The aim was to provide data necessary to improve the clinical practice environment and promote professionalism in dental hygiene. Methods: A survey was conducted in August 2023 among dental hygiene students from five randomly selected universities in the metropolitan area. Data analysis methods included t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The main influencing factors of dental hygiene professionalism were the quality of instruction in the clinical practice, opportunities for learning, preparedness for students, and satisfaction with the practice institution (p<0.05). There was a significant positive correlation between the clinical practice environment and all sub-items of dental hygiene professionalism (p<0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study emphasize that the choice of practice institution is very important to enhance dental hygiene professionalism, and close collaboration between universities and practice institutions is highlighted to improve the quality of clinical practice guidance and opportunities for participation.

  • Purpose: This study explores the moral distress that nursing students experience during their clinical practice in Korea. Methods: Data were collected using focus group interviews, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Participants were recruited from three nursing schools in three different cities; each focus group interview lasted between one to two hours. Results: Twenty-two nursing students with more than one year of clinical practice experience participated. Three categories and ten themes were extracted. The following situational categories: "unprotected patients' right and dignity," "clinical settings in which standards of care are not upheld," "disrespectful hospital culture," and "inconsistent and unsystematic clinical education" caused moral distress. Types of responses to moral distress included: "shock and confusion over the gap between reality and moral standards," "powerlessness when cannot advocate patients," "fear and doubts about nursing career," and "moral desensitization and disappointment in oneself." "Expressions of moral distress and the need for advice" and "a search for meaning and hope" were identified as coping strategies. Conclusion: These results demonstrate the need for systematic clinical practicum and education programs to minimize moral distress. These programs may offer opportunities for students to turn moral distress into opportunities for learning and growth in the future.

  • This study aimed to identify academic stress factors of nursing students who have experienced COVID-19. The subjects of this study were 172 nursing students from three universities in Gyeongsangnam-do. Data were collected at November 2022 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, Hierarchical regression by SPSS/WIN 21.0. As a result of the study, the degree of academic stress 2.09 points and the factors affecting nursing students' academic stress were major satisfaction, satisfaction with alternative clinical practicum, emotion-focused coping, problem-focused coping, self-efficacy, perceived health status, and depression due to COVID-19, and the total explanatory power was 62.3%. Based on these research results, we need to prepare a systematic education plan to reduce the academic stress of nursing students in future disasters and infectious diseases by preparing measures to increase nursing students' major satisfaction and satisfaction with alternative clinical practicum.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the importance and usability of the curriculum of the oriental nursing educational program among clinical nurses who completed the program. Methods: The study employed a cross-sectional descriptive survey design. Data were collected from March 1, 2010 to April 25, 2010 from 68 oriental or allied hospital nurses who completed the oriental nursing educational program. A70-item questionnaire of importance and usability of the program curriculum and as an instrument of knowledge of oriental nursing were used. Data were analyzed by SPSS 18.0 program. Results: The majority of participants (69.1%) experienced difficulties in clinical practice due to lack of oriental nursing knowledge and skill. In knowledge of oriental nursing, meridian points had the most negative responses (51.5%), followed by oriental documentation (42.7%) and oriental herbal medicine (20.6%). The highest ranked course in importance was oriental fundamental nursing with clinical practicum in usability. The scores of usability items were significantly lower than those of importance items. Conclusion: This study suggests that the clinical job description and role of oriental nurses should be organized. The oriental nursing educational program needs to include more unique clinical nursing content.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify experiences of nurses who served as preceptors in clinical education for senior student nurses in a college of medicine in Wonju city. Method: Data was collected from 20 preceptors instructing senior student nurses in 2001 using a self-completion questionnaire. To analyze data, content analysis was done using an analysis scheme developed by the investigators. Result: The analysis scheme consisted of 7 categories and 25 subcategories. 135 significant statements were analyzed and categorized. Preceptors indicated that they were role models, socialization facilitators and educators while instructing students in the clinical practicum. In performing the preceptors' role, preceptors reported that their most important change was self-enhancement, and positive experience was a constructive work atmosphere. The most important factor facilitating the preceptors' role performance was support from head nurses, and the most discouraging factor was work loads. Conclusion: This study suggests that interventions for encouragement and socialization of preceptors should be developed to promote clinical education for senior student nurses.

  • This study is a one-group pre-post experimental design that investigates the effects of a practice-based learning program with multiple components on the clinical competence of nursing students, and clinical decision-making. From May 4 to 29, 2020, a total of 60 third-year nursing students with no clinical practice experience were divided into two teams and participated in multi-component practice-based education for two weeks each, and the data of the final 51 students were included in the analysis. Following the practicum, there was a significant increase in clinical competence (t=-4.74, p<.001) and self-confidence in clinical decision-making (t=-8.41, p<.001), and a decrease in anxiety related to clinical decision-making (t=2.54, p=.014). The findings suggest that a multi-component, practice-based learning approach for nursing students can enhance their clinical competence, reduce preclincal anxiety and increase confidence in clinical decision-making in patient care.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a newly developed Introduction to Clinical Nursing (ICN) program on critical thinking skills, communication competence, self-efficacy, and clinical performance self-confidence in nursing students in their third year. Methods: One group pre-test and post-test design was used with three data collection time points (pre-test, post-test1 and post-test2). Participants were 74 third year nursing students approaching their first clinical practicum. The new program included (a) simulated clinical encounters regarding situations of assessing hospitalized patents and caring for patients with oxygenation needs, (b) objective structured clinical examination of skills, (c) lectures, and (e) field trips. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests. Results: After the ICN course, critical thinking skills(significant only between pretest and post-test2), communication competence, and clinical performance self-confidence improved significantly (p<.05). There was no improvement in the self-efficacy total score but there was significant improvement in the subscale, self-regulatory efficacy. Conclusions: The study results indicate that the ICN course may be effective in increasing critical thinking skills, communication competence, and clinical performance self-confidence in nursing students. However, the effect size was very small and modifications of this program should be considered to develop more cost-effective educational programs.
