  • The static analysis of structures with arbitrary cross-section geometry and material lamination via a refined one-dimensional (1D) approach is presented in this paper. Higher-order 1D models with a variable order of expansion for the displacement field are developed on the basis of Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). Classical Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories are obtained as particular cases of the first-order model. Numerical results of displacement, strain and stress are provided by using the finite element method (FEM) along the longitudinal direction for different configurations in excellent agreement with three-dimensional (3D) finite element solutions. In particular, a layered thin-walled cylinder is considered as first assessment with a laminated conventional cross-section. An atherosclerotic plaque is introduced as a typical structure with arbitrary cross-section geometry and studied for both the homogeneous and nonhomogeneous material cases through the 1D variable kinematic models. The analyses highlight limitations of classical beam theories and the importance of higher-order terms in accurately detecting in-plane cross-section deformation without introducing additional numerical problems. Comparisons with 3D finite element solutions prove that 1D CUF provides remarkable three-dimensional accuracy in the analysis of even short and nonhomogeneous structures with arbitrary geometry through a significant reduction in computational cost.

  • For the spatially coupled free vibration analysis of composite box beams resting on elastic foundation under the axial force, the exact solutions are presented by using the power series method based on the homogeneous form of simultaneous ordinary differential equations. The general vibrational theory for the composite box beam with arbitrary lamination is developed by introducing Vlasov°Øs assumption. Next, the equations of motion and force-displacement relationships are derived from the energy principle and explicit expressions for displacement parameters are presented based on power series expansions of displacement components. Finally, the dynamic stiffness matrix is calculated using force-displacement relationships. In addition, the finite element model based on the classical Hermitian interpolation polynomial is presented. To show the performances of the proposed dynamic stiffness matrix of composite box beam, the numerical solutions are presented and compared with the finite element solutions using the Hermitian beam elements and the results from other researchers. Particularly, the effects of the fiber orientation, the axial force, the elastic foundation, and the boundary condition on the vibrational behavior of composite box beam are investigated parametrically. Also the emphasis is given in showing the phenomenon of vibration mode change.

  • It is often hard to obtain analytical solutions of boundary value problems of shells. Introducing some approximations into the governing equations may allow us to get analytical solutions of boundary value problems. Instead of an analytical procedure, we can apply a numerical method to the governing equations. Since the governing equations of shells of revolution under symmetric load are expressed by ordinary differential equations, a numerical solution of ordinary differential equations is applicable to solve the equations. In this paper, the governing equations of orthotropic spherical shells under symmetric load are derived from the classical theory based on differential geometry, and the analysis is numerically carried out by computer program of Runge-Kutta methods. The numerical results are compared to the solutions of a commercial analysis program, SAP2000, and show good agreement.

  • This research analyzes the dynamic stability of stiffened plates on elastic foundations using the finite element method. For analyzing the stiffened plates, both the Mindlin plate theory and Timoshenko beam-column theory were applied. In application of the finite element method, 8-nodes serendipity element system and 3-nodes finite element system were used for plate and beam elements, respectively Elastic foundations were modeled as the Pasternak foundations in which the continuity effect of foundation is considered. In order to verify the theory of this study, solutions obtained by this analysis were compared with the classical solutions in open literature and experimental solutions. The dynamic stability legions of stiffened plates on Pasternak foundations were determined according to changes of in-plane stresses, foundation parameters and dimensions of stiffener.

  • Mixed Chinese Postman Problem (MCPP) is a practical generalization of the classical Chinese Postman Problem (CPP) and it could be applied in many real world. Although MCPP is useful in terms of reality, MCPP has been proved to be a NP-complete problem. To find optimal solutions efficiently in MCPP, we can reduce searching space to be small effective searching space containing optimal solutions. We propose GENIIS methodology, which is a kind of hybrid algorithm combines the approximate algorithms and genetic algorithm. To get good solutions in the effective searching space, GENIIS uses approximate algorithm and genetic algorithm. This paper validates the usefulness of the proposed approach in a simulation. The results of our paper could be utilized to increase the efficiencies of network and transportation in business.

  • The axisymmetric problem of a functionally graded annular plate is considered by extending the theory of functionally graded materials plates suggested by Mian and Spencer (1998). In particular, their expansion formula for displacements is adopted and the hypothesis that the material parameters can vary along the thickness direction in an arbitrary continuous fashion is retained. However, their analysis is extended here in two aspects. First, the material is assumed to be transversely isotropic, rather than isotropic. Second, the plate is no longer tractions-free on the top and bottom surfaces, but subject to uniform loads applied on the surfaces. The elasticity solutions are given for a uniformly loaded annular plate of functionally graded materials for a total of six different boundary conditions. Numerical results are given for a simply supported functionally graded annular plate, and good agreement with those by the classical plate theory is obtained.

  • Smoking is one of the main causes of health problems and continues to be one of the world's most significant health challenges. In this paper, we use the multi-step Adomian decomposition method (MSADM) to obtain approximate analytical solutions for a mathematical fractional model of the evolution of the smoking habit. The proposed MSADM scheme is only a simple modification of the Adomian decomposition method (ADM), in which ADM is treated algorithmically with a sequence of small intervals (i.e. time step) for finding accurate approximate solutions to the corresponding problems. A comparative study between the new algorithm and the classical Runge-Kutta method is presented in the case of integer-order derivatives. The solutions obtained are also presented graphically. The results reveal that the method is effective and convenient for solving linear and nonlinear differential equations of fractional order.

  • A linearised buckling analysis of thin-walled beams is addressed in this paper. Beam theories formulated according to a unified approach are presented. The displacement unknown variables on the cross-section of the beam are approximated via Mac Laurin's polynomials. The governing differential equations and the boundary conditions are derived in terms of a fundamental nucleo that does not depend upon the expansion order. Classical beam theories such as Euler-Bernoulli's and Timoshenko's can be retrieved as particular cases. Slender and deep beams are investigated. Flexural, torsional and mixed buckling modes are considered. Results are assessed toward three-dimensional finite element solutions. The numerical investigations show that classical and lower-order theories are accurate for flexural buckling modes of slender beams only. When deep beams or torsional buckling modes are considered, higher-order theories are required.

  • Based on the multiple-time-scale (MTS) method, a general formula has been presented for solving an n-th, n = 2, 3, ${\ldots}$, order ordinary differential equation with strong linear damping forces. Like the solution of the unified Krylov-Bogoliubov-Mitropolskii (KBM) method or the general Struble's method, the new solution covers the un-damped, under-damped and over-damped cases. The solutions are identical to those obtained by the unified KBM method and the general Struble's method. The technique is a new form of the classical MTS method. The formulation as well as the determination of the solution from the derived formula is very simple. The method is illustrated by several examples. The general MTS solution reduces to its classical form when the real parts of eigen-values of the unperturbed equation vanish.

  • For the last twenty years fragment assembly in DNA sequencing followed the "overlap - layout - consensus"paradigm that is used in all currently available assembly tools. Although this approach proved to be useful in assembling clones, it faces difficulties in genomic shotgun assembly: the existing algorithms make assembly errors and are often unable to resolve repeats even in prokaryotic genomes. Biologists are well-aware of these errors and are forced to carry additional experiments to verify the assembled contigs. We abandon the classical “overlap - layout - consensus”approach in favor of a new Eulerian Superpath approach that, for the first time, resolves the problem of repeats in fragment assembly. Our main result is the reduction of the fragment assembly to a variation of the classical Eulerian path problem. This reduction opens new possibilities for repeat resolution and allows one to generate error-free solutions of the large-scale fragment assemble problems. The major improvement of EULER over other algorithms is that it resolves all repeats except long perfect repeats that are theoretically impossible to resolve without additional experiments.
