This study confirmed the effect of the Cu/CeO2-X catalyst on the CO oxidation activity at low temperature through the catalyst's structure and reaction characteristics. The catalyst was prepared by the wet impregnation method. Cu/CeO2_X catalysts were manufactured by loading Cu (active metal) using CeO2 (support) formed at different calcination temperatures (300-600 ℃). Manufactured Cu/CeO2_X catalysts were evaluated for the low-temperature activity of carbon monoxide. The Cu/CeO2_300 catalyst showed an activity of 90% at 125 ℃, but the activity gradually decreased as the calcination temperature of the CeO2-X and Cu/CeO2_600 catalysts showed an activity of 65% at 125 ℃. Raman, XRD, H2-TPR, and XPS analysis confirmed the physicochemical properties of the catalysts. Based on the XPS analysis, the lower the calcination temperature of the CeO2 was, the higher the unstable Ce3+ species (non-stoichiometric species) ratio became. The increased Ce3+ species formed a solid solution bond between Cu and CeO2-X, and it was confirmed by the change of the CeO2 peak in Raman analysis and the reduction peak of the solid solution structure in H2-TPR analysis. According to the result, the formation of the solid solution bond between Cu and Ce has been enhanced by the redox properties of the catalysts and by CO oxidation activity at low temperatures.

For the preferential oxidation of CO contained in the fuel of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), CuO-$CeO_2$ mixed oxide catalysts were prepared by the sol-gel and co-precipitation methods to replace noble metal catalysts. In the catalyst preparation by the sol-gel method, Cu/Ce ratio and hydrolysis ratio were changed. The catalytic activity of the prepared catalysts was compared with the catalytic activity of the noble metal catalyst($Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$). Among the catalysts prepared with different Cu/Ce ratios, the catalyst whose Cu/Ce ratio was 4:16 showed the highest CO conversion (90%) and selectivity (60%) at $150^{\circ}C$. As the hydrolysis ratio was increased in the catalyst preparation, surface area increased, and catalytic activity also increased. The highest CO conversions with the CuO-$CeO_2$ mixed oxide catalyst prepared by the co-precipitation method and the noble metal catalyst (1wt% $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$) were 82 and 81% at $150^{\circ}C$, respectively, whereas the highest CO conversion with the CuO-$CeO_2$ mixed oxide catalyst prepared by the sol-gel method was 90% at the same temperature. This indicates that the catalyst prepared by the sol-gel method shows higher catalytic activity than the catalysts prepared by the co-precipitation method and the noble metal catalyst. From the CO-TPD experiment, it was found that the catalyst having CO desorption peak at a lower temperature ($140^{\circ}C$) revealed higher catalytic activity.
CO oxidation and selective CO oxidation of $La_xCe_{1-x}Co_yCu_{1-y}O_{3-{\alpha}}$ perovskite(x=1, 0.9, 0.7. 0.5; y=1, 0.9, 0.7, 0.5) were investigated. For CO oxidation, catalytic activities were studied according to different preparation conditions such as pH and calcination temperature. The influence of the change of the $O_2$ concentration for selective CO oxidation was studied, too. The substitution of Ce for La improved the catalytic activity for CO oxidation and selective CO oxidation and best activity was observed for $La_{0.7}Ce_{0.3}CoO_3$ prepared at pH 11 and calcined at $600^{\circ}C$. The temperature of 90% CO conversion for CO oxidation using $La_{0.7}Ce_{0.3}CoO_3$ was $230^{\circ}C$. In contrast to the enhancement effect by Ce substitution, the partial substitution of Cu for Co in $LaCo_yCu_{1-y}O_{3-{\alpha}}$ decreased catalytic activities for CO oxidation reaction compared to that using $LaCoO_3$. For selective CO oxidation, the best CO conversion was 66% at $230^{\circ}C$ for $La_{0.7}Ce_{0.3}CoO_3$. The CO conversion of $La_{0.7}Ce_{0.3}CoO_3$ was greatly increased from 66% to 91% as increasing $O_2$ concentration from 1% to 2%.
The catalytic oxidation of CO has been investigated on $ZnCe_{1+y}O_2$ at temperatures from 300 to $500^{\circ}C$ under various P_{CO} and PO_2 conditions. The oxidation rates have been correlated with 1.5-order kinetics: first order with respect to CO and 0.5 order with respect to O2. CO appears to be absorbed essentially on the O lattice of $ZnCe_{1+y}O_2$ as a molecular species, while $O_2$ adsorbs on an O vacancy as an ionic species. The conductivity data show that CO adsorption contributes electron to the conduction band and the adsorption process of $O_2$ withdraws it from an O vacancy. The oxidation mechanism and the defect model of $ZnCe_{1+y}O_2$ are inferred at given temperature and $PO_2'$s from the agreement between the conductivities and kinetic data. It is suggested that CO absorption is the rate-controlling.

A series of Fe/CeO$_2$/Fe$_{75}$Co$_{25}$ tunnel junctions (Magnetic Tunnel Junction, MTJ) having CeO$_2$ barrier layers from 30 to 90$\AA$ in thickness were prepared by ion beam sputtering (IBS) method. In order to compare the properties of MTJs, Fe/Al oxide/Fe-Co tunnel junctions were also prepared. Some junctions with a CeO$_2$ barrier layer showed the ferromagnetic tunneling effect and the highest MR ratio at room temperature was 5%. The electric resistance of junctions with a CeO$_2$ barrier layer was higher that that of junctions with an Al oxide barrier. On the other hand, The interface analysis of the Fe/CeO$_2$ bilayer was conducted by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that CeO$_2$ was decomposed to Ce and $O_2$ during sputtering, and Fe was oxidized with these decomposed $O_2$ molecules. The reduction of both electric resistance and MR ratio may be associated with the decomposed Ce in the barrier layer.r.r.

The effect of Ce promotion over 1wt% $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalysts on the CO conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity was investigated in preferential CO oxidation (PrOx) to reduce the CO concentration less than 10 ppm in excess $H_2$ stream for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Ce-promoted 1wt% $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method and the loading amount of Pt was fixed at 1wt%. The content of Ce promoter which has excellent oxygen storage and transfer capability due to the redox property was adjusted from 0 to 1.5wt%. Ce-promoted 1wt% $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalysts exhibit high CO conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity at low temperatures below $150^{\circ}C$ due to the improvement of reducibility of surface PtOx species compared with the 1wt% $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalyst without Ce addition. When Ce content was more than 1wt%, the catalytic activity was decreased at over $160^{\circ}C$ in PrOx because of competitive $H_2$ oxidation. As a result, 0.5wt% Ce is optimal content not only to achieve high catalytic activity and good stability at low temperatures below $150^{\circ}C$ in the presence of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ but also to minimize the $H_2$ oxidation at high temperatures.
The effect of alloy compositions of the bond coating on the plasma sprayed-thermal barrier coatings was investigated. The performance of the coating composed of Rene80/NiCrAl/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$ and Rene80/CoNiCrAlY/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$was evaluated by isothermal and thermal cyclic test in an ambient atmosphere at 115$0^{\circ}C$. The failure of Rene80/NiCrAl/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$ coatings was occurred at the bond coating/ceramic coating interface while Rene80/CoNiCrAlY/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$ coating was failed at the substrate/bond coating interface after thermal cyclic test. The lifetime of Rene80/NiCrAl/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$coatings was longer than Rene80/CoNiCrAlY/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$coating. The oxidation rate of the NiCrAl bond coating examined by TGA was lower than CoNiCrAlY bond coatings. In summary, these results suggest that Rene80/CoNiCrAlY/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$system as thermal barrier coating be not suitable considering the durability of the coating layer for high temperature oxidation and thermal stress.
$Cu-Ce/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ based catalysts were prepared and tested for selective oxidation of CO in a $H_2$-rich stream(1% CO, 1% $O_2$, 60% $H_2$, $N_2$ as balance). The effects of Cu loading and weight ratio(=Cu/(Cu+Ce)) upon both activity and selectivity were investigated upon the change in temperatures, It was also examined how the activity and selectivity of catalysts were varied with the presence of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ in the reactant feed. Among the various Cu-Ce catalysts with different catalytic metal composition, Cu-Ce(4 : 16 wf%) /${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed the highest activity(>$T_{99}$) and selectivities(50-80%) under wide range of temperatures($175-220^{\circ}C$). However, in the Cu-Ce(4 : 16 wt%)/ ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, the presence of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ in the reactant feed decreased the activity and the maximum activity(>$T_{99}$) in terms of reaction temperature moved by about $25^{\circ}C$ toward higher temperature, the $T_{>99}$ window was seen between $210-230^{\circ}C$ (selectivity 50-75%). From $CO_2-/H_2O-TPD$, it can be concluded that the main cause for the decrease in catalytic activity may be attributed to the blockage of the active sites by competitive adsorption of water vapor and $CO_2$ with the reactant at low temperatures.

Scandia-stabilized zirconia co-doped with $CeO_2$ is a promising electrolyte for intermediate temperature SOFC, but still shows rapid degradation during a long-term operation. In this study, $CeO_2$ (1 mol%) as a stabilizer is partially substituted with lanthanum oxides ($M_2O_3$, M=Yb, Gd, Sm) to stabilize a cubic phase and thus durability in reducing atmosphere. 0.5M0.5Ce10ScSZ electrolytes were prepared by solid state reaction and sintered at $1450^{\circ}C$ for 10 h to produce dense ceramic specimens. With addition of the lanthanum oxide, 0.5M0.5Ce10ScSZ showed lower degradation rates than 1Ce10ScSZ. Since $Gd_2O_3$ showed the highest ionic conductivity among the co-dopants, an electrolyte-supported cell with 0.5Gd0.5Ce10ScSZ was prepared to compare its long-term performance with that of 1Ce10ScSZ-based cell. Maximum power density of 0.5Gd0.5Ce10ScSZ-based cell was degraded by about 2.3% after 250 h, which was much lower than 1Ce10ScSZ-based cell (4.2%).

The metallic nanoparticles (Pt, Au, Ag. Cu, etc.) supported on ceria-titania mixed oxide exhibit a high catalytic activity for the water gas shift reaction ($H_2O\;+\;CO\;{\leftrightarrow}\;H_2\;+\;CO_2$) and the CO oxidation ($O_2\;+\;2CO\;{\leftrightarrow}\;2CO_2$). It has been speculated that the high catalytic activity is related to the easy exchange of the oxidation states of ceria ($Ce^{3+}$ and $Ce^{4+}$) on titania, but very little is known about the ceria titanium interaction, the growth mode of metal on ceria titania complex, and the reaction mechanism. In this work, the growth of $CeO_x$ and Au/$CeO_x$ on rutile $TiO_2$(110) have been investigated by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), Photoelectron Spectroscopy (PES), and DFT calculation. In the $CeO_x/TiO_2$(110) systems, the titania substrate imposes on the ceria nanoparticles non-typical coordination modes, favoring a $Ce^{3+}$ oxidation state and enhancing their chemical activity. The deposition of metal on a $CeO_x/TiO_2$(110) substrate generates much smaller nanoparticles with an extremely high activity. We proposed a mechanism that there is a strong coupling of the chemical properties of the admetal and the mixed-metal oxide: The adsorption and dissociation of water probably take place on the oxide, CO adsorbs on the admetal nanoparticles, and all subsequent reaction steps occur at the oxide-admetal interface.
