-rate and keeps the reconstructed visual quality constantly.

  • Wyner-Ziv video coding is a new video compression paradigm based on distributed source coding theory of Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv. Wyner-Ziv coding enables light-encoder/heavy-decoder structure by shifting complex modules including motion estimation/compensation task to the decoder. Instead of performing the complicated motion estimation process in the encoder, the Wyner-Ziv decoder performs the motion estimation for the generation of side information in order to make the predicted signal of the Wyner-Ziv frame. The efficiency of side information generation deeply affects the overall coding performance, since the bit-rates of the Wyner-Ziv coding is directly dependent on side information. In this paper, an improved side information generation method using field coding is proposed. In the proposed method, top fields are coded with the existing SI generation method and bottom fields are coded with new SI generation method using the information of the top fields. Simulation results show that the proposed method improves the quality of the side information and rate-distortion performance compared to the conventional method.

  • In this paper, we propose a channel estimation of side information method based received motion vectors for distributed video coding. The proposed decoder estimates motion vectors of side information and transmits it to the encoder. As the proposed encoder generates side information which is the same to one in the decoder with received motion vectors, accuracy of side information of the decoder is assessed and it is transmitted to decoder. The proposed decoder can also estimate accurate crossover probability with received error information. As the proposed method conducts correct belief propagation, computational complexity of the channel decoder decreases and error correction capability is significantly improved with the smaller amount of parity bits. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is better in rate-distortion performance and it is faster than several conventional distributed video coding methods.

  • Side information generation techniques play a great role in determining the overall performance of the DVC (Distributed Video Coding) coding system. Most conventional techniques for side information generation are mainly based on the block matching algorithm with symmetric motion estimation between the previously reconstructed key frames. But, these techniques tend to show mismatches between the motion vectors and the real placements of moving objects. So these techniques need to be modified so as to search well the real placements of moving objects. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes a block-centered symmetric motion estimation technique which uses the same coordinates with the given block. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional schemes in the objective quality.
