  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the applicability of Single Linear Reservoir (SLR) model for runoff computations of small river basins in Korea. In the existing watershed flood routing methods the storage coefficient(K), which is the dominant parameter in the model, has been proposed to be computed in terms of the wqtershed characteristics. However, in the prsent study, the rainfall characteristics in addition to the watershed characteristics were taken into account in the multiple regression analysis for more accurate estimation of storage coefficient. The parameters finally adopted for the regressions were the drainge are, mean stream slope of the watershed, and the duration and total dffective amount of rainfalls. To verify the applicability of SLR model the computed results by SLR model with K determined by the regression equation were compared with the observed gydrographs, and also with those by other runoff computation methods; namely, the Clark method, nakayasu's synthetic unit hydrograph method and Nash model. The results showed that the present zSLR model gave the best results among these methods in the case of small river basins, but for the whatersheds with significant draingage area the Clark method gave the best results. However, it was speculated that the SLR model could also be accurately applied for flood compuatation in large wagersheds provided that the regression for storage coefficients were made with the actual data obtained in the large river basins.

  • The objective of this study is to propose a methodology of the flood runoff analysis in steep mountainous basins and the analysis basin is the Jasa valley basin in Chungju city Analyzing the spatial pattern of the rainfall in 1994. 6 30~7.1, the seasonal rainy front was tied up in the whole central district, and the rainfall center was moving from the northern Chungbuk province to the northern Kyongbuk province and caused heavy storm. Analyzing the temporal pattern with the Huff method, the 52.5% of the rainfall was concentrated on the 3rd quartile. Rainfall frequency analysis is accomplished by five distribution types; 2-parameter Lognomal, 3-parameter Lognomal, Pearson Type III, Log-Pearson Type III and Extremal Type I distribution Rainfall-runoff analysis in Jasa valley basin was made using HEC-HMS model. Jasa valley basin was divided into 3 sub-basins and the analysis point was 3 points{A, B and C point) With the rainfall data measured by the 10 minutes, the flood runoff also was calculated by as many minutes. SCS CN model, Clark UH model and Muskingum routing model in HEC-HMS model were used to simulate the runoff volume using selected rainfall event.

  • In this study, the maintenance problems were investigated through checking the creeks which were improved by close-to-nature river improvement technique. The characteristics of flow were measured at Changsa Creek in Suwon city. The computational results of numerical model with kinematic wave theory was evaluated through observation data about precipitation, velocity, and flow depth. Furthermore, SCS, Clark, and RRL models were compared to the actual observations. As a result, the kinematic wave theory's calculated peak time of discharge concentration occurred little earlier than the actual observation, but the tendency of hydrograph coincided with observation.

  • A number of projects for development have been done continuously due to the increase of tourist in Jeju Island. However flood disaster countermeasure due to urbanization is not considered during this development projects. This study is to make basic process for the flood estimation in Han stream of Jeju Island. The variation of stream discharge due the every 5 years' land use change from 1980 to 2005. Data for flood events (rainfall and discharge) were collected for HEC-HMS model. Clark method was used for unit hydrograph analysis. For the estimation of Clark unit hydrograph parameters, Kraven II and Sabol's empirical equations were applied. The peak discharge increased 9.9~33.67% and total discharge amount increased 12.53~30.21%. Also, time of concentration for peak discharge was reduced by 10 minutes for each event.

  • Now days, heavy storm occur to be continue. It is hard to use before frequency based on flood discharge for decision that design water pocket structure. We need to estimation of frequency based on flood discharge on the important basin likely city or basin that damage caused by flood recurrence. In this paper flood discharge calculated by Clark watershed method and SCS synthetic unit hydrograph method about upside during each minute of among time distribution method of rainfall, Huff method choosing Bocheong Stream basin that is representative basin of International Hydrologic Project (IHP) about time distribution of rainfall that exert big effect at flood discharge estimate to research target basin because of and the result is as following. Relation between probability flood discharge that is calculated through frequency analysis about flood discharge data and rainfall - runoff that is calculated through outward flow model was assumed about $48.1{\sim}95.9%$ in the case of $55.8{\sim}104.0%$, SCS synthetic unit hydrograph method in case of Clark watershed method, and Clark watershed method has big value overly in case of than SCS synthetic unit hydrograph method in case of basin that see, but branch of except appeared little more similarly with frequency flood discharge that calculate using survey data. In the case of Critical duration, could know that change is big area of basin is decrescent. When decide time distribution type of rainfall, apply upside during most Huff 1-ST because heavy rain phenomenon of upsides appears by the most things during result 1-ST about observation recording of target area about Huff method to be method to use most in business, but maximum value of peak flood discharge appeared on Huff 3-RD too in the case of upside, SCS synthetic unit hydrograph method during Huff 3-RD incidental of this research and case of Clark watershed method. That is, in the case of Huff method, latitude is decide that it is decision method of reasonable design floods that calculate applying during all $1-ST{\sim}4-TH$.

  • This study used the WGR model to generate the rainfall input and the modified Clark method to estimate the runoff with the aim of investigating how the errors from the areal average rainfall propagates to runoff estimates. This was done for several cases of raingauge density and also by considering several storm directions. Summarizing the study results are as follows. (1) Rainfall and runoff errors decrease exponentially as the raingauge density increases. However, the error stagnates after a threshold density of raingauges. (2) Rainfall errors more affect to runoff estimates when the density of raingauges is relatively low. Generally, the ratio between estimation errors of rainfall and runoff volumes was found much less than one, which indicates that there is a smoothing effect of the basin. However, the ratio between estimation errors of rainfall to peak flow becomes greater than one to indicate the amplification of rainfall effect to peak flow. (3) For the study basin in this studs no significant effect of storm direction could be found. However, the runoff error becomes higher when the storm and drainage directions are identical. Also, the error was found higher for the peak flow than for the overall runoff hydrograph.

  • The methodology of utilizing Intensity-Duration-flood Quantity (IDQ) curve for flood alert and warning was introduced and its performance was evaluated. For this purpose the lumped parameter model was calibrated and validated for gauged basin data set and the index precipitation equivalent to alert and warning flood was estimated. The index precipitation and IDQ curves associated by three different Antecedant Moisture Conditions (AMCs) are made provision for various possible flood scenarios. The test basin is Wonju-cheon basin ($94.4km^2$) located in Gangwon province, Korea. The IDQ curves corresponding to alert (50% of design flood level) and warning (70% of design flood level) level was estimated using the Clark unit hydrograph based lumped parameter model. The performance evaluation showed 0.704 of POD (Probability of Detection), 0.136 of FAR (False Alarm Ratio), and 0.633 of CSI (Critical Success Index), which is improved from the result of IDQ with single fixed AMC.

  • Estimation of runoff peak is needed to assess water availability, in order to support the multifaceted water uses and functions, hence to underscore the modalities for efficient water utilization. The magnitude of storm rainfall acts as a primary input for basin level runoff computation. The rainfall-runoff linkage plays a pivotal role in water resource system management and feasibility level planning for resource distribution. Considering this importance, a case study has been carried out in the Hancheon basin of Jeju Island where distinctive hydrological characteristics are investigated for continuous storm rainfall and high permeable geological features. The study aims to estimate unit hydrograph parameters, peak runoff and peak time of storm rainfalls based on Clark unit hydrograph method. For analyzing observed runoff, five storm rainfall events were selected randomly from recent years' rainfall and HEC-hydrologic modeling system (HMS) model was used for rainfall-runoff data processing. The simulation results showed that the peak runoff varies from 164 to 548 m3/sec and peak time (onset) varies from 8 to 27 hours. A comprehensive relationship between Clark unit hydrograph parameters (time of concentration and storage coefficient) has also been derived in this study. The optimized values of the two parameters were verified by the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and runoff comparison performance were analyzed by root mean square error (RMSE) and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) estimation. After statistical analysis of the Clark parameters significance level was found in 5% and runoff performances were found as 3.97 RMSE and 0.99 NSE, respectively. The calibration and validation results indicated strong coherence of unit hydrograph model responses to the actual situation of historical storm runoff events.
