  • This paper proposes a simple and intuitive model-free torque-tracking control for rotary electro-hydraulic actuators. The undesirable natural-velocity-feedback effect is discussed by introducing mechanical impedance into the electro-hydraulic actuation system. The proposed model-free torque control comprises inner- and outer-loop control to achieve two control objectives. Inner-loop control reduces the mechanical impedance passively and optimally. To improve the tracking accuracy, a certain form of proportional-integral-derivative control is applied to the outer loop. The robustness of the proposed closed-loop system against external disturbances is demonstrated by transforming the two-loop control structure into a disturbance observer form. The proposed method is validated on a single joint electro-hydraulic actuator.

  • In this study, a hierarchical switching control scheme based on robust control theory is proposed for tracking control of vehicle longitudinal acceleration in the presence of large uncertainties. A model set consisting of four multiplicative-uncertainty models is set up, and its corresponding controller set is designed by the LMI approach, which can ensures the robust performance of the closed loop system under arbitray switching. Based on the model set and the controller set, a switching index function by estimating the system gain of the uncertainties between the plant and the nominal model is designed to determine when and which controller should be switched into the closed loop. After theoretical analyses, experiments have also been carried out to validate the proposed control algorithm. The results show that the control system has good performance of robust stability and tracking ability in the presence of large uncertainties. The response time is smaller than 1.5s and the max tracking error is about $0.05\;m/S^2$ with the step input.

  • For a multi-input, multi-output system, it is widely known that feedback control gain presents extra freedom pole placement problem. An eigenstructure assignment utilizes this freedom for assignment of all or some elements of the closed-loop eigenvectors. In this paper, a nonlinear optimization technique is adopted to obtain a small gain controller that assigns closed-loop eigenvalues and elements of eigenvectors simultaneously. To illustrate the approach, a numerical example of the Airplane mode decoupling using an advanced fighter is shown.

  • This paper proposes an $H_{\infty}$ controller design method for Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems using a fuzzy basis-function-dependent Lyapunov function. Sufficient conditions for the guaranteed $H_{\infty}$ performance of the T-S fuzzy control system are given in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). These LMI conditions are further used for a convex optimization problem in which the $H_{\infty}-norm$ of the closed-loop system is to be minimized. To facilitate the basis-function-dependent Lyapunov function approach and thus improve the closed-loop system performance, additional decision variables are introduced in the optimization problem, which provide an additional degree-of-freedom and thus can enlarge the solution space of the problem. Numerical examples show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents a new algorithm for the closed-loop $H_{\infty}$ composite control of weakly coupled bilinear systems with time-varying parameter uncertainties and exogenous disturbance using the successive Galerkin approximation(SGA). By using weak coupling theory, the robust $H_{\infty}$ control can be obtained from two reduced-order robust $H_{\infty}$ control problems in parallel. The $H_{\infty}$ control theory guarantees robust closed-loop performance but the resulting problem is difficult to solve for uncertain bilinear systems. In order to overcome the difficulties inherent in the $H_{\infty}$ control problem, two $H_{\infty}$ control laws are constructed in terms of the approximated solution to two independent Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaac equations using the SGA method. One of the purposes of this paper is to design a closed-loop parallel robust $H_{\infty}$ control law for the weakly coupled bilinear systems with parameter uncertainties using the SGA method. The other is to reduce the computational complexity when the SGA method is applied to the high order systems.

  • Design of a reliable control systems is investigated for a class of uncertain linear plants. The uncertainty considered here is for the ase of uncertainty in the system matrix. A decentralized control scheme with two observer-based feedback controllers is developed, and it is shown that the resulting closed-loop system is reliable in the sense that the control scheme provides guaranteed stability and $H_{\infty}$-norm bounded performance in the event of sensor and/or actuator failures as well as in the presence of parameter uncertainties. We observed that soft-type failures were additional exogenous inputs to the closed-loop system. As a results, the sensor and/or actuator failures can be tolerated in the design, which is achieved by extending the methodology developed in.

  • Passive velocity field control (PVFC) was previously developed for fully mechanical systems, in which the motion task was specified by behaviors in terms of a velocity field and the closed-loop was passive with respect to the supply rate given by the environment input. However, the PVFC was only applied to a single manipulator. The proposed control law was derived geometrically and the geometric and robustness properties of the closed-loop system were also analyzed. In this paper, we propose a virtual passivity-based algorithm to apply decentralized control to multiple 3wheeled mobile robotic systems whose subsystems are under nonholonomic constraints and convey a common rigid object in a horizontal plain. Moreover, it is shown that multiple robot systems ensure stability and the velocities of augmented systems converge to a scaled multiple of each desired velocity field for cooperative mobile robot systems. Finally, the application of proposed virtual passivity-based decentralized algorithm via system augmentation is applied to trace a circle and the simulation results is presented in order to show effectiveness for the decentralized control algorithm proposed in this research.

  • A method is presented for generating the path which significantly reduces residual vibration of a flexible robot manipulator and applying control theory to track the desired path. The desired path is optimally designed so that the system completes the required move with minimum residual vibration. A closed loop control theory is applied to track the planned path in the case of load variation. Specifically, it is desired that the optimally designed path has a better trajectory tracking capabilities during the residual vibration over the cycloidal path, in various cases of load. Perturbation adaptive control is used as closed loop control scheme. A planar two link manipulator is used to evaluate this method.

  • The aerodynamic torque and power caused by the interaction between the wind and blade of wind turbine are highly nonlinear. For this reason, the overall dynamic behaviors of wind turbine have nonlinear characteristics. The aerodynamic nonlinearity also affects properties of torque control for wind turbine. In this paper, the nonlinear aerodynamic property according to the wind speed below rated power and its effects on the torque control system are investigated. Nonlinear parameter representing change of aerodynamic torque with respect to rotor speed is obtained by linearization technique. Effects of this aerodynamic nonlinear parameter on the closed-loop torque system with PI controller for an 1.5 MW wind turbine are presented.

  • Since the behavior of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is influenced by disturbances and moments that are not accurately known, the depth control law of AUVs must have the ability to track the input signal and to reject disturbances simultaneously. Here, we proposed robust tracking control for controlling the depth of an AUV. An augmented closed-loop system is represented by an error dynamic equation, and we can easily show the asymptotic stability of the overall system by using a Lyapunov function. The robust tracking controller is consisted of the internal model of the command signal and a state feedback controller, and it has the ability to track the input signal and reject disturbances. The closed-loop control system is robust to parameter uncertainties. Simulation results showed the control performance of the robust tracking controller to be better than that of a P + PD controller.
