  • Impulse buying has been considered a pervasive and distinctive phenomenon in the modern lifestyle and has been receiving increasing attention from consumer researchers and theorists. In the modern marketplace, spontaneous urges to buy and consume often compete with the practical necessity to delay the immediate gratification that purchasing provides. The purpose of this study is to conceptualize and test the framework of impulse buying behavior for fashion products using structural equation model. Data were obtained from 413 students attending universities during schedules classes in Busan. Analysis of the data, utilizing AMOS 4.1, supported most of the predictions. The results showed that situational variable(time available) and individual variable(fashion involvement) have direct effects on consumers' shopping emotions, including positive and negative emotion. Positive emotions had effects on all types of impulse buying(planned impulse buying, reminded impulse buying, and fashion-oriented impulse buying), while negative emotion affected two types of impulse buying(reminded impulse buying and fashion-oriented impulse buying). These emotional experiences influence impulse buying behaviors for fashion products serving as critical mediators. The findings suggest that time available and fashion involvement are good predictors mediated by shopping emotion to impulse buying behavior for fashion products. The implications of this research for future work on the shopping emotion and impulse buying behavior are discussed.

  • This study generated a framework to help academicians understand consumers' cultural values and global-mindedness Especially, this study affirmed the importance of fashion involvement in evoking global-mindedness when consumers have strong traditional values. A conceptual model with non-traditional and traditional values as exogenous variables, global-mindedness as endogenous variable and fashion involvement as mediating variable were created for the study. Data from 224 female college students were analyzed for empirical study. Results indicated that college students showed higher level of non-traditional values than traditional values. Non-traditional values had significant direct influence on global-mindedness whereas traditional values did not have significant influence. Traditional values as well as non-traditional had significant influence on fashion involvement. Fashion involvement significantly affected global-mindedness. Both non-traditional values and traditional values had significant positive indirect effects on global-mindedness mediated by fashion involvement.

All ads were evaluated and compared their cultural characteristics in terms of country, product involvement and usage, and magazine type. ANOVA, Duncan test, and Pearson correlation-coefficient were applied to analyze data. The results were shown as follows: First, most ads tended to be individual, less power oriented, feministic, and showed high tendency of uncertainty avoidance as well as long term confucianism for all the countries. And some cultural characteristics were different among countries. Japan, France, U. S. and Korea in order showed higher individualism and lower power distance. Also Korea and Japan showed relatively short term confucian culture while U. S. and France did ling term perspectives in the ads. Second, product involvement and usage type had a significant impact on the characteristics of individualism-collectivism and feminity-masculinity. That is, product ads of lower involvement and personal use were likely to show individualistic messages and to have more feministic appeals. Third, magazine type had an impact on some cultural characteristics. Womens magazines would have more individualistic, less power oriented, and feministic appeals of ads.
