The remote measurement system(RMS) as a new experimental method is limited in its application to crack measurement at elevated temperatures because of the oxide layer on the specimen surface. Since TiAIN and Cr coating layers have a high resistance to oxidation and wear, this paper proposed a TiAIN and Cr coating technique for specimens to facilitate the measurement of crack growth behavior using RMS. To investigate the effects of the coating layer, tension and fatigue tests were carried out at room temperature and at $538^{\circ}C$. The test material was 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel which is widely used as a turbine rotor material. From the experimental results, it was found that the mechanical properties of the TiAIN and Cr coated specimens were similar to those of the substrate. Accordingly, the TiAIN and Cr coated layer had hardly any influence on the fatigue crack propagation.

This paper was performed to investigate the effect of pore structure on ink residual behavior. To prepare different coating structures as substrates against inks, fine, medium and coarse calcium carbonate were used in the coating color. It is well known ink properties can affect to print qualities. After printing on the coated paper, ink layer can consider as third structure addition to paper and coating layer. To compare effect of ink properties on the surface structure and print qualities, several properties of ink were also adopted as raw material. Particle size of pigment effect on gloss evaluation of coated paper increased with calendering. It was shown that ink transfer rate increased as surface of the sample was smooth. The ink contained low viscosity resin evaluated more print gloss. Finer pigment particle size, smaller pore size and higher porosity. Pore volume of coated paper was slightly decreased with printing as the coating was prepared with the finest particle size. However, it founded that ink resin could not affect on pore volume and distribution of printed paper
The effect of the stoichiometry on the sliding wear properties of NiAl coatings has been investigated. Three different powder mixtures with the compositions of Ni-50at%Al, Ni-54at%Al and Ni-42at%Al were diepressed respectively, and which were subsequently coated on mild steel through combustion synthesis in an induction heating system. Sliding wear behavior of the coatings was examined against an alloyed tool steel using a pin-on-disc type sliding wear test machine. As results, it could be seen that powder mixture(Ni-54at%Al) with displaying Al-rich deviations from the stoichiometry of NiAl(Ni-50at%Al) was promoted the most the synthetic reactivity. The microstructure of the coating layer with the compositions of Ni-54at%Al exhibits the porous NiAl single phase structure. However, the microstructure of the coating layer of the compositions of Ni-42at%Al exhibits the denser multi-phase structure containing several intermediate phases in addition to NiAl. Densification of the coating layer was enhanced by increasing the reacting temperature. On the other hand, the wear properties of the coating layers showed that the wear mode at speeds of around 1 m/s was severe wear, regardless of the stoichiometry and reacting temperature. However, wear properties of coating layer with the compositions of Ni-42at%Al were superior to those of coating layer with the compositions of Ni-54at%Al. This would be attributed by the fact that coating layer with the compositions of Ni-42at%Al develops little void and much intermediate phases with high strength.
Effects of contact damage and residual stress for two kinds of dental restorative layered ceramics, porcelain/alumina and porcelain/zirconia bilayers, were observed with Hertzian and Vickers indentation methods. Indentation stress-strain behavior of each material, strength degradation of the coating material, and crack propagation behavior in the coating layer after Vickers indentation were examined by an optical microscope. As a result, porcelain as coating materials showed the classical brittleness. It was inferred that damage and strength in two bilayer system were dependent on thermal expansion mismatch between the coating material and the substrate, which affected the strength degradation. Residual stress resulting from thermal expansion mismtch was formed in the coating layer, and specially in the case of porcelain/zirconia, residual stress was eliminated as coating thickness decreased.

This review deals with one of the surface modification techniques, chemical conversion coating and particularly cerium-based conversion coatings (CeCC) as a promising substitute for chromium and phosphate conversion coating on magnesium and its alloys. The CeCCs are commonly considered environmentally friendly. The effects of surface preparation, coating thickness, bath composition, and e-paint on the corrosion behavior of CeCCs have been studied on the AZ31 magnesium alloy. This review also correlates the coating microstructural, morphological, and chemical characteristics with the processing parameters and corrosion protection. Results showed that the as-deposited coating system consists of a three layer structure (1) a nanocrystalline MgO transition layer in contact with the Mg substrate, (2) a nanocrystalline CeCC layer, and (3) an outer amorphous CeCC layer. The nanocrystalline CeCC layer thickness is a function of immersion time and cerium salt used. The overall corrosion protection was crucially dependent on the presence of coating defects. The corrosion resistance of AZ31 magnesium alloy was better for thinner CeCCs, which can be explained by the presence of fewer and smaller cracks. On the other hand, maximum corrosion protection was achieved when AZ31 magnesium samples with thin CeCCs are e-painted. The e-paint layer further restricts and hinders the movement of chloride and other aggressive ions present in the environment from reaching the magnesium surface.

Coating layers on a coated sheet steel frequently affect distributions of strain rate of sheets and deteriorate the frictional characteristics between sheets and tools in sheet metal forming. Thus, it is important to identify the deformation behavior of these coatings to ensure the success of the sheet forming operation. In this study, the technique using nano-indentation test, FE-simulation and Artificial Neural Network(ANN) were proposed to determine the power law stress-strain behavior of coating layer and the power law behavior of extracted coating layers was examined using FE-simulation of drawing and nano-indentation process. Also, deep drawing test was performed to estimate the formability and frictional characteristic of coated sheet, which was calculated using the linear relationship between drawing force and blank holding force obtained from the deep drawing test. FE-simulations of the drawing process were respectively carried out for single-behavior FE-model having one stress-strain behavior and for layer-behavior FE-model which consist of coating and substrate separately. The results of simulations showed that layer-behavior model can predict drawing forces with more accuracy in comparison with single-behavior model. Also, mean friction coefficients used in FE-simulation signify the value that can occur maximum drawing force in a drawing test.
This paper presents an analysis of thermal stress induced along the interface between a polymeric coating layer and a steel substrate as a result of uniform temperature change. The epoxy layer is assumed to be a linear viscoelastic material and to be theromorheologically simple. The viscoelastic boundary element method is employed to investigate the behavior of interface stresses. The numerical results exhibit relaxation of interface stresses and large stress gradients, which are observed in the vicinity of the free surface. Since the exceedingly large stresses cannot be borne by the polymeric coating layer, local cracking or delamination can occur at the interface corner.

A pure hafnium-carbide (HfC) coating layer was deposited onto carbon/carbon (C.C) composites using a vacuum plasma spray system. By adopting a SiC buffer layer, we successfully integrated C.C composites with a $100-{\mu}m-thick$ protective coating layer of HfC. Compared to the conventional chemical vapor deposition process, the HfC coating process by VPS showed increased growth rate, thickness, and hardness. The growth behavior and morphology of HfC coatings were investigated by FE-SEM, EDX, and XRD. From these results, it was shown that the addition of a SiC intermediate layer provided optimal surface conditions during the VPS procedure to enhance adhesion between C.C and HfC (without delamination). The thermal ablation test results shows that the HfC coating layer perfectly protected inner C.C layer from thermal ablation and oxidation. Consequently, we expect that this ultra-high temperature ceramic coating method, and the subsequent microstructure that it creates, can be widely applied to improve the thermal shock and oxidation resistance of materials under ultra-high temperature environments.

In-situ observation in SBM on the microfracture behavior of coating layer was performed for GA steel sheets that have various Fe contents and thickness of coating layer. In case of cross sectional side of coating layer that was in a tensile stress state during bending, fine perpendicular crack pre-induced during galvannealing grew and propagated rapidly toward the coating surface with the increase of strain. And then it grew and propagated along the ${\Gamma}/Fe$ matrix interface, and combined with the nearest another perpendicular crack. Consequently, flaking occurred. The more Fe content and thickness of coating layer increased, the more average crack interval and flaking resistivity increased. Exfoliation was little observed at coating surface in a tensile stress state.

Thermal sprayed Cu-Ni alloy coating on the carbon steel was carried out impingement erosion-corrosion test and electrochemical corrosion test in the marine environment. The impingement erosion-corrosion behavior and electrochemical corrosion characteristics of substrate(SS400) and thermal sprayed Cu-Ni coating was investigated, and the corrosion control efficiency of Cu-Ni coating to substrate was estimated quantitatively. Main results obtained are as follows : 1) The weight loss rate of Cu-Ni coating layer by the impingement erosion-corrosion compared with substrate was smaller in high specific resistance solution than in low specific resistance solution. 2) The corrosion potential of Cu-Ni coating layer spray coating in the marine environment became more noble than that of substrate. 3) With the lapse of time, corrosion current density of Cu-Ni coating layer became stable, but that of substrate was increased. 4) As the corrosion control efficiency of Cu-Ni coating layer in the marine environment was over 90%, its anti-corrosion characteristics was excellent.
