  • Pipes operating in the seawater environment faces cavitation degradation and corrosion of the metallic component, as well as a negative synergistic effect. Cavitation degradation shows the mechanism by which materials deteriorate by causing rapid change of pressure or high-frequency vibration in the solution, and introducing the formation and explosion of bubbles. In order to rate the cavitation resistance of materials, constant conditions have been used. However, while a dynamic cavitation condition can be generated in a real system, there has been little reported on the effect of ultrasonic amplitude on the cavitation resistance and mechanism of composites. In this work, 3 kinds of epoxy coatings were used, and the cavitation resistance of the epoxy coatings was evaluated in 3.5% NaCl at 15 ℃ using an indirect ultrasonic cavitation method. Eleven kinds of mechanical properties were obtained, namely compressive strength, flexural strength and modulus, tensile strength and elongation, Shore D hardness, water absorptivity, impact test, wear test for coating only and pull-off strength for epoxy coating/carbon steel or epoxy coating/rubber/carbon steel. The cavitation erosion mechanism of epoxy coatings was discussed on the basis of the mechanical properties and the effect of ultrasonic amplitude on the degradation of coatings.

  • 26 multi-regional water treatment plants (WTPs) were investigated, to determine the characteristics of manganese (Mn) concentration and removal in Korea. Mn concentrations of raw water in most WTPs were higher than the drinking water standard (i.e., 0.05 mg/L); thus, proper removal of Mn at the WTPs is needed. Mn concentration was generally higher in lakes than rivers due to seasonal lake turnovers. The Mn concentrations of treated water at 26 WTPs in 2012 were less than 0.05 mg/L, due to strict law enforcement and water treatment processes optimization. However, before 2010, those concentrations were more than 0.05 mg/L, which could have led to an accumulation of Mn oxides in the distribution system. This could be one of the main reasons for black water occurrence. Therefore, regular monitoring of Mn concentration in the distribution system, flushing, and proper Mn removal at WTPs are needed, to supply clean and palatable tap water.

  • In our nature, the utilization of rainwater is essential for healthy water recirculation. This is one of the solutions of the increment of impermeability surface according to the development of new cities; this study of the improvement of rainwater quality has been carried on through the improvement of collecting and restoring system of rainwater. The southwestern region of Daejeon City, the rainwater coefficient of run off was 0.40 and this number had computed to 0.59 after the development. After filtration of rainwater, the heavy metal (Cu, As, Cr, Fe, Mn) contents level were lower than underground water. Moreover, collected rainwater showed better quality than underground water in following criteria; hardness, permanganate consumption quality, chloride, evaporation residue, sulfates and nitrate nitrogen. This water quality met the gray water quality standards. The rainwater quality was still suitable to use as bathroom flushing and gardening after 100 days of storage. This study proved that modification (installation of cover with gutter to existing rainwater collection system, proper filtering, and installation of underground storage tank) of collection system could improve quality of water and maintain this approximately 100 days.

  • In this study, microemulsion formation of water and carbon dioxide was investigated by using surfactant as one of the methods for increasing the mutual solubility between water and carbon dioxide. The surfactant 2,2,3,3,3-Pentafluoro-1-propanol was added to form a microemulsion of water and carbon dioxide. The cloud point change and trend of micro emulsion were investigated by adding water and a certain amount of surfactant, 2,2,3,3,3-Pentafluoro-1-propanol to supercritical carbon dioxide. In the case of surfactant + carbon dioxide system, it was 8.35 ~ 12.69 MPa in temperature range of 313.2 ~ 353.2 K. In the case of water + surfactant + carbon dioxide system, the temperature ranged from 318.2 ~ 338.2 K to pressure range 7.83 ~ 17.28 MPa.

  • The objective of the study is to assess the water quality improvement resulted from the rearrangement of the irrigation water supply systems at Mankyeong River and Ansung Chun basin. There is a mixed type of watershed composed of urban and rural areas in the region. From the water quality analysis, showed high T-N, T-P concentration in Ansung chun and Mankyeong river caused by paddies separated widely around Ansung chun and Mankyeong river and by runoff of the pollution from the Ansung and Jeonju city. but the upstream of the river showed clean water quality, so if we use the upstream water as river maintenance water for water quality improvement, it is expected to be positive effect for rural environmental aspect.

  • The shortage of available freshwater is a major global issue worldwide and an increasing demand for clean water requires efficient water purification strategies. Here we describe a method to drastically increase the efficiency of a microreactor for photocatalytic water purification. To find out how the shape of the catalyst affects water purification, nanostructured catalysts of different structures, such as dense film, nanorod, and nanohelix, are prepared and their water purification characteristics are analyzed. Compared to the flat catalyst, the nanostructured catalyst showed a distinct ability in its pollutant degradation, but the detailed structural variation does not significantly affect the water purification. To further increase efficiency, we apply a micromixer to nanorod-based microreactor, which allows even enhanced mass transfer. This enables the solution of the water purification problem and greatly contributes to the industries where the efficiency of photocatalytic activity has attracted extensive interest.

  • Based on this study, the remarkable water saving washbowl system (about 90% water saving) was designed and developed by reusing the face washed water. Once the used water for washing one's face was stored into a water tank, and the dirt substances and floating matters are effectively removed by the filtrating system in order to maintain the clean water tank for a toilet stool. By using this great washbowl system, the total consumption of tap water is dramatically decreased and the total expense for sewage disposal plants is efficiently saved.

  • The typical treatment method for fluoride polluted water is the flocculation and precipitation method which usually is capable of reducing the fluoride concentration down to the level of about 10 ppm. However, this method is no longer effective for the treatment of contaminated water having less than 10 ppm of fluorides. To remove fluorides in polluted water from the fluoride concentration between 1 to 10 ppm, several adsorbents were prepared mainly based on an activated alumina and the fluoride removal efficiencies of the adsorbents were analyzed. The best fluoride removal efficiency was obtained when the activated alumina treated by sulfuric acid was used as the adsorbent. A proper calcination temperature for the sulfuric acid contained activated alumina was found to be about $500^{\circ}C$. An adsorption isotherm for the adsorbent was also obtained by using Freundlich model. The values of the constants in Freundlich isotherm model were calculated to be K=6.63 and 1/n=0.29 based on the results obtained from the series of batch type adsorption experiments.

  • Nylon membrane was used to separate ethanol-water by a pervaporation method. Experimental equations were derived to use the simulation of membrane-aided distillation using nylon. The increases in permeation pressure resulted in the decrease in selectivity and energy consumption. The energy cost to enrich ethanol from 94 wt% to 99.5 wt% was calculated to be 53.3 won/kg of ethanol with extractive distillation and 18.9 won/kg of ethanol with a pervaporation method. The saving energy by the pervaporation method is consumed by recycling the permeate residue into the distillation column in the membrane-aided distillation column. Therefore, membrane with the high selectivity to minimize the permeate residue recycle is required to effectively enrich ethanol in the membrane-aided distillation method.
