Leaching Property of Coal Fly Ash Using Water as the Solvent and Its Carbonation Performance (석탄 비산재의 물에 대한 침출 특성과 탄산화 성능에 관한 연구)

  • The present paper investigates the leaching property of coal fly ash (FA) using distilled water as solvent and its performance of mineral carbonation. The highest leaching efficiency is obtained at 100 min after leaching begins and the overall leaching efficiencies of Ca and Na via five consecutive leachings were calculated to be 25.37% and 7.40%, respectively. In addition, because $Ca(OH)_2$ produced during the leaching reacts with $SiO_2$ which is the major component of FA, the Pozzolanic reaction may occur and thus reduces leaching efficiency. Total carbonation capacity of FA by absorbing $CO_2$ into FA leachates is 6.08 mg $CO_2/g$ FA and the contribution of alkali substances such as Ca, Na, Mg and K to this value is calculated to be 5.19 mg $CO_2/g$ FA. Carbonation efficiencies of Ca and Na based on leachates are 85.62% and 77.70%, respectively. On the other hand, the ratios of Ca and Na in raw FA to participate in carbonation are calculated to be 9.04% and 5.26%, respectively.

  • This study is to develop a mobile type environmental radiation measurement system for emergency response or environmental radiation monitoring of local governments near nuclear facilities. A mobile radiation measurement system can monitor radiation by field beyond the spatial constraints of a fixed environmental radiation monitor. If installed in local government infrastructure such as public transportation, environmental radiation can be monitored without additional manpower and measurement work. In addition, it is designed to enable monitoring and measurement of radiation from low to high doses as well as the environment in preparation for radioactive disasters such as nuclear power plant accidents. It is expected that this system will be utilized not only in normal times but also in the event of a radiation accident to improve the disaster prevention capabilities of local governments.

  • V parahaemolyticus possessed an extracellular alkaline pretense activity during the stationary growth phase. Various factors such as nitrogen sources, the concentration of NaCl and metal ions were investigated for optimizing the production of alkaline pretense from V. parahaemolyticus ATCC 17802. Among the nitrogen sources tested skim milk showed the distinct increase of the activity and the activity was the highest at 2% in final concentration after 60 hours incubation. The addition of NaCl and metal ions did not increase the alkaline pretense activity. CoC$_2$, CuC1$_2$, and HgCl rather highly inhibited alkaline protease production.

  • This study investigates the mechanical properties and reaction products of activated slag pastes depending on gypsum presence and calcium carbonate addition in terms of compressive strength tests and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The chemicals of CaO and NaOH are used as activators with different two dosages. The reaction of CaO-activated slag without gypsum just accelerated by addition of calcium carbonate at early ages, but no improvement was observed at later ages. On the other hand, the mechanical properties of CaO-activated slag pastes with gypsum were improved with calcium carbonate, enhancing the stability of ettringite. The variation of mechanical properties of NaOH-activated slag pastes was negligible depending on calcium carbonate addition in case of no gypsum. The addition of calcium carbonate into NaOH-activated slag pastes with gypsum deteriorated its mechanical properties due to the ion competition between CO32- ions and SO32- ions, decreasing crystallinity of reaction products.

Lightweight Aggregate Bloating Mechanism of Clay/Incinerated Ash/Additive System (점토/소각재/첨가제계 인공 경량골재의 발포기구)

  • The influence of the incinerated ash and additives on glass phase formation of lightweight aggregate, weight-lightening, and the bloating mechanism was investigated. Clay was used as base materials and incinerated ash was added from 0 to 30wt%. The additives such as $Na_2CO_3,\;CaCo_3,\;K_2CO_3,\;MgCO_3$, and a little amount of waste oil were added to the mixed body. In clay/incinerated ash/additive system, it turned out that $CaCO_3\;and\;MgCO_3$ were the components for glass phase formation and $Na_2CO_3$ was the component for both glass phase formation and weight-lightening. The small addition of waste oil from 0.5wt% to 3.0wt% affect on the bloating of aggregate. Incinerated ash had a good effect on the glass phase controlling. The most effective condition controlling glass phase and bloating of aggregate was 10wt% incinerated ash, 2wt% waste oil at 1200$^{\circ}$C. The bloating mechanism of lightweight aggregate is as follows; 1) micro-crack formation caused by thermal-shock and gas generation from inside of aggregate, 2) volume expansion by glass phase formation on the aggregate surface and rapid gas bloating inside of aggregate, 3) densification after bloating.

  • The extracting conditions of alginates from sea tangle were evaluated by measuring water vapor permeability (WVP) and tensile properties of alginate film to obtain basic data of making an edible and biodegradable film. The alginates were extracted with $1\%,\;3\%$ and $5\%$ sodium carbonate ($Na_2CO_3$) for 1, 3, 5 and 10 hours, and the alginate film was made with various plasticizers. The higher concentration of $Na_2CO_3$ solution showed the lower viscosity and polymerization degree of alginate and the film prepared with alginates having low viscosity showed the higher WVP. The extracting hours had little effect on the WVP and the elongation of alginate film, but the polymerization degree of alginates directly affected the tensile strength of the film. The addition of sorbitol and polyethylene glycol as a plasticizer lowered the WVPs and the elongation of alginate film.

  • $(Na_{0.525}K_{0.4425}Li_{0.0375})(Nb_{0.9975}Sb_{0.065}Ta_{0.0375})O_3+0.3 wt%CoO$ ceramics were fabricated as a function of CuO addition by traditional solid state sintering process in order to develop excellent lead-free piezoelectric ceramics composition. The addition of CuO in the LNKNTS composition ceramics can effectively enhance the densification of the ceramics, resulting in the oxygen vacancies as hardening effect. The excellent piezoelectric properties of electromechanical coupling factor($k{\small}_P$) of 0.378, piezoelectric constant($d_{33}$) of 152 pC/N were obtained from the 1.0 mol% CuO doped LNKNTS ceramics sintered at $1,020^{\circ}C$ for 3 h.

Variation in Physicochemical Properties and Anaerobic Digestion Efficiency by Thermal-alkali Pre-treatment (THAP) Factors (열화학적 가수분해 영향인자에 따른 물리화학적 특성 변화 및 혐기성소화 효율 평가)

  • In this study, thermal-alkali pre-treatment (THAP) optimal condition and co-digestion efficiency with THAP of the mixture food waste and sewage sludge were evaluated for improving the performances of co-digestion for mixed food waste and sewage sludge. The optimal condition of THAP was evaluated for solubilization COD, CST(Capillary Suction Time), TTF(Time to Filter), and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) with THAP temperature and NaOH concentration. In addition, the co-digestion of mixed food waste and sewage sludge were evaluated using biochemical methane potential (BMP) test. The optimal THAP reaction temperature and NaOH concentration of food waste and sewage sludge were $140^{\circ}C$ and 60 meq/L to solubilization COD over 20%, CST and TTF under 60sec and VFAs concentration over 12,000 mg-COD/L, respectively. The optimal condition of co-digestion of mixed food waste and sewage sludge equal to THAP condition. Therefore, it was determined that the optimal condition of THAP reaction temperature and NaOH concentration for co-digestion of mixed food waste and sewage sludge were $140^{\circ}C$ and 60 meq/L, respectively.

Selective Leaching of $LiCoO_2$in an Oxalic Acid Solution (Oxalic acid용액에서 $LiCoO_2$의 선택침출)

  • In the leaching of $LiCoO_2$with a strong acid such as sulfuric and nitric acid, an additional step was needed to recover cobalt and lithium separately from spent lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The leaching of $LiCoO_2$in an oxalic acid solution was investigated to recover cobalt selectively using a low solubility of cobalt oxalate at low pH. Leaching efficiency of 95% of lithium and less than 1% of cobalt were obtained when pure $LiCoO_2$powder was leached in 3M oxalic acid at $80^{\circ}C$ and 50 g/L pulpdensity. Under the above leaching conditions, complete dissolution of lithium was accomplished with mere 0.25% of cobalt in the solution when the cathodic active material collected from spent LIBs was employed. The lithium in the leaching solution can be recovered as a form of carbonate or hydroxide depending on the addition of $Na_2$$CO_3$or LiOH.

  • A series of Pt-based ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalysts promoted with several alkali and alkaline earth metals were prepared by a wet impregnation method. We confirmed that the addition of Na to $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ could cause a change in the oxidation state of Pt through an electronegative gap between Pt and Na atom, and increase the ratio of the metallic Pt. The metallic Pt species made by adding an optimum Na content improved the adsorption of NO species on the catalyst surface and restrained the oxidation of $CH_4$ to $CO_2$. When molar ratio of Na/Pt was 4.0, the highest catalytic activity could be obtained.
