  • This study reports, for the first time, the ivestigation of the distribution of Korean saxicolous lichens in the coastal rocks of U-do islet, which is known as an unpolluted zone in Jeju. More than thirty lichens were obtained and investigated from the coastal rocks frequently contacted by seawater. A molecular analysis using PCR amplification of the rRNA ITS regions revealed the coastal rock lichens could be placed into 8 families and 14 genera, Ramalinaceae (Bacidia, Ramalina), Physciaceae (Buellia, Dirinaria, Phaeophyscia, Physcia, Pyxine), Lecanoraceae (Candelaria, Lecanora), Parmeliaceae (Xanthopannelia), Graphidaceae (Graphis), Pertusariaceae (Pertusaria), Rhizocarpaceae (Rhizocarpon), and Teloschistaceae (Caloplaca), showing a diversity of lichens, with foliose (flat leaf-like), crustose (crustlike), and fruticose (miniature shrub-like) life forms might be distributed in the coastal rocks. These findings suggested the possibility that the lichens identified in the present work might be resistant to a salty environment.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the productivity of fisheries in China's coastal areas (including inland and marine fisheries) and to analyze the factors influencing the development of fishery economy in each province by comparing regional differences. The input indicators used for efficiency analysis are fish farms, ships and staff numbers, and the output indicators are fish catch and net income. In this paper, we used six years of data from 2013-2018 and DEA-Malmquist index was used to analyze the efficiency of coastal fisheries production in 11 areas of China's coast. According to the analysis from 2013 to 2018, the fishery output efficiency in China's coastal areas has improved to some extent, but most provinces and regions are characterized by technological progress, and the technological efficiency still needs to be further improved. The conclusion can provide reference for the development planning and policy measures of regional fishery industry in China's coastal areas.

  • Fishery industry is an important part of agricultural industry in coastal countries. The purpose of this study is to use the theory of industrial competitiveness for reference, use Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Delphi method to establish the evaluation index system, and analyze the fishery industry competitiveness of 11 coastal provinces in China. This study data came from China Fishery Statistical Yearbook 2020. The results show that Shandong Province is the most competitive province in fishery industry among the coastal provinces. The inter-provincial differences are great. Not only the resource endowment is the factor that affects the fishery industry competitiveness, but also the long-term profitability is too. The proportion of recreational fishery in the fishery economic output value has become one of the main indicators to measure the competitiveness of the fishery industry. The findings of this study suggest that all regions should adopt measures in accordance with local conditions, promote the integrated development of the fishery industry, enhance the added value of fishery products and enhance the competitiveness of fishery industry. The disadvantage of this study is that the fishery industry competitiveness of China's coastal provinces is only compared and analyzed. The future direction is to carry out a comparative study on the international competitiveness of fishery with other east Asian countries.

  • In this study, the use survey of domestic and international weather information on coastal regions and the demand survey (e.g. general and in-depth surveys) for customer needs with coastal industries were carried out to design customized coastal weather contents. The general demand survey showed that most of the customers working in the coastal industries were interested in a short-term forecast, such as a general weather outlook (approximately 29% of the total respondents) and typhoon information (19%), and they preferred to be given the forecast information from new media such as the internet web-pages (36%) and mobile utilities (23%) rather than old media such as TV (16%) and radio (11%). In addition, only 31% of the total respondents were found to be satisfied with the use of the current coastal weather service. This low percentage might mainly be a result of lack of information accuracy (about 64%) and diversity (28%). From in-depth survey with site visiting, the need of coastal weather contents, such as weather elements, data form, a tool of communication, and forecast interval, differed with the working stages in three coastal industries (e.g. shipbuilding, maritime trade, and passenger transport industries).

  • In coastal area of Inchon, dredging and the disposal of dredged material for sea-wall construction and reclamation have increased in recent years. These activities may impact the benthic environment and result in changes in benthic communities, but little information is available on the extent and direction of these changes. We investigated whether there have been changes in the dominant macrobenthic species and benthic community over the last decade, and explored the relationship between environmental variables and spatial patterns of macrobenthic community structure. We sampled macrobenthos and recorded environmental variables in the coastal habitats of Inchon in March and June 2004. In total, 212 macrobenthic species were recorded during this study, predominately crustaceans $(34{\%})$, mollusks $(32{\%})$ and polychaetes $(21{\%})$. The mean density of macrobenthos was $1,393\;ind./m^{2}$.The most abundant species was Amphioplus japonicus $(20.5{\%})$, followed by Heteromastus filiformis $(14.4{\%})$, Theora fragilis $(8.2{\%})$ and Ampharete sp. $(4.0{\%})$. Over the past decade the dominant macrobenthic species in this area shifted. Multivariate analysis (multidimensional scaling) revealed significant differences in community structure among three regions: the middle part of the sampling area (B), site 8 (C) and other sites (A). Mean density varied significantly among the three regions, but no differences in the number of species and diversity (H') were observed. The distribution of the macrobenthic community was affected by environmental variables such as percentage sand content and sediment kurtosis. Species that were important in different areas included A. japonicus in region A, Raeta puchella in region B and T. fragilis in region C. The important species in regions B and C were filter-feeding bivalves, and the abundance of these species may be related to the increase in percentage sand content. We suggest that the sediment composition (percentage sand content) may be an important factor in determining the dominant species and structure of the macrobenthic communities in coastal Inchon. Long-term monitoring programs are necessary to understand ongoing changes in the benthic communities of this area.

  • The distribution shapes of air and water temperatures are basic and essential information, which determine the frequency patterns of their occurrence. It is also very useful to understand the changes in long-term air and water temperatures with respect to climate change. The typical distribution shapes of air and water temperatures cannot be well fitted using widely used/accepted normal distributions because their shapes show multimodal distributions. In this study, Gaussian mixture distributions and kernel distributions are suggested as the more suitable models to fit their distribution shapes. Based on the results, the tail shape exhibits different patterns. The tail is long in higher temperature regions of water temperature distribution and in lower temperature regions of air temperature distribution. These types of shape comparisons can be useful to identify the patterns of long-term air and water temperature changes and the relationship between air and water temperatures. It is nearly impossible to identify change patterns using only mean-temperatures and normal distributions.

  • To figure out the geographical distribution of Gynaecotyla squatarolae and Microphallus koreana metacercariae in Korea, shore crabs of southwestern coastal areas were examined. Eight coastal areas in Inchon-si (A), Gyeonggi-do (B), Chungcheongnam-do (C, D, and E), Jeollabuk-do (F), and Jeollanam-do (G and H) were selected, and 2 kinds of crabs, Macrophthalmus dilatatus and/or Macrophthalmus japonicus, were caught. After transportation to the laboratory, 15 crabs per each group were grouped and ground in a mortar and pestle, and examined for microphallid metacercariae. In M. dilatatus, G. squatarolae metacercariae were recovered from 3 (C, E, and H) out of 6 regions, but M. koreana metacercariae were not recovered. In the case of M. japonicus, G. squatarolae metacercariae were recovered from 6 (B, D, E, F, G, and H) of 7 areas surveyed, and M. koreana matacercariae were detected from 5 regions (A, B, D, F, and H). These results indicate that the life cycle of G. squatarolae is maintained in the western coastal areas using M. dilatatus and M. japonicus as intermediate hosts, while that of M. koreana is maintained only using M. japonicus.

  • In the recent year, the urbanization is emerging as important issue for sustainable development in China. Like the most of the world, urbanization of China is closely related with the domestic market development, the innovation of industrial structure, and the reduction of income cap among regions, urban-rural region and so on. This paper analyzes the impact of urbanization on economic growth using cross section data and time series data of the eastern coastal regions in China. Based on the existing literature, we establish a hypothesis, which is basically the same as Williamson(1965)'s hypothesis, that urbanization promotes the economic growth at the early stages of development but has adverse effects in economies that have reached a certain income level. The results of study are as follows: Using 10-provinces data of the eastern coastal region in China, this paper examines the impact of urbanization on economic growth. Regression results suggest that Williamson's hypothesis is not verified, regardless of estimation methods in two models. Hence, the results show that the impact of urbanization on economic growth has not the inverse U-type function in the eastern coastal region of China.

  • We report the distributions of Sb and As in the surface sediment of the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas of Korea. The mean concentrations of Sb and As range from 0.68 ppm to 1.01 ppm and from 7.4 ppm to 15.8 ppm, respectively, and show relatively the high concentrations at the coast of Weolseong in the East Sea for Sb and at the coast of Gadeok Island in the South Sea far As. This may be due to the anthropogenic input of these elements via river and atmosphere from industry complex and agriculture regions around the study areas. Because of the difference of clay to silt proportion, the correlation between silt plus clay contents and Sb, As in the coastal surface sediment of Korea is not shown, the concentrations of Sb and As vary widely for the sample in which the silt plus clay contents are the same. Therefore, we suggest that the distribution patterns of Sb and As in surface sediment of the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas of Korea are mainly controlled by the anthropogenic inputs and the sediment characteristics. On the other hand, the Sb concentrations are lower than those of the lowest effect level which is the standard of judgment for contamination, while the As concentrations are higher than those of the lowest effect level. This implies that the surface sediments of the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas of Korea are considerably contaminated for As.
