This study is concerned with a correlation of microstructure and local brittle zone (LBZ) in offshore structural steel welds. The influence of the LBZ on fracture toughness was investigated by means of simulated heat-affected zone (HAZ) tests as well as welded joint tests. Micromechanical processes involved in void and cleavage microcrack formation were also identified using notched round tensile tests and subsequent SEM observations. The LBZ in the HAZ of a multiphase welded joint is the interstitially reheated coarse grained HAZ, which is influenced by metallurgical factors such as effective grain size, the major matrix structure and the amount of high-carbon martensite-austenite (M-A) constituents. The experimental results indicate that Chirpy energy was found to scale monotonically with the amount of M-A constituents, confirming that the M-A constituent is the major microstructural factor controlling the HAZ toughness. In addition, voids and microcracks are observed to initiate at M-A constituents by the shear cracking process. Thus, the M-A constituent played an important role in initiating the voids and microcracks, and consequently caused brittle fracture.
This study was investigated on the impact toughness and microstructure of welded metal and heat affected zone for B grade steel. With welding procedures, welding heat inputs applied were 30, 79 and 264 kJ/cm, Prior austenite grain size in coarse zone has increased with increasing welding heat input for B grade steel. The toughness of fusion line zone of Bgrade steel has decreased with increasing welding heat input while the toughness fusion line +3 and +5 mm zone increased contrarily.
The transition of serrated grain boundary and its effect on liquation behavior in the simulated weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) have been investigated in a wrought Ni-based superalloy Alloy 263. Recently, the present authors have found that grain boundary serration occurs in the absence of adjacent coarse ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ particles or $M_{23}C_6$ carbides when a specimen is direct-aged with a combination of slow cooling from solution treatment temperature to aging temperature. The present study was initiated to determine the interdependence of the serration and HAZ property with a consideration of this serration as a potential for the use of a hot-cracking resistant microstructure. A crystallographic study indicated that the serration led to a change in grain boundary character as special boundary with a lower interfacial energy as those terminated by low-index {111} boundary planes. It was found that the serrated grain boundaries are highly resistant to boron enrichment, and suppress effectively grain coarsening in HAZ. Furthermore, the serrated grain boundaries showed a higher resistance to susceptibility of liquation cracking. These results was discussed in terms of a significant decrease in interfacial energy of grain boundary by the serration.
Recently developed Austenite stainless steel,309L was to overlay on 3Cr-1Mo-V-Ti-B steels, using Electroslag welding process, which wide electrodes were adopted. Transition region in welding interlayer relating to disbonding crack was investigated. Also. the effect of welding condition on the width of transition region and coarsening grains of the austenite were studied.1) With increasing welding speed the width of martensite at transient region was increased, but the amount of delta ferrite in weld metal was reduced, being fine grained.2) The form of martensite at the transition region was occured by reversible transition region, leading to increasing Ms point.3) With increasing welding speed, the grain of austenite formed at the welding interface was finer. With increasing welding current under the same welding speed, the grain size of the austenite was finer. At high current, original grain size of the austenite is coarse, but the austenite has fine grains because the austenite was transformed to martensite during cooling.4) In the case of high welding speed, the width of martensite at the welding interface was increased, but the grain size of austenite at the welding interface was finer. This indicates that the inhibition of disbonding crack may be achieved through dispersening fine carbides in the grain boudary.(Received August 3, 1999)
Silicon nitride is one of the most successful engineering ceramics, owing to a favorable combination of properties, including high strength, high hardness, low thermal expansion coefficient, and high fracture toughness. However, the impact damage behavior of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics has not been widely characterized. In this study, sphere and explosive indentations were used to characterize the static and dynamic damage behavior of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics with different microstructures. Three grades of $Si_3N_4$ with different grain size and shape, fine-equiaxed, medium, and coarse-elongated, were prepared. In order to observe the subsurface damaged zone, a bonded-interface technique was adopted. Subsurface damage evolution of the specimens was then characterized extensively using optical and electron microscopy. It was found that the damage response depends strongly on the microstructure of the ceramics, particularly on the glassy grain boundary phase. In the case of static indentation, examination of subsurface damage revealed competition between brittle and ductile damage modes. In contrast to static indentation results, dynamic indentation induces a massive subsurface yield zone that contains severe micro-failures. In this study, it is suggested that the weak glassy grain boundary phase plays an important role in the resistance to dynamic fracture.
Post weld heat treatment (PWHT) is carried out to increase the fracture toughness in heat affected zone(HAZ) and remove the residual stress. There occur some problems such as toughness decreement and stress relief cracking(SRC) in the coarse grained HAZ subjected to the effect of tempering treatment. Especially, embitterment of structure directly relates to the mode of fracture and is appeared as the difference of fracture surface, that is, grain boundary failure. Therefore, in this paper, PWHT was carried out under the stress of 0, 10, 20 and $30kg/cm^2$ to simulate residual stress in HAZ welded by heat input of 10, 30 and 40KJ/cm. Applied stress in weld HAZ during PWHT assisted precipitin of over saturated alloying element in the structure, and grain boundary failure according to welding heat input didn't almost appear at the heat input of 10 KJ/cm, but it appeared from being the applied stress of $30kg/cm^2$ at $30KJ/cm and 20kg/mm^2$ at 40KJ/cm.

In this study, three kinds of bainitic steels are fabricated by controlling the contents of vanadium and boron. High vanadium steel has a lot of carbides and nitrides, and so, during the cooling process, acicular ferrite is well formed. Carbides and nitrides develop fine grains by inhibiting grain growth. As a result, the low temperature Charpy absorbed energy of high vanadium steel is higher than that of low vanadium steel. In boron added steel, boron segregates at the prior austenite grain boundary, so that acicular ferrite formation occurs well during the cooling process. However, the granular bainite packet size of the boron added steel is larger than that of high vanadium steel because boron cannot effectively suppress grain growth. Therefore, the low temperature Charpy absorbed energy of the boron added steel is lower than that of the low vanadium steel. HAZ (heat affected zone) microstructure formation affects not only vanadium and boron but also the prior austenite grain size. In the HAZ specimen having large prior austenite grain size, acicular ferrite is formed inside the austenite, and granular bainite, bainitic ferrite, and martensite are also formed in a complex, resulting in a mixed acicular ferrite region with a high volume fraction. On the other hand, in the HAZ specimen having small prior austenite grain size, the volume fraction of the mixed acicular ferrite region is low because granular bainite and bainitic ferrite are coarse due to the large number of prior austenite grain boundaries.

With increasing welding current under the same welding speed, the grain size of the austenite was finer. The article presents the results of examination of the fractal dimension D of concrete specimen fracture surfaces obtained in fracture toughness tests. The concretes were made from three different types of coarse aggregate: gravel, dolomite and basalt aggregate. Ordinary concretes (C40) and high-performance concretes (HPC) were subjected to testing after 7, 14, 28 and 90 days of curing, respectively. In fracture toughness and compressive tests, different behaviours of concretes were found, depending on the type of aggregate and class of concrete (C40, HPC). A significant increase in the strength parameters tested occurred also after a period of 28 days (up to the $90^{th}$ day of curing) and was particularly large for concretes C40. Fractal examinations performed on fracture replicas showed that the fractal dimension D was diverse, depending on the coarse aggregate type and concrete class being, however, statistically constant after 7 and 14 days for respective concretes during curing. The fractal dimension D was the greater, the worse strength properties were possessed by the concrete. A cross-grain crack propagation occurred in that case, due to weak cohesion forces at the coarse aggregate/mortar interface. A similar effect was observed for C40 and HPC made from the same aggregate. A greater dimension D was exhibited by concretes C40, in which case the fracture was easier to form compared with high-performance concretes, where, as a result of high aggregate/mortar cohesion forces, the crack propagation was of inter-granular type, and the resulted fracture was flatter.
In the present study, the microstructure and Charpy V notch toughness of multipass $CO_2$ FCA weldment in three different heat inputs(1-3KJ/mm)were investigated. The weldments using two different domestic FCAW wires(AWS E71T-1 and E71T-5 equivalent) in C-Mn steel were chemically analysed. The following conclusions can be inferred. 1. T-1 wire Showed a stable arc transfer, less spatter and harsh, a better bead spreading and easy slag removal, whereas T-5 wire suffered from the arc stability, which tended to increase spatter and produce a more convex bead. 2.The microsturctures of the top beads of the weldments in three different heat inputs consisted of coarse-grained boundary ferrite and Widmanstatten ferrite side plate with increasing heat inputs. The modest fraction of acicular ferrite in the two wire weldments was observed in the 2KJ/mm heat input. 3.The fine-grained reheated zones of both welds consisted of a duplex microstructure of polygonal ferrite and second phases. 4. The basic flux weldment of T-5wires showed a higher Charpy impact property than that of T-1 wires because of a higher fraction of acicular ferrite in the weld microstructure.
