  • Changes in the interactions among incident ocean water waves, coastal debris (marine debris), and the back vegetation zone line on a natural sandy beach on the island of Jinu-do in the Nakdong river estuary were investigated. The study involved a cross-sectional field survey of the beach, numerical modeling of incident ocean water waves, field observations of the distribution of coastal debris, and vegetation zone line tracking using GPS. The conclusions of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) The ground level of the swash zone (sandy beach) on Jinu-do is rising, and the vegetation zone line, which is the boundary of the coastal sand dunes, shows a tendency to move forward toward the open sea. The vegetation zone line is developing particularly strongly in the offshore direction in areas where the ground level is elevated by more than 1.5 m. (2) The spatial distributions of incident waves differed due to variations in the water depth at the front of the beach, and the wave run-up in the swash zone also displayed complex spatial variations. With a large wave run-up, coastal debris may reach the vegetation zone line, but if the run-up is smaller, coastal debris is more likely to deposit in the form of an independent island on the beach. The deposited coastal debris can then become a factor determining which vegetation zone line advances or retreats. Finally, based on the results of this investigation, a schematic concept of the mechanisms of interaction between the coastal debris and the coastal vegetation zone line due to wave action was derived.

  • Recent changes in the coastal sea surface temperatures (SST) in Korea are studied by time series analysis of daily SST data during the last 60 years (1936-1995) at 18 coastal observation stations of the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute. The climate of coastal SST in Korea are rapidly changing in recent years. General trends of coast SST changes in Korea are as follows. The annual averages of SST are increasing. The annual ranges of SST variation are decreasing. The winter SST are increasing while the summer SST have a decreasing tendency. Climatic changes in coastal SST in recent 30 years (1965-1995) are more pronounced than those in the last 60 years (1936-1995). The observed trend of coast SST implies that the climate in Korea shows a tendency to shift from temperate zone to subtropical zone.

  • The paper presents the results of a study on the desired observing system which setting the high-level objectives for an integrated, sustained, national coastal observing system. Knowledge of the coastal zone is demanded by many constituencies, including fishermen, fisheries managers and climatologist, harbor pilots, coastal zone managers, environmental protection professionals etc. Many of these needs are being partially met by coastal zone observing system elements, both satellite and in situ. Nevertheless, these have not enough developed in an integrated manner and have been funded and operated to meet their own purpose. Thus, this study presents the development and application method for a national coastal zone observing system, which is integration of disparate observational systems and data sets to maximize their utility for many users and purposes.

  • Study of the background and state of Osaka's waterfront space development and analysis of the functions of 22 chosen major facilities of development project reveals the following four types: amenity-oriented development, large-scale synthesis type development, renewal compound area type development, exchange communication promotion type development. Osaka bay area has served primely as the base of harbors, industry and energy, while analysis of the ongoing project has found that the city has been making a functional transition to a type of development to live up to the needs of the times, suggesting that is wise that Korea's future direction of waterfront development be oriented toward environmental-friendly development by taking advantage of low-density area's natural resources. Given the plurality and complexity of the law of coastal zone, what is needed is a legal maintenance for coastal zone's clear-cut coordinating function and for environmental-friendly development with the limitations of seaside and coastal functions in mind.

  • Recently, the risk of safety accidents in the coastal zone has been increased due to revitalization of marine leisure and tourism. Because of a lack of regulations about technical and maintenance aspect for safety facilities, the effective measures to prevent safety accidents in the coastal zone have not taken with increasing rate of the accidents. The nature of land/sea and behavioral characteristics of a fisherman/port laborer/tourist/people at leisure should be taken into account properly when safety facilities to prevent safety accidents in the coastal zone are installed, since the characteristics of land/sea and many activities such as fishery, harbor works, tour, leisure are mixed in the geographic and environmental condition of the coastal zone. This study analyzes the current problems on the safety facility in the domestic coastal zone through the domestic and foreign(Hongkong, Macau) field survey. Also the direction of the improvement about the safety facility are proposed.

  • This study analyzed on characteristics of the ground-water capture zone in coastal areas and mid-mountainous area according to pumping rate. For this study, it targeted Jejudo island where is the volcanic island. To analyze, MODFLOW model and MODPATH model, which are the ground-water flow analysis models, were used. As a result of research, the following conclusions could be obtained. As a result of analyzing influence of a change in pumping time upon length of capture zone, the length of capture zone in coastal area was indicated to be greater in the changing ratio compared to the length of capture zone in mid-mountainous area. Next, in the coastal area, the pumping rate and the capture-zone length are changing similarly. However, in mid-mountainous area, the length of capture zone was indicated to grow when the pumping rate comes to exceed 1,500m3/day. As a result of analyzing influence of a change in pumping time upon capture area, the tendency of a change in the area was indicated similarly in coastal areas and mid-mountainous area. Especially, it could be known that the larger pumping rate leads to the more definite increase in tendency to a change in capture area. Based on this study, it was allowed to be possibly used in the suitable pumping rate in coastal areas and mid-mountainous area of the volcano island in the future. A follow-up research is judged to necessarily analyze the influence of tubular-well group upon capture zone by additionally analyzing a change in capture zone targeting the concentrated tubular well.

  • In order to understand the characteristics of beach deformation, in this study, numerical simulations were conducted using a 3-D hydro-morphodynamic model (HYMO-WASS-3D) to analyze the characteristics of beach deformation due to the coastal groundwater levels. HYMO-WASS-3D directly analyzed the nonlinear interaction between the hydrodynamic and morphodynamic processes in the coastal area. The simulation results of HYMO-WASS-3D showed good agreement with the experimental results on the changes in the profile of the beach in the surf and swash zones. Then, numerical simulations were conducted to examine the characteristics of beach deformation due to the variation of the level of the coastal groundwater. As a result, the beach profiles were examined in relation to the wave breaking in the surf zone and the wave uprush and backwash in the swash zone due to the differences in the water levels. This paper also discussed the temporal and spatial distributions of the velocities, vorticities, and suspended sediments in the surf and swash zones with various levels of the coastal groundwater.

  • The coastal zone is the transitional area between land and sea. It plays an important role in the land-sea ecosystem. Unfortunately, most of the world's coastal areas are polluted due to the human being activities. Pollution and development are changing coastal habitats, and feeding and nursery areas are being destroyed, reducing fish and wildlife populations. The pollution in coastal areas is becoming a global environmental problem, more and more attention has been paid to coastal areas. America passed the Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA) in 1972, and from then, CZMA outlined and conducted the National Coastal Zone Management Program and the National Estuarine Research Reserve System which including 34 projects. And England established "the Crouch & Roach Estuary Project" in 2003, and "South East Coastal and Marine Project" was started in 2007 in responding to the non-point pollutants challenge.
