  • This paper suggests new hydraulic circuit to control the pressure of clutches and brakes which has several advantages than conventional hydraulic circuit in automatic transmissions. In conventional hydraulic circuit, the pressures of all friction elements are controlled by only one pressure control valve and accumlators. So, controllable range is limited and it is unable to control the friction elements independently. Therefore, we can not do the fine control of timing between apply clutch and release clutch which is needed in clutch-to clutch shifting automatic transmissions. To overcome these faults, we designed the direct-acting hydraulic circuit where one pressure control valve and pressure control solenoid valve are allocated to each friction element and control that independently. Through this structural improvement of hydraulic circuit, we can achieve elaborate aontrol to clutch pressure. Specially, We can control the timing between apply clutch and release clutch delicately which is needed in clutch-to-clutch shifting.

  • In order to optimize an agricultural tractor clutch mechanism system, its structural static and kinematic mechanism were analyzed. The operating force of the mechanical tractor clutch system is currently not appropriate to drive comfortably. So it is needed to reduce the clutch operating force by applying advanced engineering design techniques. In the present study, an optimization technology is applied to the design of tractor clutch systems to reduce the operating force. As a result of the optimization using 2 link-angles and 1 link-length which are the main design variables of the clutch linkage system, the maximum pushing force of the maximum clutch pedal was found 182.8N, 14% decreased compared to the existing clutch system. The effectiveness of the optimum design is certified by menas of an experiment.

  • The wear properties of clutch facing materials with two different copper amounts were evaluated against the fly-wheel materials used in clutch system, such as gray cast iron and spheroidal graphite cast iron. Sliding wear tests were carried out for four different combinations with these clutch facing materials and flywheel materials at different speeds and applied loads. Results showed that the clutch facing material contained a higher copper amount had the better wear resistance. And using the gray cast iron as the counter material, clutch facing material resulted in the much lower wear rate, regardless of the copper amount. It is obvious that the wear properties of clutch facing material are influenced from the thermal conductivities of the clutch facing material and the counter material.

  • The clutch is a subcomponent of the transmission that is designed to engage and disengage power flow between the engine and the transmission. Recently, the engine power of automobile has been continuously increased because of customer's demand for the bigger one. As the engine power is increased, the vibration transmitted to the hydraulic clutch operating system has been increased. Therefore the demand for the reduction of clutch pedal vibration during the operation of the clutch system has been increased. This paper describes the pressure pulsation reduction characteristics of the damper cylinder which is applied to the hydraulic clutch operating system. And the purpose of this study is to confirm the availability of a simulation model and investigating the test results of hydraulic clutch operating system. The test results are compared with the simulation results. Therefore it may be concluded that the simulation model and test results will be very useful f3r the design of hydraulic clutch damper cylinder.

  • In this paper, dynamic characteristics of an AT clutch system were investigated considering the dynamics of check ball and hydraulic control valves. Dynamic model of a pressure control solenoid valve (PCSV) was obtained by Bondgraph and permeance method. Also, the clutch piston and check ball dynamics were modeled by considering the effect of centrifugal force of the oil entrapped in the clutch chamber. In order to validate the dynamic models obtained, plunger displacement of PCSV and pressure response of the clutch supply lines were compared with the available experimental data, which were in good accordance with the numerical results. Using the dynamic model of the clutch system, simulations were performed to investigate the effect of the rotational speed on the response of clutch cylinder pressure, clutch piston and check ball displacement, and oil flow rate into the cylinder and flow rate out of the check valve.

  • ER clutch is a device using ER fluid, so called "intelligent material" and is a controlled system with electric field strength. Currently, the temperature of ER fluid increases and affects the performance of ER clutch when ER clutch is operating. This study was undertaken to estimate this performance variation due to temperature rise of ER fluid. An analytic heat transfer model of concentric cylinder type ER clutch was developed and with this model, effects of changing geometric, kinetic parameters of ER clutch and ER fluid properties were described. In conclusion, compared with neglecting thermal effects, a performance of ER clutch was very differential and for uniform performance of ER clutch, we have to improve thermal stability of ER fluid. • Wet clutches in an automatic transmission enable the transmission of the engine power by the frictional torque experienced and noted between disk and plates. Since the clutch frictional torque considerably affects the shift quality of an automatic transmission as well as the durability of the machinery, its friction characteristics must be carefully examined to meet the design requirements. The SAE No. 2 friction test machine is a well-known standard to evaluate mainly the friction characteristics of plate clutches along with the required automatic transmission fluids. This paper reviews the experimental analysis of the wet clutch friction characteristics by using the exclusively developed clutch test machine which is capable of controlling the clutch test procedure, in accordance with the applicable test standard and processing of the experimental data automatically. As the clutch test machine is designed for the accommodation of dual clutches which is applied to the real transmission, it can evaluate not only the clutch friction characteristics, but also an actuation performance of a measured clutch piston. In respect to friction characteristics involving dynamic friction coefficients, the energy absorbed in a clutch disk and the recorded temperatures of clutch plates during braking actions and procedures are also investigated. Additionally, the change of friction coefficients by the use of the repeated clutch application is also observed with the endurance test functions of an accurately calibrated and dedicated clutch test machine.

  • As a shift control of automatic transmission was managed with the electronic control unit (ECU), shift quality which is a measure of shift shock during gear change has markedly improved. However, the initial clutch pressure control of the clutch filling phase should continue to rely on the predetermined control input since the input and output speeds are unchanged until the shifting process attains the inertia phase. It is critical to minimize the clutch response time and control the clutch pressure accurately at the end of clutch fill to achieve quick shift response and smoothness. Advanced transmission companies have adopted an auto calibration method which establishes the databases for the clutch piston fill-up attributes and the frictional characteristics of the disks. In this study, a distinctive auto calibration algorithm for forklift transmission under development is proposed and verified with the real-vehicle test. The experimental calibration results showed consistent turbine dynamics at the initial stage of shifts with the properly calibrated clutch-fill control parameters. By using this technique, it is necessary to finalize the shift control for the various operation conditions.
