Background: This study aimed to examine the factors that influence clinical performance of dental hygiene students to provide useful data for developing strategies to improve clinical competence. Methods: The effects of variables on clinical competence by quantile level were analyzed using quantile regression analysis in 247 dental hygiene students. Quantile regression and multiple regression analyses were conducted using the Stata 11.0 program to analyze predictors of clinical competence. Results: The clinical competence score of dental hygiene students was 42.69±5.90, the satisfaction of clinical practice was 49.90±7.44, the clinical practice stress was 50.62±7.37, and the professional self-concept was 31.68±4.41. Empathy was the highest at 50.87±4.93. Multiple regression analysis showed that school year, stress from clinical training, satisfaction with clinical training, professional self-concept, and empathy had significant impact on clinical competence. Quantile regression analysis showed that the effects varied depending on the clinical competence level. School year and professional self-concept had a significant positive effect, regardless of the clinical competence level, while empathy had a significant positive effect at the top 10% (Q90) of the clinical competence level. Satisfaction with clinical practice affected clinical competence at Q25, Q50, and Q90. Stress from clinical practice had significant effects at Q25, Q50, and Q90 (p<0.05). Conclusion: According to the study results, different factors affected clinical competence according to the quantile of clinical competence. This study provides valuable implications for designing clinical competence enhancement programs and strategies. In addition, objective indicators for considering factors that may affect the clinical competence, such as academic competence and satisfaction of practice hospitals, are expected to require detailed analysis and measures.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the belief in evidence-based practice, awareness of importance and performance of intravenous infusion and pressure ulcer evidence-based practice guidelines among nurses in a tertiary general hospital. Methods: The subjects of this study were 217 nurses working in a tertiary general hospital. Data collection was performed between February 11 and February 25, 2022. Data analysis was conducted descriptive statistics, t-test, hierarchical regression analysis, and Importance-Performance Analysis. Results: The mean score of belief for evidence-based practice among novice nurses was 3.34 out of 5, while preceptor nurses scored a mean of 3.41 out of 5. There was no significant difference in belief scores between novice nurses and preceptor nurses (t=-1.21, p=.227). The factors influencing the performance of evidence-based practice guidelines for intravenous infusion were belief in evidence-based practice (β=.14, p=.009) and importance of intravenous infusion (β=.51, p<.001), and the factors influencing the performance of evidence-based practice guidelines for pressure ulcer were belief in evidence-based practice (β=.15, p=.002) and importance of pressure ulcer (β=.65, p<.001). Importance-Performance Analysis of the evidence-based practice guidelines of two groups were used to identify common and different items. Conclusion: To improve the performance of evidence-based practice guidelines, it is necessary to enhance the evidence-based practice belief and importance of evidence-based practice guidelines. In particular, evidence-based practice should be provided to improve nursing quality through education on items of low-importance and low-performance and items of high-importance but low-performance guidelines identified through Importance-Performance Analysis.
This study is a descriptive research study to grasp the critical thinking tendency, clinical practice stress, core basic nursing confidence, and degree of adaptation to clinical practice in nursing students. From June to July 2019, 207 students in the fourth year of nursing college were surveyed through their own questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression analysis using SPSS/WIN v24.0. The negative correlation between clinical practice stress and critical thinking tendency(r=-.18, p=.010). The core self-confidence practice self-confidence showed a positive correlation with critical thinking tendency(r=.25, p<.001), and a negative correlation with clinical practice stress(r=-.17, p=.017). Adaptation to clinical practice showed a positive correlation with clinical practice stress(r=.44, p<.001), and the factor influencing clinical practice adaptation was stress(β=.40) (F=18.34, p<.001), and the explanatory power was about 23.1%. As mentioned above, stress brings a positive change to clinical practice, so it is necessary to identify stress factors received from clinical practice of nursing college students and reflect them in curriculum development.
