Objectives To evaluate the effectiveness of Chuna manual therapy (CMT) for postpartum hypogalactia. Methods Using nine electronic databases, we selected 13 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that applied CMT for postpartum hypogalactia and conducted a meta-analysis. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results Meta-analysis showed statistically significant results for CMT in terms of effective rate and breast filling degree compared to the other treatment groups (p<0.05). Conclusions Our study showed clinical evidence of CMT efficacy for postpartum hypogalactia. Further studies are required to support our findings.
Phosphatidylserine (PS) is an essential component of the cerebral cortex and is associated with cognitive function. In this systematic review, the effects of PS on cognitive function in the elderly population are examined. The literature search included PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases. Subsequently, nine studies, including five randomized controlled trials and four pre-post studies, were selected. There were 961 participants in the selected studies; PS dosage varied from 100 to 300 mg/d, and the experimental period ranged from 6 weeks to 6 months. Five out of the nine selected studies were assessed to have a 'low' risk of bias, whereas the other four studies were assessed to have 'some concerns' regarding the risk of bias. The results of the meta-analysis concluded that PS had a positive effect on the memory of older adults with cognitive decline. Thus, PS appears to improve age-associated cognitive decline, especially memory, with no adverse effects.
Objectives The purpose of this study was to systematically review previous studies on constitutional herbal medicine treatment for the obesity. Methods A total of 11 databases were searched in English, Chinese, and Korean. Standard methodologies for the systematic review were used to search, analyze and synthesize data for undertaking review and meta-analysis for intervention. The risk of bias was assessed by two independent researchers using the Cochrane risk of bias. Results A total of 2 RCTs were selected and analyzed. The results of the meta-analysis showed a significantly positive effect in the body weight and body mass index for the patient group treated with Taeeumjowi-tang compared to the placebo control group. Conclusions Our results suggested that Taeeumjowi-tang could be considered for improvement of symptoms in obese patients, without serious adverse events. Due to the low quality of the clinical evidence in this study, further studies are needed to evaluate efficacy and safety of constitutional herbal medicines for obesity.
A total of 1,235 studies were retrieved on June 23, 2019, from 3 databases. Selected 59 studies were evaluated by year of publication, study type, subject condition/disease, acupoint, standards for reporting interventions in clinical trials of moxibustion (STRICTOM), Cochrane risk of bias (RoB), and risk of bias assessment tool for non-randomized study (RoBANS). Most studies were conducted in 2011, after which the number of studies decreased. The most common study type was 25 case reports (CR), 16 uncontrolled clinical trials (UCT), 11 randomized controlled trials (RCT), and 7 controlled clinical trials (CCT). Moxibustion treatment was mainly used for musculoskeletal and circulatory diseases/conditions. A total of 83 acupoints were used, A-shi points being the most used. As for STRICTOM, an average of 7.4 items were satisfactory for UCT and CR without a control group, and an average of 9.4 items were satisfactory for RCT and CCT. RCT was assessed using the RoB, and many items were rated as uncertain. In this study, the need for RCT of moxibustion treatment in Korea was identified. The detailed description of study methods and results will provide evidence for the efficacy of moxibustion treatment in preventive and therapeutic aspects of Korean traditional medicine.
Objectives: This study is purposed to investigate the effect and safety of laser therapy for stroke patients by systematic review and meta-analysis of the randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Methods: RCTs on the treatment of laser therapy for stroke patients were selected among the literature published from January 2000 to June 2022 in twelve domestic and foreign databases. The quality of the literature was evaluated using the Cochrane's Risk of Bias tool and RevMan 5.4 was used for the synthesis of results. Results: Total 2,598 patients with stroke were finally selected from 18 RCTs. Meta-analysis showed that laser therapy was effective in significantly improving activities of daily living (MBI), motor function (effective rate), upper motor function (FMA-UE), shoulder pain related factors (CGRP, ET-1, BK). Overall, the risk of bias was uncertain or low in the quality assessment of the literature. Conclusions: Although it is unclear that laser therapy is more effective than sham laser, laser therapy might be more effective in improving symptoms than conventional rehabilitation alone. Furthermore, no serious adverse events were founded in laser therapy studies. However, the quality of the selected literature was generally low. Therefore, further studies with high methodological quality on laser therapy for stroke patients would be required in the future.
Purpose: This study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of exercise program on recovery of functional and quality of life in breast cancer patients through systematic literature review and meta-analysis. Methods: The following databases were used to search the literature: RISS, KISS, KMbase, and KoreaMed. Keywords included 'breast cancer', 'mastectomy' 'exercise', 'rehabilitation', 'intervention' and the evaluated articles were published from 2009 to 2018. The statistical was used R program, the effect size of shoulder functionality, grip strength, upper limb, pain and QOL were calculated by random-effects model. Results: 7 RCT studies were meta-analyzed and were evaluated for the risk of bias by the RoB of Cochrane Collaboration; the overall risk of bias was low. The effect sizes of exercise program was flexion (g=1.11), abduction (g=0.97) as indicated by a "large effect size". Conclusion: It is necessary to study the develop and apply a exercise programs to improve the function and quality of life in breast cancer patients.
Objectives: The purpose of this review was to overview and evaluate the efficacy of acupoint sticking therapy for women with endometriosis. Methods: We searched for randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) using acupoint sticking therapy on endometriosis in 5 electronic databases such as EMBASE, Pubmed, and CAJ. The results of the studies were analyzed and the risk of bias was assessed by using Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results: Two RCTs were included for analysis. In the selected studies, Treatment group was higher effective cure rate than any control group. In one RCT, Acupoint sticking therapy was only used, but the other RCT was treated acupoint sticking therapy combined with acupuncture. So, Interventions in 2 studies were not same, Quantitative synthesis was impossible. Conclusion: The limitation of this review is that the number of studies included is small. However, our systematic review provides a basis for acupoint sticking therapy for endometriosis. Acupoint sticking therapy was considered as one of external treatment method for patients with endometriosis.
Objectives The objective of this study is to report the evidence that continuous passive motion (CPM) therapy combined with Korean Medicine is effective for knee injuries. Methods We searched 2 Korean medical electronic databases, and 2 Chinese electronic databases to find randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) that treat knee injuries with Korean Medicine combined with CPM therapy. We selected studies by screening. We extracted data from selected RCTs, and analyzed RCTs by using Cochrane's Risk of bias criteria. Results 386 studies are searched, and 7 RCTs are selected. According to the study, several kinds of Korean Medicine such as hydrotherapy, decoction, acupuncture, moxibustion, and manual therapy are used with CPM therapy for the knee joint postoperative rehabilitation. We found the encouraging evidence that Korean Medicine and CPM combined therapy is more effective than single CPM therapy by alleviating pain, increasing range of motion, and improving knee function, etc. However, the risk of bias in most RCTs was judged to be uncertain. Conclusions Combination of Korean Medicine and CPM therapy can compensate the defect of single CPM therapy, and promotes the recovery of knee joint function.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze clinical studies on the effectiveness of TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) for pompholyx treatment and provide evidence for Korean medicine use. Methods Randomized controlled trials (RCT) which used TCM as a treatment for pompholyx were searched in China National Infrastructure (CNKI) platform. The risk of bias of studies was assessed by using Cochrane risk of bias (RoB) 2.0 tool. Results The selected 10 RCTs showed that the experimental group treated with either TCM alone or with a combination of TCM and Western medicine showed more significant therapeutic effect compared to the control group which Western medicine alone. Conclusions Based on the studies from China, TCM may be an effective treatment for pompholyx. This provides evidence for Korean medicine use, and its possible effectiveness in treating pompholyx
This systematic review aimed to assess the effect of premedication on postoperative pain after root canal treatment in vital teeth. Five electronic databases were searched for randomized clinical trials, and two independent reviewers selected eligible studies, extracted data, and assessed the quality of studies using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Meta-analysis was conducted using the random-effects model, and the pooled effect estimate of the standardized mean difference (SMD) between premedication and placebo was calculated. Subgroup analysis was conducted based on the class and route of the drug. Studies with a high risk of bias were excluded from the sensitivity analysis. Ten trials satisfied the inclusion criteria, of which eight were included in the meta-analysis. Premedication was more effective in reducing postoperative pain than placebo at 6 hours (SMD = -1.00; 95% confidence interval [CI] = -1.33 to -0.66), 12 hours (SMD = -0.80; 95% CI = -1.05 to -0.56), and 24 hours (SMD = -0.72; 95% CI = -1.02 to -0.43). The results of the sensitivity analysis confirmed the findings of the primary analysis. Based on these results, it can be concluded that premedication is effective in reducing postoperative pain in teeth with irreversible pulpitis. However, additional quality studies are required for further validation.
