Objectives : As the prevalence of elderly depression increases, it becomes urgent problem to provide preventive and management measures. But in practice, it is difficult to detect depression in early stage. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between sociodemographic factors and depression in elderly welfare facility users in a city. Methods : In this research, the severity of depression and sociodemographic factors(gender, age, education, co-morbid disease, housing type, number of children, number of family members living with the subjects) was evaluated through PHQ-9 and interview. Using the data, the associations of depression and sociodemographic factors were analyzed. Based on PHQ-9 depression cut-off value(10 points), the subjects were divided into two groups, and the difference of the variables between groups were analyzed statistically. Results : 'Own house'(YES/NO), education(less than elementary school graduation/more than elementary school graduation) were sociodemographic factors which showed significance difference in mean PHQ-9 scores. Group with Over PHQ-9 10 points showed less 'having their own house' and less education level than group with less PHQ-9 10 points. Conclusions : With this research, it is expected that the risk factors for the elderly depression can be understood and the measures for early detection and invention of elderly depression would be provided.

The amount of exploitable groundwater amount in Korea has been determined by multiplying the 10-year frequency low precipitation by the recharge rate. In practice, however, the interpretation of the frequency analysis of precipitation is omitted, and the value obtained by multiplying the average recharge rate by the minimum precipitation in the recent 10 years is used as the recharge amount. Therefore, the contradiction arises that the amount of precipitation to be applied is determined according to the period selection rather than the actual low precipitation by the 10-year frequency analysis. In this study, we proposed a method for estimating the exploitable groundwater amount using the recharge amount considering the moving averaged 10-year minimum precipitation and the size of precipitation. This method was applied to the Uiwang, Gwacheon and Seongnam areas and the exploitable groundwater amount was calculated and compared with the results obtained by conventional methods. As a result, it has been confirmed that if the 10-year minimum precipitation is selected in the period including the extreme drought, the problem of underestimating the exploitable groundwater amount can be overcome by using the moving average minimum precipitation.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Reducing the number of adipocytes by inducing apoptosis of mature adipocytes as well as suppressing differentiation of preadipocytes plays an important role in preventing obesity. This study examines the anti-adipogenic and pro-apoptotic effect of red pepper seed water extract (RPS) prepared at $4^{\circ}C$ (RPS4) in 3T3-L1 cells. MATERIALS/METHODS: Effect of RPS4 or its fractions on lipid accumulation was determined in 3T3-L1 cells using oil red O (ORO) staining. The expressions of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and adipogenic associated proteins [peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-${\gamma}$ ($PPAR-{\gamma}$), CCAAT/enhancer-binding proteins ${\alpha}$ (C/EBP ${\alpha}$), sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), fatty acid synthase (FAS), and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC)] were measured in 3T3-L1 cells treated with RPS4. Apoptosis and the expression of Akt and Bcl-2 family proteins [B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), Bcl-2-associated death promoter (Bad), Bcl-2 like protein 4 (Bax), Bal-2 homologous antagonist/killer (Bak)] were measured in mature 3T3-L1 cells treated with RPS4. RESULTS: Treatment of RPS4 ($0-75{\mu}g/mL$) or its fractions ($0-50{\mu}g/mL$) for 24 h did not have an apparent cytotoxicity on pre and mature 3T3-L1 cells. RPS4 significantly suppressed differentiation and cellular lipid accumulation by increasing the phosphorylation of AMPK and reducing the expression of $PPAR-{\gamma}$, C/EBP ${\alpha}$, SREBP-1c, FAS, and ACC. In addition, all fractions except ethyl acetate fraction significantly suppressed cellular lipid accumulation. RPS4 induced the apoptosis of mature adipocytes by hypophosphorylating Akt, increasing the expression of the pro-apoptotic proteins, Bak, Bax, and Bad, and reducing the expression of the anti-apoptotic proteins, Bcl-2 and p-Bad. CONCLUSIONS: These finding suggest that RPS4 can reduce the numbers as well as the size of adipocytes and might useful for preventing and treating obesity.

The purpose of this study is to understand the college students' needs for software curriculum which based on surveys from educational satisfaction of the software lecture evaluation, as well as to find out the improvement plan by applying the text content analysis method. The research method used the text content analysis program to calculate the frequency of words occurrence, key words selection, co-occurrence frequency of key words, and analyzed the text center and network analysis by using the network analysis program. As a result of this research, the decent points of the software education network are mentioned with 'lecturer' is the most frequently occurrence after then with 'kindness', 'student', 'explanation', 'coding'. The network analysis of the shortage points has been the most mention of 'lecture', 'wish to', 'student', 'lecturer', 'assignment', 'coding', 'difficult', and 'announcement' which are mentioned together. The comprehensive network analysis of both good and shortage points has compared among key words, we can figure out difference among the key words: for example, 'group activity or task', 'assignment', 'difficulty on level of lecture', and 'thinking about lecturer'. Also, from this difference, we can provide that the lack of proper role of individual staff at group activities, difficult and excessive tasks, awareness of the difficulty and necessity of software education, lack of instructor's teaching method and feedback. Therefore, it is necessary to examine not only how the grouping of software education (activities) and giving assignments (or tasks), but also how carried out group activities and tasks and monitored about the contents of lectures, teaching methods, the ratio of practice and design thinking.

The authors obtained the discrete hedging rule for a reservoir's water supply operation by applying mixed-integer programming to save more water by earlier rationing of water supply for a drought period. The 'water supply adjustment guide' is the current operational method applied to the multipurpose reservoirs, and it was derived by a simulation method. Applying the two rules to the Hapcheon multipurpose dam's reservoir simulations with the inflow record from 2003 to 2018, the water supply deficit occurred for the long drought from 2015 to 2018. Especially, the no water supply or intermittent water supply persisted for the second half of 2017. The water supply adjustment guide had the 'normal water supply recovery threshold on storage,' which resulted in the water supply being unavailable in July 2017; then, the water supply suspension occurred until January 2018, when the reservoir storage was greater than the normal water supply recovery threshold. Despite the storage increasing due to the inflow of water into the reservoir, the suspension occurrence needs to be improved in practice. The current water supply adjustment guide and the discrete hedging rule for a reservoir's water supply operation are useful and realistic as the reservoir operation guide, which shows the concept of reducing water supply during the drought phase as scientific figures. However, to improve the reservoir simulation results, which do not provide any or intermittent water for several months, it is necessary to increase the current water supply reduction for drought phases.

This study presents the bogie arrangement of the load-out system for on-ground shipbuilding. The load-out system is one of the most important systems to perform the bogie arrangement of the on-ground shipbuilding technique without dry dock facilities, and this system is composed of four pieces of equipment: bogies, driving bogie with motors, trestles, and power packs. Also, the bogie arrangement analysis (BAA) is employed to simply calculate the reaction forces at the trestle for structural safety. In this context, the purpose of this study is to propose an optimal design method to perform the bogie arrangement satisfying structural safety requirements with minimal cost. It is expected that the proposed methodology will contribute to the effective practice as well as to the improvement of competitive capability for shipbuilding companies at the on-ground shipbuilding stage. Furthermore, we describe some problems and their solutions of the deformation that may occur in the bottom of the hull during the load-out process. As a result, it is shown that we applied it to the 114K crude oil tanker (Minimum bogie 54EA) and the 174K CBM LNG carrier (Minimum bogie 88EA), it can minimize the number of bogie and critical risks (Safety rate 1.61) during the load-out of on-ground shipbuilding. Through this study, the reader will be able to learn successful load-out operation and economic shipbuilding in the future.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Considering the high number of deaths from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Latin American countries, together with multiple factors that increase the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, we aimed to determine 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels and its association with mortality in patients with critical COVID-19. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This was a prospective observational study including adult patients with critical COVID-19. Data, including clinical characteristics and 25(OH)D levels measured at the time of intensive care unit admission, were collected. All patients were followed until hospital discharge or in-hospital death. The patients were divided into those surviving and deceased patient groups, and univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to determine independent predictors of in hospital mortality. RESULTS: The entire cohort comprised 94 patients with critical COVID-19 (males, 59.6%; median age, 61.5 years). The median 25(OH)D level was 12.7 ng/mL, and 15 (16%) and 79 (84%) patients had vitamin D insufficiency and vitamin D deficiency, respectively. The median serum 25(OH)D level was significantly lower in deceased patients compared with surviving (12.1 vs. 18.7 ng/mL, P < 0.001). Vitamin D deficiency was present in 100% of the deceased patients. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that age, body mass index, other risk factors, and 25(OH)D level were independent predictors of mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin D deficiency was present in 84% of critical COVID-19 patients. Serum 25(OH)D was independently associated with mortality in critical patients with COVID-19.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma co-activator-1α (PGC-1α) has a central role in regulating muscle differentiation and mitochondrial metabolism. PGC-1α stimulates muscle growth and muscle fiber remodeling, concomitantly regulating lactate and lipid metabolism and promoting oxidative metabolism. Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thumb.) has been widely employed as a traditional herbal medicine and possesses antioxidant, anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, hypolipemic, hypoglycemic, and anticancer properties. We investigated whether G. pentaphyllum extract (GPE) and its active compound, gypenoside L (GL), affect muscle differentiation and mitochondrial metabolism via activation of the PGC-1α pathway in murine C2C12 myoblast cells. MATERIALS/METHODS: C2C12 cells were treated with GPE and GL, and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and western blot were used to analyze the mRNA and protein expression levels. Myh1 was determined using immunocytochemistry. Mitochondrial reactive oxygen species generation was measured using the 2'7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate assay. RESULTS: GPE and GL promoted the differentiation of myoblasts into myotubes and elevated mRNA and protein expression levels of Myh1 (type IIx). GPE and GL also significantly increased the mRNA expression levels of the PGC-1α gene (Ppargc1a), lactate metabolism-regulatory genes (Esrra and Mct1), adipocyte-browning gene fibronectin type III domain-containing 5 gene (Fndc5), glycogen synthase gene (Gys), and lipid metabolism gene carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1b gene (Cpt1b). Moreover, GPE and GL induced the phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase, p38, sirtuin1, and deacetylated PGC-1α. We also observed that treatment with GPE and GL significantly stimulated the expression of genes associated with the anti-oxidative stress response, such as Ucp2, Ucp3, Nrf2, and Sod2. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicated that GPE and GL enhance exercise performance by promoting myotube differentiation and mitochondrial metabolism through the upregulation of PGC-1α in C2C12 skeletal muscle.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Oocyte lipid droplets play a crucial role in meiosis and embryo development. Biotin is associated with fatty acid synthesis and is the coenzyme for acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC). The effects of a biotin deficiency on the oocyte lipid metabolism remain unknown. This study examined the effects of a biotin deficiency and its replenishment on murine 1) oocyte lipid droplet levels, 2) ovary lipid metabolism, and 3) oocyte meiosis. MATERIALS/METHODS: Mice were divided into 3 groups: control, biotin deficient (BD), and recovery groups. The control and BD groups were fed a control diet or BD diet (0.004 or 0 g biotin/kg), respectively. The recovery group mice were fed a BD diet until day 21, and were then fed the control diet from days 22 to 64. This study then quantified the oocyte lipid droplet levels, assessed the oocyte mitochondrial function, and examined the ability of oocytes to undergo meiosis. Ovarian phosphorylated ACC (p-ACC), lipogenesis, β-oxidation, and ATP production-related genes were evaluated. RESULTS: The BD group showed a decrease in lipid droplets and mitochondrial membrane potential and increased p-ACC levels. In the recovery group, the hepatic biotin concentration, ovarian p-ACC levels, and mitochondrial membrane potential were restored to the control group levels. On the other hand, the quantity of lipid droplets in the recovery group was not restored to the control levels. Furthermore, the percentage of oocytes with meiotic abnormalities was higher in the recovery group than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: A biotin deficiency reduced the oocyte lipid droplet levels by downregulating lipogenesis. The decreased lipid droplets and increased oocyte meiosis failure were not fully restored, even though the biotin nutrition status and gene expression of lipid metabolism was resumed. These results suggest that a biotin deficiency remains robust and can be long-lasting. Biotin might play a crucial role in maintaining the oocyte quality.
