The samples of this research were eighty fresh-man students of Dong San Junior College of Nursing. Of them thirty-eight were experimental group and remaining forty-two were control group. This study has been conducted from October 14 to 22, 1985. Subjects in all two groups had measured their trait anxiety, after then, the researcher carried out Byun's relaxation technique with experimental group every other day After the experimental period, subjects in all two groups had measured their state anxiety. The tools of this study were two kinds: Spielberg, Gorsuch & Lushene's STAI, and Byun's relaxation technique. To test the statistical difference in the subjects' trait anxiety, score of lecture in pre-clinical practice and score of practice pre-clinical practice, t-test was performed. To verify the hypotheses, ANCOVA was performed. Results of this study were as follows: The main hypothesis that the nursing students who use relaxation technique will have less degree of anxiety in the first clinical practice than the nursing students who don't use relaxation technique was accepted (P<.005). Conclusively, the researcher thinks that it is necessary that nursing students were prepared with relaxation technique to reduce anxiety in their first clinical practice.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of a simulation-based practice on clinical performance and problem solving processes for nursing students. Method: The study used a one group pre-post test design. Students experienced a simulation-based practice that included team base learning, skill training, taking a high-fidelity simulation with SimMan 3G, and also being debriefed for 12 weeks (August 2010 to December 2010). The pre-test and post-test were conducted to compare the differences in knowledge, clinical nursing skills, and problem solving processes. Result: After students had received the simulation-based practice, they showed statistically significant higher knowledge (t=14.73, p<.001) and clinical nursing skills (t=15.47, p<.001) than before. However, there was no significant difference in the problem solving process score (t=1.53, p=.127). Conclusion: This study showed that knowledge and clinical nursing skills were significantly improved by the simulation-based practice. Further research would be required to identify how the problem solving process that uses simulation-based practice could be developed further.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate nurses readiness to self-directed learning and its correlations with nursing practice competence in a tertiary hospital in Seoul, Korea. Methods: A cross sectional survey design was utilized to assess nurses readiness to self-directed learning and job performance. The data used in this study were obtained from 286 nurses who have been working on general ward for over 1 year. Data were analyzed by ANOVA, t-test, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression using SAS 9.1 program. Results: The mean score of the readiness to self-directed learning is 3.56 and that of nursing practice competence is 2.71. The readiness to self-directed learning was statistically different according to level of education, and clinical work experience. Nursing practice competence was also significantly different according to level of education, clinical work experience, marital status, age, and working division. The readiness to self-directed learning and nursing practice competence seem to have significant positive correlation to each other (r=.555, p<.001). The readiness to self-directed learning explains 32.0% of nursing practice competence (F=20.20, p<.001). Conclusion: These findings indicate that program development for enhancing the readiness to self-directed learning is needed to improve nursing practice competence. We also need continuous efforts to improve nurses initiatives and creativity.
