  • The index of energy intensity(energy/GDP) has been a primary policy concern since it can clarify industry sectors which use energy intensively and generate $CO_2$ emission heavily. Although energy intensity index may be suitable for estimating $CO_2$ emission from an isolated industry sector, we need an index for induced $CO_2$ emission since industrial activities are interconnected in terms of input and output. By employing Environmental Input-Output Table 2000, this paper analyses the flow of energy demand and pollutants after first estimating an induced $CO_2$ emissions from various industrial sectors and economic activities. The paper reports higher induced $CO_2$ emissions from industry sectors with larger energy intensity since they produces goods or services retaining relatively considerable environmental load. Furthermore, it is shown that environmental load and $CO_2$ emissions in overall economy are likely increasing when the products of energy intensive industrial sector is used as inputs for less intensive sectors' production process. The result suggests we need consistent policy efforts to reduce energy intensity to lower $CO_2$ emissions.

  • Nowadays, CO2 lasers are used widely in many applications such as materials fabrication, communications, remote sensing and military purpose etc. It is important to control the laser output power in those fields. In this paper, current resonant half-bridge inverter and Cockcraft-Walton circuit are used to vary the laser output power. This laser power supply is designed and fabricated which has less switching losses and compact size. Also we used an IGBT(Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) as a switching device of a power supply and PIC one-chip microprocessor are used to control the gate signal of the IGBT precisely. We investigated the output characteristics of this CO2 laser. As a result, the maximum laser output power of 26[W] is obtained at the resonant frequency of about 13[kHz].

  • In this paper, the circuit of AC Choppers for $CO_2$laser Power Supply are proposed and investigated. IGBT-controlled ac voltage regulators, operating at high frequency chopping mode. Chopping-to-supply duty ratio plays an important role in terms of laser output. Laser input energy is varied by controlling the leakage transfomer used with the proposed system. This improved circuit employs a 3 electrode-type and Ring Blower. This improved circuit system has many advantages compared with the conventional SMPS such as simple design requirment, easy implementation, high reliability, low switching loss, and consequently high efficiency. As a result, the maximun output was 16W at duty-ratio of 92%, total gas mixture of $CO_2$: $N_2$: He = 1 : 9 : 15, total pressure of 15torr.

Co-located and space-shared multiple-input multiple-output antenna module and its applications in 12 × 12 multiple-input multiple-output systems

  • In this study, we developed a co-located and space-shared multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna module with a modular design and high integration level. The proposed antenna pair includes a half-wavelength loop antenna and a dipole-type antenna printed on the front and back sides of a compact modular board. Owing to their modal orthogonality, these two independent antenna elements are highly self-isolated and free of additional decoupling components, even though they are assembled at the same location and within the same space. Thus, the proposed antenna is attractive in 5G MIMO systems. Furthermore, the proposed co-located and space-shared MIMO antenna module was employed in a 5G smartphone to verify their radiation and diversity performances. A 12 × 12 MIMO antenna system was simulated and fabricated using the proposed module. Based on the results, the proposed module can be employed in large-scale MIMO antenna systems for current and future terminal devices owing to its high integration, compactness, simple implementation, and inherent isolation.

  • By employing Environmental Input-Output Table 2005, which has 76 intermediate sector and 21 energy sources, this paper analyses the flow of energy demand and $CO_2$ after estimating an induced $CO_2$ emissions from 76 industrial sectors. Index of $CO_2$ intensity($CO_2/GDP$) and other index of $CO_2$ intensity($CO_2/calory$) showed that final demand sector uses more high calory energy source. Intermediate sector used less environmental friendly energy source and emit more $CO_2$ at same calory. Industries those has high induced $CO_2$ emissions are Thermal Power($32.587CO_2-g/Won$), Cement($10.370CO_2-g/Won$), Road Transportation($7.255CO_2-g/Won$), Cokes and Other Coal Products($5.791CO_2-g/Won$), Steam and Hot water supply, Sewage, Sanitary services($4.575CO_2-g/Won$). It is shown that industry such as Iron and Steel which has low $CO_2$ intensity, high backward linkage effect and high forward linkage effect makes high induced $CO_2$ emissions. Environmental load and $CO_2$ emissions in overall economy will decrease when not high $CO_2$ intensity industry but also low $CO_2$ intensity industry makes lower $CO_2$ intensity.

Minimization of a CW CO2 Laser Output Ripple by using High Frequency Resonance Phenomena (고주파 공진현상을 이용한 CW CO2 레이저의 출력리플 최소화)

  • In a conventional DC power supply used for CO2 laser, the circuit elements such as a rectifier bridge, a current-limiting resistor, a high voltage switch, energy storage capacitors ans a high-voltage isolation transformer using high turn ratio are necessary. Consequently, those supplies are expensive and require a large space. Thus, laser resonator and power supply should be optimally designed. In this paper, we propose a new power supply using high frequency resonance phenomena for CW(Continuous wave) CO2 laser (maximum output of 23W with discharge length of 450mm). It consists of a transformer including leakage inductance, magnetizing inductance and half-bridge converter, a three-stage Cockcroft-Walton and PFC(Power factor correction) circuit. The output ripple voltage can be controlled the minimum of 0.24% under the high frequency switching of 231kHz. Furthermore, the output efficiency was improved to 16.4% and the laser output stability of about 5.6% was obtained in this laser system.

Effects of surface hardening by using $CO_2$ laser defocussed beam on the fatigue resistance of ductile irons ($CO_2$ 레이저 분산빔에 의한 표면경화가 구상흑연주철의 피로특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study has been performed to investigate into some effects of the output power and traverse speed of laser beam on the microstructures, hardness and fatigue resistance of the ductile iron surface-hardened by $CO_2$ laser defocussed beam. Optical micrographs have shown that with increasing the output power and decreasing the traverse speed, the martensite was coarsened and some retained austenite were appeared in ductile iron. The microstructures of hardening zone were composed of bull's eye and some nodular graphite dissolved structures by the effect of self quenching. Fatigue fracture characteristics of ductile iron have appeared in the high stress and low stress ranges. The fracture initiated at nodular graphites in the surface hardened layer due to the stress concentration caused by a notch effect. The interior graphite nodules were broken away or popped out during crack propagation. Fatigue test has shown that values of fatigue strength considerably increased with increasing output power at a given traverse speed.
