In this study, a series of laboratory tests based on 'Unit-cell concept' are performed to investigate improvement characteristics of clay ground in sand compaction pile method. Settlement reduction characteristics of composite ground and improvement characteristics of clay part could be qualified. In these procedure, the new strain-compression index($C_{\epsilon}$) of composite ground are adopted to show compressibility of composite ground according to the area replacement ratio, which is similar to the compression index($C_c$) in pure clay ground. Also, using normalization of reduction of water content in composite ground to the initial water content, improvement characteristics of clay part are investigated.
The EPS construction method-one kind of the load reducing methods-utilizes the EPS blocks, ultra-light materials whose unit weight is about 1/100 of soils and has been applied to many soft ground sites. It needed 3,000 days to get the 90% degree of the consolidation for the case of 12m high soil embankments on the 30m thick soft clayey foundations. The N value of SPT at this deposit was less than 5. The pack drain was installed to promote the radial consolidations. Although staged embankments were planned, designers failed to get a sufficient stability of the foundation ground. Therefore, the EPS fill method was selected to reduce the load and the construction period. EPS blocks(D-20 model) replaced the upper part of the soil embankments. These complex embankments reduced the ground settlement and the construction period. The possibility of lateral movements of the bridge abutments was checked and the design scheme was reviewed.
For a two-way drainage deposit under a surcharge load, it is possible to leave a layer adjacent to the bottom drainage boundary without prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) improvement and achieve approximately the same degree of consolidation as a fully penetrated case. This depth is designated as an optimum PVD installation depth. Further, for a two-way drainage deposit under vacuum pressure, if the PVDs are fully penetrated through the deposit, the vacuum pressure will leak through the bottom drainage boundary. In this case, the PVDs have to be partially penetrated, and there is an optimum installation depth. The equations for calculating these optimum installation depths are presented, and the usefulness of the equations is studied by using finite element analysis as well as laboratory model test results.
The suspension bridge between Myodo and Gwangyang is located in the main navigation channel to Gwangyang Harbor. So, there is need for the collision protection against large vessels. As ship collision protection, artificial island with concrete block quay wall is planned. The risk analysis and non-linear numerical analysis are introduced to consider the ship collision effects. In the Gwangyang bay area, there are some different sedimental conditions in clayey stratums. For a desirable design, we classify into four zones and 2 layers in each zone, and then determine suitable soil properties considering these zones. As a ground improvement under artificial island, DCM and SCP methods are Planned.
Along with the increasing need of sea development, the hydraulic stability of seabed structure on a soft seafloor ground is becoming an issue in the course of seaside development recently. However, the movement and hydraulic resistance or hydraulic stability of seafloor ground are mutually coupled with various phenomena, and there has been no clear proof for the issue, which makes it difficult to forecast. Furthermore, most researches are focused on hydraulic variables and the conditions of marine external force, while there have been few researches into the assessment in consideration of the type of a seafloor ground and the geotechnical characteristics. In addition, according to the periodic change of the flow direction, possible changes in hydraulic resistance performance of the seafloor deserves all the recognition. But there is no way to measure the hydraulic unstability of the sea ground due to tidal flow quantitatively. In this study, conventional hydraulic resistance measurement apparatus was improved to consider direction change of the current flow. Various artificial clayey soil specimens were made from Kaolinite and Jumunjin standard sand and hydraulic resistance tests were performed by changing the flow direction to validate the effect of the direction change on the scour of the seafloor.
In general, two methods have been used to predict settlement of soft ground. One method is Terzaghi's one dimensional consolidation theory which gives time-settlement relationship using the standard consolidation test results. The other is forecasting method of ground settlement to be occured in the future using in-situ monitoring data. The above both methods have some defects in application manner or in itself especially in very deep and soft clayey ground. In view of the lessons and experiences of soft ground improvement projects, several techniques were proposed for more accurate theorectical calculation of consolidation settlement as follows ; ① Subdivision of soft ground, ② Consideration of secondary compression, ③ Using the modified compression index, etc. And also, revised hyperbolic fitting method was suggested to minimize the error of predicted future settlement. In addition, revised De-Beer equation of immediate settlement of loose sandy soil was proposed to overcome the tendency to show too small settlement calculation results by original De-Deer equation. And also, considering the various effects of settlement delay in the improved ground by vertical drains, time-settlement caculation equation(Onoue method) was revised to match the tendency of settlement delay by using the characteristics of discharge capacity decreases of vertical drain with time elapse by the pattern of hyperbolic equation.
