  • In this paper, we present a real-time system to detect abnormal events on gas pipes, based on the signals which are observed through the audio sensors attached on them. First, features are extracted from these signals so that they are robust to noise and invariant to the distance between a sensor and a spot at which an abnormal event like an attack on the gas pipes occurs. Then, a classifier is constructed to detect abnormal events using neural networks. It is a combination of two neural network models, a Gaussian mixture model and a multi-layer perceptron, for the reduction of miss and false alarms. The former works for miss alarm prevention and the latter for false alarm prevention. The experimental result with real data from the actual gas system shows that the proposed system is effective in detecting the dangerous events in real-time with an accuracy of 92.9%.

  • The objective of this paper is to present a new feature-vector extraction method for the automatic detection and classification of power quality(PQ) disturbances, where FIT, DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform), and Fisher's criterion are utilized to extract an appropriate feature vector. In particular, the proposed classifier consists of three parts: i.e., (i) automatic detection of PQ disturbances, where the wavelet transform and signal power estimation method are utilized to detect each disturbance, (ii) feature vector extraction from the detected disturbance, and (iii) automatic classification, where Multi-Layer Perceptron(MLP) is used to classify each disturbance from the corresponding extracted feature vector. To demonstrate the performance and applicability of the proposed classification algorithm, some test results obtained by analyzing 10-class power quality disturbances are also provided.

  • Smoke and fire have different shapes and colours. This article suggests a fully connected system which is used two features using Adaboost algorithm for constructing a strong classifier as linear combination. We calculate the local histogram feature by gradient and bin, local binary pattern value, and projection vectors for each cell. According to the histogram magnitude, this paper applied adapted weighting value to improve the recognition rate. To preserve the local region and shape feature which has edge intensity, this paper processed the normalization sequence. For the extracted features, this paper Adaboost algorithm which makes strong classification to classify the objects. Our smoke detection system based on the proposed approach leads to higher detection accuracy than other system.

  • Human emotions are expressed in various ways. It can be expressed through language, facial expression and gestures. In particular, the facial expression contains many information about human emotion. These vague human emotion appear not in single emotion, but in combination of various emotion. This paper proposes a emotional expression algorithm using Active Appearance Model(AAM) and Fuzz k- Nearest Neighbor which give facial expression in similar with vague human emotion. Applying Mahalanobis distance on the center class, determine inclusion level between center class and each class. Also following inclusion level, appear intensity of emotion. Our emotion recognition system can recognize a complex emotion using Fuzzy k-NN classifier.

  • In this paper, we suggested the combination of HMM(Hidden Markov Model) and MLP (Multi-Layer Perceptron) with GA(genetic algorithm) for a recognition of EMG signals. To describe EMG signal's dynamic properties, HMM algorithm was adapted and due to its outstanding abilities in static signal classification MLP was connected as a real processor. We also used GA( Genetic Algorithm) for improving MLP's learning rate. Experimental results showed that the suggested classifier gave higher EMG signal recognition rates with faster learning time than other one.

  • Classification models pertaining to receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis have been extended from univariate to multivariate setup by linearly combining available multiple markers. One such classification model is the multivariate ROC curve analysis. However, not all markers contribute in a real scenario and may mask the contribution of other markers in classifying the individuals/objects. This paper addresses this issue by developing an algorithm that helps in identifying the important markers that are significant and true contributors. The proposed variable selection framework is supported by real datasets and a simulation study, it is shown to provide insight about the individual marker's significance in providing a classifier rule/linear combination with good extent of classification.

  • In this paper, we develop a galaxy image classification method based on hand-crafted features and machine learning techniques. Additionally, we provide an empirical analysis to reveal which combination of the techniques is effective for galaxy image classification. To achieve this, we developed a framework which consists of four modules such as preprocessing, feature extraction, feature post-processing, and classification. Finally, we found that the best technique for galaxy image classification is a method to use a median filter, ORB vector features and a voting classifier based on RBF SVM, random forest and logistic regression. The final method is efficient so we believe that it is applicable to embedded environments.

  • We present a method to recognize hand gestures using skeletal joint data obtained from Microsoft's Kinect sensor. We propose a combination feature of multi-angle histograms robust to orientation variations to represent the observation sequence of skeletons. The proposed feature efficiently represents the orientation variations of gestures that can be occurred according to person or environment by combining the multiple angle histograms with various angular-quantization levels. The gesture represented as combination of multi-angle histograms and random decision forest classifier improve the recognition performance. We conduct the experiments in hand gesture dataset obtained from a kinect sensor and show that our method outperforms the other methods by comparing the recognition performance.

  • As a major factor for efficient management and retrieval of the articles in databases, keywords are classified into uncontrolled keywords and controlled keywords. Most of Korean scholarly databases fail to provide controlled vocabularies to indexing research articles which help users to retrieve relevant papers exhaustively. In this paper, we carried out automatic descriptor assignment experiments to Korean articles using automatic classifiers learned with descriptors in international database. The results of the experiments show that the classifier learning with descriptors in international database can potentially offer controlled vocabularies to Korean scholarly articles having English s. Also, we sought to improve the performance of automatic descriptor assignment using various classifiers and combination of them.

  • A human sign language is generally composed of both static and dynamic gestures. Each gesture is represented by a hand shape, its position, and hand movement (for a dynamic gesture). One of the problems found in automated sign language translation is on segmenting a hand movement that is part of a transitional movement from one hand gesture to another. This transitional gesture conveys no meaning, but serves as a connecting period between two consecutive gestures. Based on the observation that many dynamic gestures as appeared in Thai sign language dictionary are of quasi-periodic nature, a method was developed to differentiate between a (meaningful) dynamic gesture and a transitional movement. However, there are some meaningful dynamic gestures that are of non-periodic nature. Those gestures cannot be distinguished from a transitional movement by using the signal quasi-periodicity. This paper proposes a hybrid method using a combination of the periodicity-based gesture segmentation method with a HMM-based gesture classifier. The HMM classifier is used here to detect dynamic signs of non-periodic nature. Combined with the periodic-based gesture segmentation method, this hybrid scheme can be used to identify segments of a transitional movement. In addition, due to the use of quasi-periodic nature of many dynamic sign gestures, dimensionality of the HMM part of the proposed method is significantly reduced, resulting in computational saving as compared with a standard HMM-based method. Through experiment with real measurement, the proposed method's recognition performance is reported.
