Background: Bone subtraction computed tomography angiography (BSCTA) is a useful alternative technique for improving visualization of vessels surrounded by skull bone. However, no studies have compared computed tomography angiography (CTA) and BSCTA for improving the visibility of canine cerebral blood vessels. Objectives: To evaluate the potential benefit of BSCTA for better delineation of brain arteries of the circle of Willis (CoW) in dogs by comparing BSCTA with non-subtraction computed tomography angiography (NSCTA). Methods: Brain CTA was performed for nine healthy beagle dogs using a bolus tracking method with saline flushing. A total dose of 600 mgI/kg of contrast agent with an iodine content of 370 mgI/mL was injected at a rate of 4 ml/s. Bone removal was achieved automatically by subtracting non-enhanced computed tomography (CT) data from contrast CT data. Five main intracranial arteries of the CoW were analyzed and graded on a scale of five for qualitative evaluation. Results: Scores of basilar artery, middle cerebral artery, and rostral cerebral artery in the BSCTA group were significantly higher than those in the NSCTA group (p = 0.001, p = 0.020, and p < 0.0001, respectively). Scores of rostral cerebellar artery (RcA) and caudal cerebral artery (CCA) did not differ significantly between the two groups. However, scores of RcA and CCA in the BSCTA group were higher than those in the NSCTA group. Conclusions: BSCTA improved visualization of intracranial arteries of the CoW with close contact to bone. Thus, it should be recommended as a routine scan method in dogs suspected of having brain vessel disease.
Studies on molecular plasticity of Bermann glia (BG) after harmaline-induced Purkinje cell (PC) degeneration in the rat cerebellum. The intimate structural relationship between BG and PC, evidenced by the sheathing of the PC dendrites by veil-like process from the BG has been suggestive of the close functional relationship between these two cell types. However, little is known about metabolic couplings between these cells. This study designed to investigate molecular plasticity of BG in the rat cerebellum in which PCs were chemically ablated by harmaline treatment. Immunohistochemical examination reveals that harmaline induced PC degeneration causes a marked glial reaction in the cerebellum with activated BG and microglia aligned in parasagittal stripes within the vermis. In these strips, activated BG were associated with upregulaion of metallotheionein, while GLAST and was down regulated, as compared with nearby intact area where both BG are in contact with PCs. The data from this study demonstrate that BG can change their phenotypic expression when BG loose their contact with PCs. It is conceivable that activated BG may upregulate structural proteins, metallothionein expression to use for their proliferation and hypertrophy; metallothionein expression to cope with oxidative stress induced by PC degeneration and microglial activation. On the contrary, BG may down regulated expression of GLAST because sustained loss of contact with PCs would eliminate the necessity for the cellular machinery involved glutamate metabolism. In conclusion, BG might respond man to death of PCs by undergoing a change in metabolic state. It seems possible that signaling molecules released from PCs regulates the phenotype expression of BG. Also ultrastructures in the organelles of normal PC and BG are distinguished by mitochondrial appearance, and distributed vesicles at the synaptic area in the cytoplasm.

The heartwood of cengal (Neobalanocarpus heimii) is known to have a high degree of decay resistance by virtue of its high extractive content. After 30 years in ground contact an utility pole of this tropical hardwood was found to be degraded only in the surface layers by cavity-forming soft rot fungi. The present work was undertaken 1) to characterize the degradation of cengal heartwood from the aspect of ultrastructure and chemistry and 2) to investigate the correlation between soft rot decay and its extractive microdistribution in wood tissues. The chemical analysis of cengal heartwood revealed the presence of a high amount of extractives as well as lignin. The wood contained a relatively high amount of condensed lignin and the guaiacyl units. Microscopic observations revealed that vessels, fibers and parenchyma cells (both ray and axial parenchyma) all contained extractives in their lumina, but in variable amounts. The lumina of fibers and most axial parenchyma were completely or almost completely filled with the extractives. TEM micrographs showed that cell walls were also impregnated with extractives and that pit membranes connecting parenchyma cells were well coated and impregnated with extractives. However, fungal hyphae were present in the extractive masses localized in cell lumina, and indications were that the extractives did not completely inhibit fungal growth. The extent of cell wall degradation varied with tissue types. The fibers appeared to be more susceptible to decay than vessels and parenchyma. Middle lamella was the only cell wall region which remained intact in all cell types which were severely degraded. The microscopic observations suggested a close correlation between extractive microdistribution and the pattern and extent of cell wall degradation. In addition to the toxicity to fungi, the physical constraint of the extractive material present in cengal heartwood cells is likely to have a profound effect on the growth and path of invasion of colonizing fungi, thus conferring protection to wood by restricting fungal entry into cell walls. The presence of relatively high amount of condensed lignin is also likely to be a factor in the resistance of cengal heartwood to soft rot decay.
The number of thyroid diseases treated with radioiodine(I-131) is increasing steadily. The sharp increase in patients who require high dose radioiodine therapy greatly increased the need for new therapy rooms. Accordingly, interest in radiation exposure is rising as well, and is a major psychological stress factor for the patient and those who come in close contact with the patient. This study aimed to minimize the radiation exposure on discharge. Based on various previous reports, the decision for discharge should be individualized depending on many factors related to the patient's living or working environment. Educating patients repeatedly on the importance of sufficient oral hydration, while the adequate amount was relative to the patient's individual condition, greatly lowered the detected radiation measurement within the same admission period. In some cases, the period of admission could be abbreviated.
Hospitals accomodate patients who have a high risk of infection due to reduced immunity as well as people who require surgical, medical or other treatments. Consequently, the role of clinical nurses, who come into close contact with these patients is very important in the control of nosocomial infection. This study was done to investigate and compare the level of perception of the importance of the control of nosocomial infections as well as the level of actual performance, and the level of satisfaction with the control of nosocomial infection by the clinical nurses. Thus, the purpose of this study is to contribute basic data for improving policies and educational programs to control nosocomial infection. A summary of the survey results is as follows. 1) The means of scores on all categories of the inquiry were 4. 51 for awareness 4.42 for actual performance, and 3.20 for satisfaction, of a possible high score of 5.00. 2) Correlations of the level of perception of importance between characteristics of nurses and hospital control of nosocomial infection differed significantly according to the type of hospital establishment type (p=.005), age(p=.000), career(p=.000), position (p=.002), and regular conferences on infection control in working departments(p=.003), Correlation of the level of actual performance between characteristics of nurses and hospital control of nosocomial infection diffesed significantly according to type of hospital(p=.000), hospital size (p=.009), working department(p=.000), age(p=.000), career (p=.000), school career(p=.040), position (p=.000), education experience on nosocomial infection(p=.020), and regular conferences on infection control in working department(p=.000). Correlation of degree of satisfaction between characteristics of nurses and hospital control of nosocomial infection also differed significantly according to the type of hospital establishment (p=.003), working department(p=.000), age (p=.000), and regular conferences on infection control in working department (p=.000). 3) Correlation between clinical nurses, level of perception of importance and actual level of performance for the control of nosocomial infection was relatively positive (r=.57, p=.000). Correlation between clinical nurses degree of satisfaction and level of actual performance for control of nosocomial infection was relatively positive (r=.47, p=.000). Correlation between clinical nurses, level of perception of importance and degree of satisfaction degree with the control of nosocomial infection was also relatively positive (r=.27, p=.000).

Experimental study on characteristics of direct contact condensation of steam discharged into a sub-cooled water pool has been performed using five different sizes of horizontal nozzle over a wide range of steam mass fluxes and pool temperatures. Steam condensation phenomena have been observed visually and by taking pictures of steam jets using a high speed video camera. Two different steam jet shapes such as ellipsoidal shape and conical shape were typically observed for a stable steam jet, depending on the steam mass flux and pool temperature. The steam jet expansion ratio and the steam jet length as well as the condensation heat transfer coefficients were determined. The effect of steam mass flux, pool temperature, and nozzle diameter on these parameters were also discussed. Empirical correlations for the steam jet lengths and the condensation heat transfer coefficients as a function of steam mass flux and condensation driving potential were established. The axial and radial temperature distributions in steam jet and in surrounding water were measured. The effect of steam mass flux, pool temperature, and nozzle diameter were also discussed. The condensation regime map, which consists of six regimes such as chugging, transient chugging, condensation oscillation, stable condensation, bubble condensation oscillation, and intermittent oscillation condensation, were established. In addition, the dynamic pressures at the pool wall were measured. The close relation of dynamic pressure and steam condensation mode, which is also dependent on steam mass flux and pool temperature, was found.
In spite of the fact that the Okcheon system has been rather intensively studied by many geologists since 1945, it still remains as a controversal problem as to its stratigraphy and geologic age. Present study has mainly focused on the upper members of the Okcheon system, namely the Hwanggangri and the Kunjasan formations so as to clarify the lithology, the depositional environment and the tectonic evolution of the formations. The Kunjasan formation lying unconformably over the Hwanggangri formation which is supposed to be a meta-tillite is interpreted as a metamorphosed calcareous argillaceous and/or arenaceous sediments on contract to the idea postulated by some geologists that it was a derivative of silicified Hwanggangri formation. Lithology of the Kunjasan and the Hwanggangri formation is quite different in that the former is white in color, contains few pebbles, and mostly composed of diopside and detrital quartz, whereas the latter is black to dark in color, contains abundant and variable kinds of pebbles, and composed of more argillacous matrix that has been metamorphosed to hornfels. The Hwanggangri and the Kunjasan formations were deposited in the rather deep sea which has transgressed toward northeast from southwest in the late Precambrian time, and the writer (1970) had formerly designated it as Okcheon Paleogeosyncline. With the beginning of Paleozoic era, Okcheon neogeogyncline was formed to the northeast of the old paleogeogyncline area. The transgression of the sea had proceeded toward southwest in which Cambrian strata were accumulated. During this period the area occupied formerly by the paleogeosyncline was uplifted, so that most of the Hwanggangri and the Kunjasan formations were eroded away except in the area close to the neogeosyncline sea coast. This is the reason why the Hwanggangri and the Kunjasan formations are cropped out presently in the area of the vicinity of contact zone of the paleo- and neogeosyncline zones. The age of the Okcheon system has been reconfirmed to be Precambrian from the view of the facts that 1) the Hanggangri formation, the upper member of the Okcheon system is meta-tillite and correlated to the Precambrian tillite in the Yantze basin in China, 2) the Okcheon system has been moderately metamorphosed while other formations of the same age, if it is Paleozoic or later, have not been metamorphosed, and 3) tectonic history and limited areal distribution of the Hwanggangri and the Kunjasan formations is suggestive of Precambian age.

This study set out to identify problems with amphibian habitation by the wetland types and improve their habitation environment in urban forest wetlands, thus creating a habitat for amphibians. Study site include forest swamps in Jatjul Park as well as Yeoji neighborhood Park in Guro-gu, and in Choansan neighborhood Park in Dobong-gu. The forest swamp in Jatjul Park gets its water from Mt. Maebong and it is a former escalated farmland-turned wetland. The swamp area is $2,500m^2$, a forest zone and a landscape planting site are 83.27% and 6.70% each. Target species Seoul pond frogs are inseparable from rice fields because they live in a short radius of and lay eggs in or near paddy fields, and Rana nigromaculata have similarities with Rana plancyi chosenica in choosing their habitats. There was need for paths that would lead to other paths so amphibians would spread to other parts of the forest and for measures to secure open water. Modifying a variety of routes for water, human and animals along with building a buffer to keep the core habitation zones were required. The forest swamp in Yeonji neighborhood Park used to be a water reservoir on the foot of Mt. Gunji. The swamp area is $1,980m^2$, a forest zone and farmland account for 80.61% and 4.88% each. Non-point pollutants from upstream along run into the subject forest marsh, bare ground on the around swamp and steep stone embankments obstructed amphibians. Target species was Bufo gargarizans that live in forests and edges of hills and spawn in deep water. The forest swamp in Choansan neighborhood Park gets its water from Mt. Choan and it is close to its water source that it is a mountain stream forest wetland. The basin and the swamp are $35,240m^2$ and $250m^2$ in size respectively. A forest zone accounts for 90.20%, high stone embankments laid in refurbishing the valley obstruct amphibians and there is water shortage in times of droughts. Target species were Rana coreana, Rana dybowskii and Hynobius leechii that live in mountain valleys, streams and wetlands and lay eggs in forest marshes and rocks in valleys. Looking into the three swamps of amphibian habitation, I came to conclusions that those wetlands were suitable for their amphibians but man-made facilities blocked their corridors leading to other corridors and even killed off target species in some parts of those swamps by destroying those parts. Amphibians live in water, on ground and underground at different stages of life. Hence, we should take this fact into consideration when planning their habitats and design core habitation zones, buffers zone and use zones accordingly. Buffer zones ought to be between core habitation zones and surrounding trees. Aiming at protecting core habitation zones, buffers should be in harmony with habitation zones. Use zones should be minimized in size and not in direct contact with core habitation zones.
Purpose: To understand the status and actual condition of clinical practice in ophthalmic optics and offer a effective operation plan and improvement of quality of clinical practice. Methods: The school survey were investigated from 30 ophthalmic optics school and student survey were investigated from 161 students among these 4 schools. Results: 'No specific program for clinical practice' were 60.7%. Most schools apply clinical practice to credit (96.4%) but naming of subject and credit were varied in each school. 'Communication skill' was most difficult task and 'cleaning and arrangement of frame and stuff' were major task to students during clinical practice. Best benefits through clinical practice was 'knowing real status of optical business'. Comparison in carrier preference, optical shop and spectacles/contact lens company were decreased and eye hospital and norelation work were increased after clinical practice. Conclusions: Wide study on effective operation plan for clinical practice in ophthalmic optics and on the improvement of students' satisfaction and close cooperation and interest were needed between schools and clinical practice places.
Purpose: To study on the confidence of dry eye diagnosis methods which need to prescribe contact lens. Methods: Non-invasive tear film break-up time (NIBUT) and tear film break-up time (TBUT) were measured in forty healthy subjects in their 20s, and then the subjects were classified into normal eye and dry eye. The results of McMonnies questionnaire, tear prism height measurement, Hardtack test, blink rate measurement and Schirmer test were compared with the results of NIBUT and TBUT. Results: The results of NIBUT and TBUT were as follows; 20 subjects had normal eyes, 10 subjects had dry eyes in both NIBUT and TBUT, and 10 subjects showed different results. In McMonnies questionnaire, the score of normal eye group averaged 8.2 and that of dry eye group averaged 18.5, which showed statistically significant difference. Furthermore, 100% of normal eye group classified by the results of NIBUT and TBUT corresponded with the result of McMonnies questionnaire and 90% of dry eye group showed the correspondence. Tear prism height of normal eye group averaged 0.32 mm and that of dry eye group averaged 0.23 mm, which were significantly different. Hardtack test, blink rate measurement and Schirmer test without local anesthesia showed no statistically significant difference between normal eye group and dry eye group. Conclusions: On dry eye diagnosis methods, the results of McMonnies questionnaire and tear prism height measurement had close correlation with the results of NIBUT and TBUT.
