  • Cockpit 내에서도 다른 사회영역과 마찬가지로 "기장", "부기장"이라는 직함 및 직급에 의한 상하관계의 권력거리가 형성된다. 권력거리가 높은 우리나라 사회에서는 다른 사회영역과 마찬가지로 Cockpit 내에서도 권력거리가 높게 나타남은 분명한 사실이다. 그러므로 사회적 심리거리를 느끼는 부기장은 기장에게 운항안전에 관한 조언을 하는 데 있어서 상대적으로 위축되며, 또한 그러한 분위기도 형성되어 있지 않다. 따라서 승무원 간의 긴밀한 협력이 요구되는 Cockpit 환경에서 상호 간의 적극적인 Communication이 이루어져야 하지만 이러한 사회적 분위기 때문에 조언이 위축되고 크고 작은 운항안전 event, 심지어는 대형 사고로 이어질 수 있는 위험성을 내포하고 있다. 따라서 한국식 사고와 문화적 의식을 지니고 있는 조종사들은 문화적 마찰을 겪을 수 있다. 이러한 그들의 문화가 잘 스며든 효율적이고 안전한 운항을 위해서는 간단히 말해 그들의 문화와 맞추는 노력이 필요하다. 즉, 권력거리가 낮추는 연습이 필요 하다. 따라서 교육훈련도 거기에 맞추는 권력거리를 낮은 방식의 교육훈련이 효과적일 수 있다. 권력거리가 낮은 문화권의 교육의 중심은 교관과 학생간의 낮은 권력거리가 특징이다. 이를 바탕으로 교육훈련의 중심을 학생중심으로 맞추어 학생의 적극적인 참여를 이끌며, 교육자인 교관은 "Facilitator"로서의 역할을 수행할 필요성이 있다. 결과적으로는 학생과 교관과의 낮은 권력거리를 체험, 연습하게 되며, 실제 라인에서도 이러한 관계가 기장 부기장으로 이어지는 상하관계에 있어서도 주도적으로 참여, 조언할 수 있는 밑바탕을 제공해주어야 한다.

The Effects of Inclusiveness between Team Members on Psychological Safety and Improvement Efforts in a Commercial Airline Cockpit (조종실 내의 개방성이 심리적 안전감과 조종 수행 참여도 향상에 주는 영향: 민간 항공 기장과 부기장을 대상으로)

  • This study aims at determining psychological elements that influence team coordination between a captain and a first officer in a commercial airline cockpit. It also examines how these elements interact between one another in different team membership settings. It was hypothesized that mutual inclusiveness of differential status among pilots enhances psychological safety and engagement in safety improvement efforts. Survey results based on 254 airline pilots suggest that status (captain, first officer) and mutual inclusiveness (openness between team members) influence psychological safety and mutual inclusiveness moderates the relationship between status and psychological safety. The results also suggest that psychological safety is positively associated with engagement in safety improvement efforts and partially mediates the relationship between mutual inclusiveness and improvement efforts. This study provides insights into antecedents of fostering safety improvement efforts in airline crew teams in which cultural differences and professional hierarchy exist.

Anthropometric Analysis of Korean Helicopter Pilots for Helicopter Cockpit Design (헬리콥터 조종실 설계를 위한 헬리콥터 조종사 인체측정 및 분석)

  • To design the cockpit of Korean helicopter, anthropometric data for Korean helicopter pilots as a target population is necessary. The present study measured the body sizes of Korean helicopter pilots to design the cockpit of Korean helicopter, and compared the measurements with those of Korean civilian and the US Army. The sample size was 100 which determined by a statistical analysis. Anthropometric measurements were collected for 100 samples (male = 94, female = 6; age group = 20~40) of Korean helicopter pilots by applying standard measurement protocol. To compare three anthropometric data, Korean civilian and US Army data were controlled by considering age group (20~40) and gender ratio (male: female = 9:1) of Korean helicopter pilots. The average body sizes of Korean helicopter pilots were mostly similar to those of Korean civilian, however, lower limb related variables (hip breadth, popliteal height and thigh clearance) and shoulder-to-elbow length were significantly greater (1~7%) at α=0.05. Furthermore, the average body sizes for Korean helicopter pilots regarding lower limb length and thickness were significantly smaller than those of the US Army (1~12%); however, the average body sizes for Korean helicopter pilots regarding upper body related variables (sitting height, sitting eye height, and acromial height) and hip breadth were significantly greater (0.7~1.9%). Lastly, size variability for Korean helicopter pilots was significantly smaller than those of Korean civilian and the US Army. Anthropometric data for Korean helicopter pilots of the present study was applied to design and evaluate a Korean helicopter cockpit.

  • 현대 항공기의 특징인 자동화나 컴퓨터화는 조종석(Glass cockpit)에서의 조종사 임무를 변화시켜, 과거에는 항공기를 조종하기 위하여 속도, 고도, 항로를 유지하는 것이 주된 임무였으나, 현대 항공기의 경우에는 이러한 일은 거의 모두 자동화 되어 조종사는 일명 'Glass cockpit' 내에서 화면을 통하여 비행 진행 상태를 모니터하고 필요한 사항을 컴퓨터에 입력하여 지시하는 형태로 바뀌었다. 따라서 조종사 교육제도도 과거의 기술(Skill)이나 절차(Procedure)를 위주로 하던 형태에서, 이제는 조종사에게 관리자(Manager)로서의 능력을 부여할 수 있는 교육내용이 요구되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 항공기술 발전과 특히 미래 항행시스템의 개발에 관하여 살펴보고, 운항환경 변화에 따른 변화된 조종사의 역할과 이를 기준으로 우리나라의 대표적 민간 조종사 교육기관이라 할 수 있는 한국 항공대학교 항공운항학과와 대한항공의 기초비행 훈련원, 아시아나 항공의 초기조종사 훈련과정(Ab-initio)의 교육내용을 비교 분석하여 앞으로 조종사 교육에 있어서 추가되어야 하거나 개선되어야 할 내용에 관하여 연구하였다.

Pilots' Understandings on the Pilot Education Curriculum and Teaching-Learning Methods (조종사교육 교과목과 교수;학습방법에 대한 조종사의 의식)

  • The analyses of the aircraft accidents across all of the world, including Korea, reported that 70 % of the accidents could be attributed to the faults of pilots' human factors. It implied that the aircraft accidents could be cut down remarkably if the pilots' faults were reduced. In this context, the purpose of the study were to explore and reduce the problems of authoritarian job performance in the cockpit operation of which mainly depended on the captain, though it was supposed that two or more pilots work together as a team. In relation to this, the current worldwide trend of pilot education had tended to emphasize education on the human factors of pilots since the strong recommendation of the International Civil Aviation Organization in the 1980's. From the educational dimension of the pilots, it was attempted to explore a new educational perspective which would enhance the flight crew's performance of the cockpit through improving the courses of the pilot education curriculum and the teaching-learning methods.

A Study on the Impedimental Factors for Flight Safety of Cockpit Automation Systems (조종석 자동화 시스템의 안전저해요인에 관한 연구)

  • Accident statistics cite the flightcrew as a primary contributor in about 70 percent of accidents involving transport category airplanes. The introduction of modem flight deck designs, which have automated many piloting tasks, has reduced or eliminated some types of flightcrew errors, but other types of errors have been introduced. To identify the impedimental factors in highly automated modem airplane cockpit systems, this study used readily available information sources and case study, From the evidence, this study identified issues that show vulnerabilities in pilot management of automation, situation awareness, communication between pilots and controllers, pilot's training and evaluation methods. The next step will require the aviation community to solve these problems for the safety improvement.

Aircraft flight simulator development for ergonomics test (인간공학실험용 항공기 모의비행훈련장비 개발)

  • An aircraft simulator for ergonomics testing and pilot training was developed from the joint work Agency for Defense Development(ADD) and Daewoo Heavy Industry, LTD, in Korea at first time. It is basically to satisfy the requirements established by FAA-AC-120-40C ( 1995-JAN-26). The aircraft simulator will be used mainly for ergonomics testing and pilot training for basic trainer on ADD and Korea Air Force in near futrue. This simulator reproduces faithfully the cockpit and flight characteristics of the KTX-1 aircraft. It is one of the latest full flight simulators that have the CGI(computer graphic image) visual system and six degree of freedom motions system. Development efforts focused on user-oriented design approach for ergonomics testing and flight training of pilots. Main characteristics of each subsystem are described such as cockpit, instruments, control loading system, motion system, visual system, aural system, instructor operation station and aircraft simulation softwear.
