Characteristics and synergistic effects of the coliquefaction of Alaskan subbituminous coal, wasted tire, and polypropylene were investigated in a tubing-bomb reactor at 41$0^{\circ}C$, and the coliquefaction reactions were performed at 37$0^{\circ}C$~45$0^{\circ}C$ to evaluate the coliquefaction mechanism. The coliquefaction kinetic model based on the free-radical theory was proposed and simulated by the non-linear parameter estimation method. Simulated results represented experimental ones successfully with the correlation coefficient of 0.99. When a catalyst was not used, the conversions were decreased as tetralin increase due to the decrease of liquefaction of polypropylene. When naphthenate catalysts of Mo, Co, and Fe were used, the coliquefaction conversions were increased with the increase of the liquefaction of polypropylene. When Co-naphthenate catalyst was used, the increase of the coliquefaction conversion were as high as 21~23%.

Theoretical reviews of integrated gasification combined cycle one of the clean coal technologies and trends in the study and technology development for high temperature desulfurization sorbents were investigated. Reactivity, durability and abrasion resistance is an important key for development of high temperature desulfurization sorbents, the kind of things include calcium, zinc, manganese, iron and copper-based sorbents. Current status of high temperature desulfurization sorbents, manufacturing techniques of zinc-based sorbent in advanced countries has commercialized. In case of Korea, various research studies are underway to commercialize the Zn and non Zn-based high temperature desulfurization sorbents to cheaper and superior capability using various supports.
Effect of physical property of activated carbon on its carbon dioxide adsorption was investigated for the effective control of carbon dioxide. Pinewood sawdust and coal were used as raw materials of activated carbon. Specific surface area, micropore volume and mesopore volume of the prepared activated carbons were determined, respectively. The prepared activated carbons were analyzed for their adsorption capacity of carbon dioxide. The adsorption capacity was then presented with respect to the surface area, micropore volume and mesopore volume, respectively. As a result, the specific surface area and micropore volume of both pinewood and coal activated carbon were highly related to its carbon dioxide capacity. Its mesopore volume hardly affected its carbon dioxide capacity. Preparation of activated carbon with high specific surface area and micropore volume was found to be critical to the effective control of carbon dioxide.
Char gasification is affected by operating conditions such as reaction temperature, reactants gas partial pressure, total system pressure and particle size in addition to chemical composition and physical structure of char. The aim of the present work was to characterize the effect of coal particle size on $CO_{2}$ gasification of chars prepared from two different types of bituminous coals at different reaction temperatures(1,000-$1,400{^{\circ}C}$). Lab scale experiments were carried out at atmospheric pressure in a fixed reactor where heat was supplied into a sample of char particles. When a flow of $CO_{2}$(40 vol%) was delivered into the reactor, the char reacted with $CO_{2}$ and was transformed into CO. Carbon conversion of the char was measured using a real time gas analyzer having NDIR CO/$CO_{2}$ sensor. The results showed that the gasification reactivity increased as the particle size decreased for a given temperature. The sensitivity of the reactivity to particle size became higher as the temperature increases. The size effects became remarkably prominent at higher temperatures and became a little prominent for lower reactivity coal. The particle size and coal type also affected reaction models. The shrinking core model described better for lower reactivity coal, whereas the volume reaction model described better for higher reactivity coal.
Gasification technology is one of the representative next-generation fossil fuel utilization technologies, converting low grade fossil fuels such as coal, heavy residue oil, pet-coke into highly clean and efficient energy sources. Accordingly, related market demand for gasification technology is ever increasing steadily and rapidly. A few years ago, conventional pulverized coal utilization technology had an edge over the gasification technology but the most significant technical barrier of limited capacity and availability has been largely overcome nowadays. Futhermore, it will be more competitive in the future with the advancement of related technologies such as gas turbine, ion transfer membrane and so on. China has recently completed a commercialization-capable large-scale coal gasification technology for its domestic market expansion and foreign export, rapidly becoming a newcomer in the field and competing with existing US and EU technical leadership at comparable terms. Techno-economic aspect deserves intensive attention and steady R&D efforts need to continue in organized, considering that gasification technology is quite attractive combined with $CO_2$ capture process and coal to SNG plant is economically viable in Korea where natural gas is very expensive. In the present paper, recent technology development and commercialization trend of many leading companies with coal gasification expertise have been reviewed with significant portion of literature cited from the recently held '2014 Gasification Technology Conference'.

Co-firing of biomass with coal is a promising combustion technology in a coal-fired power plant. However, it still requires verifications to apply co-firing in an actual boiler. In this study, data from the Thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA) and Drop tube furnace(DTF) were used to obtain the combustion characteristics of biomass when co-firing with coal. The combustion characteristics were verified using experimental results including reactivity from the TGA and Unburned carbon(UBC) data from the DTF. The experiment also analyzed with the variation of the biomass blending ratio and biomass particle size. It was determined that increasing the biomass blending ratio resulted in incomplete chemical reactions due to insufficient oxygen levels because of the rapid initial combustion characteristics of the biomass. Thus, the optimum blending condition of the biomass based on the results of this study was found to be 5 while oxygen enrichment reduced the increase of UBC that occurred during combustion of blended biomass and coal.

In this study, the effect of particle size on the combustion characteristics of pulverized sub-bituminous coal was experimentally investigated. A laminar-flow-entrained reactor was designed and implemented to realize the desired heating ratio and temperature corresponding to the combustion atmosphere of a pulverized-coal-fueled furnace. The flame length and structure of burning particles according to different sizes were investigated. Coal combustion processes were clearly distinguished by direct visual observation of the flame structure. The onset point of volatile ignition is greatly affected by changes in the particle size, and the burning time of the volatiles is least affected by changes in the particle size. The length and instability of char flame also increase with the increase of the particle size. However, the char consumption rate within the residential time remains nearly constant.

The suspended particulate matters had been collected on quartz fiber fiters by a cascade impactor having 9 size stages for 4 years (Sep. 1991 to Dec. 1995) in Kyung Hee University-Suwon Campus. Membrane filters were used to collected the particulate matters on each stage. The weight concentration on each stage was obtained by a microbalance and further chemical element levels were determined by an x-ray fluorescence system. Based on these chemical information, our study focused on applying the target transformation factor analysis (TTFA), a receptor model, to identify aerosol sources and to apportion quantitatively their mass contribution. There are total of 63 ambient data sets. Each data set consists of the 8 size-ranged subdata sets characterized by 16 elemental variables. By the results, four to five sources were extracted from each size range and some sources reappeared in other size ranges. Then total of 8 source profiles were statistically generated from all the ranges, such as oil burning source, soil source, field burning source, gasoline related source, coal burning source, marine source, glass related source, and unknown sources. Apportioning aerosol mass to each source was intensively examined by investigating emission inventories near the study area. The results showed that soil particle source was the most significant contributor. However, coal and oil burning sources were the major anthropogenic ones. The study finally proposed some air quality control strategies to achieve the clean air quality in Suwon area.
To achieve the clean and efficient utilization of low-rank coal, the combustion and pollutant emission characteristics of chars from low-temperature and fast pyrolysis in a horizontal tube furnace were investigated in a TG-MS analyzer. According to the results, the combustion characteristic of chars was poorer than its parent coals. The temperature range of gaseous product release had a good agreement with that of TGA weight loss. Gaseous products of samples with high content of volatile were released earlier. The NO and NO2 emissions of chars were lower than their parent coals. Coals of high rank (anthracite and sub-bituminous) released more NO and NO2 than low rank coals of lignite, so were chars from coals of different ranks. SO2 emissions of char samples were lower than parent coals and did not show obvious relationship with coal ranks.
In this study, we analyzed the operational characteristics of a 0.25 MW methanation pilot plant. Isothermal reactor controled the heat released from methanation reaction by saturated water in shell side. Methanation process consisting of isothermal reactor and adiabatic reactor had advantages with no recycle compressor and more less reactors compared with methanation process with only adiabatic reactors. In case that $H_2$/CO ratio of syngas was under 3, carbon deposition occurred on catalyst in tube side of isothermal reactor and the pressure of reactors increased. In case that $H_2$/CO ratio was maintained around 3, no carbon deposition on catalyst in tube side of isothermal reactor was found by monitoring the differential pressure of reactors and by measuring the differential pressure of several of tubes filled with catalyst before and after operating. It was shown that CO conversion and $CH_4$selectivity were over 99, 97%, respectively, and the maximum $CH_4$productivity was $695ml/h{\cdot}g-cat$.
