  • Background: The purpose of this study was to find out how the lumbar instability during clam exercise causes changes in pelvic rotation and hip joint abductor muscle activity. Design: Case-control study. Methods: Twenty male participated in this study. The amount of pelvic rotation was measured using myomotion during the clam exercise in a normal group and a group of patients with low lumbar instability, and the muscle activity of the muscle gluteus medius and the tensor fasciae latae using an EMG device. Results: The amount of pelvic rotation that occurred during the clam exercise was statistically significantly greater in the lumbar instability group than in the normal group (p<.05), and the ratio of muscle activity of the muscle gluteus medius/the tensor fasciae latae was statistically significantly higher in the normal group than in the lumbar instability group (p<.05). Conclusion: In order to stabilize the lumbo-pelvic and strengthen the strength of the hip joints, it is believed that it is necessary to apply exercise while controlling the lumbo-pelvic movement during clam exercises, and various studies will be needed.

  • The growth of manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum inhabiting culturing ground was studied in west coast Gomso tidal flat of Korea, from August 2000 to July 2001. The density of the clam was the highest in November 2000, showing a monotonic decrease afterwards over the study period. Mean density was $1,224ind./m^2$ during the study period. Size frequencies of the clam showed a unimodal distribution, and its mode increased with shell growth over time. Although the growth of shell length of manila clam was monotonic, the growth rates decreased between July 2001 and February 2002 and increased from March 2002. The biomass of the clam also increased with time, in which the increments becoming larger since March 2002. The clam shell length had linear relationship to shell height, and had logarithmic relationship to total weight, meat wet weight, dry meat weight, and AFDW. Condition index of the clam increased continuously until April, decreasing afterwards in 2001. The pattern was similar in 2002. Based on fluctuations in condition index, the spawning time of manila clam in Gomso tidal flat is inferred to be between May and October. These results suggested that optimal harvests can be made before summer season when growth decreased and mass mortality occurred, after 24 months of seed shell release.

  • Feeding behaviour of the manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum was qualitatively and quantitatively characterized by comparing the contents composition in digestive tract of the clam and the phytoplankton community in surface sea water in Gomso Bay, west coast of Korea. The contents of digestive tract comprised diatoms (71.5%), dinoflagellates (13.1%), nannoplankton (6.6%), and detritus including mesozooplankton. The abundance of food organisms in digestive tract of the clam was high in winter and spring, while low in summer and autumn. But The biomass of phytoplankton in surface sea water revealed the highest value in autumn. Also, the larger the clam size increases the abundance of food organisms in digestive tract. The dominant species in digestive tract were Paralia sulcata and Navicula arenaria such as benthic diatoms and dinoflagellate cysts, whereas the dominant species in surface sea water were Chaetoceros, Skeletonema, Asterionellopsis such as pelagic diatoms in genus, cryptomonads, and P. sulcata. Analyses of digestive tract revealed that benthic diatoms especially represent an important constituent of food organisms in the malina clam and different of phytoplankton size and morphology explain preference for food selectivity.

  • The raw surf clam meat was pretreated with BHA, EDTA or $NaHSO_3$. The pretreated meat was chopped with chopper, and spread the chopped meat on nylon net, and then dehydrated with cabinet type hot air dryer. In the surf clam meat flake process, the pretreating and the copping steps prior to final dehydration improved the pigment retention and texture of the products. The chopping steps prior to dehydration reduced the dehydration time of surf clam meat. The BHA treatment prior to dehydration of mashed surf clam meat had an outstanding effect on the pigment retention during a process of dehydration and storage. The surf dam meat flakes reabsorbed water more rapidly about two times than the dehydrated natural surf clam meat products. The surf clam meat flakes stored for three months in the dark place showed less pigment loss than the exposed ones, and the former reabsorbed water more rapidly than the latter.

  • PURPOSE: This study compared the effects of three different clamshell exercises (CLAM) on the gluteus medius (GMED), quadratus lumborum (QL), anterior hip flexor (AHF), gluteus medius/quadratus lumborum ratio, and gluteus medius/anterior hip flexor ratio by studying the activities of participants with GMED weakness. METHODS: Eleven subjects with weak GMED participated in this study. Subjects performed CLAM under three different conditions (standard, and modified 1 and 2). Surface electromyography was then used to measure the muscle activity and one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to assess the statistical significance of the measured variables. RESULTS: GMED and the QL muscle activities did not differ significantly between the standard CLAM and the modified CLAM with the 2 different foot positions (F=4.74, P=.02; F=4.57, P=.02, respectively). AHF activity was significantly different in the two different foot positions when compared to the standard CLAM (F=11.17, P=.00). However, there was no significant difference between the AHF activities for the two different foot positions (P=.09). Finally, GMED/QL and GMED/AHF ratios were not significantly different between the three different CLAM exercises (F=.63, P=.55; F=.82, P=.45, respectively). CONCLUSION: Modified CLAM can be recommended as a good method to minimize AHF activity while maintaining GMED activity in subjects with weak GMED.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the muscle activity of the hip abductors and the ratio between the hip abductor muscle group according to the range of hip abduction during the clam exercise. Methods: This study was conducted on 18 healthy men in their aged 20 to 29 who had not been diagnosed with spine-related diseases. The subjects performed a clam exercise without rotation of the pelvis in a state of 60° hip flexion and 90° knee joint flexion in the side-lying position. Using Myomotion equipment and EMG, the muscle activity of the hip abductor muscles and the activity ratio between the hip abductor muscle group were measured during the clam exercise by dividing the range into initial, mid-range, and terminal sections. Repeated measures analysis of variants was employed to compare the activity and use of hip abductor muscles according to range of motion during the clam exercise. Results: Gluteus medius muscle activation was significantly increased in the comparison of muscle activity in the initial, mid-range, and terminal sections of hip abduction. Tensor fasciae latae muscle activation was significantly increased in the comparison of muscle activity in all range of motion sections as well. The gluteus medius-tensor fasciae latae muscle activation ratio was significantly increased in the terminal section compared to the initial section. Conclusion: The gluteus medius and tensor fasciae latae had higher muscle activities as they approached the terminal section during the clam exercise, and the hip abduction activity ratio of the gluteus medius and tensor fasciae latae was higher as the range of motion approached the terminal section.

  • Genomic DNA samples isolated from geographical purplish Washington clam (Saxidomus purpuratus) were obtained from three different regions in the Korean Peninsula: Geoje (Geoje population; GJP), Gunsan (Gunsan population; GSP) and a site of North Korea (North Korea population; NKP). The seven primers generated the total 369 loci that can be scored from the GSP clam population. 356 fragments were generated from the NKP clam population. The complexity of the banding patterns varies dramatically between the primers and three localities. In this study, 319 loci were identified in the purplish Washington clam from Geoje and 369 in the clam population from Gunsan: 221 specific loci (69.3%) in the GJP clam population and 300 (81.3%) in the GSP population. These results demonstrate that the primer detected a large quantity of specific fragments, suggesting that the genetic variation in the GSP is higher than in the GJP population. In particular, the BION-28 primer gave DNA profiles with more fragments than the other six primers in the NKP population. The oligonucleotides primer BION-75 produced 21 unique loci to each population, which were ascertaining each population, approximately 250 bp, 300 bp and 400 bp, in the GJP population. Outstandingly, the primer BION-50 detected 21 shared loci by the three populations, major and/or minor fragments of sizes 150 bp, which were matching in all samples. With regard to average bandsharing value (BS) results, individuals from GJP population (0.743) displayed higher bandsharing values than did individuals from GSP population (0.606). In the present study, the dendrogram gained by the seven oligonucleotides primers indicates three genetic clusters: cluster 1 (GEOJE 01 ~ GEOJE 07), cluster 2 (GUNSAN 08 ~ GUNSAN 14), cluster 3 (N.KOREA 15 ~ N.KOREA 21). Among the twenty one clams, the shortest genetic distance that revealed significant molecular differences was between individuals 08 and 09 from the NKP population (genetic distance = 0.073), while the longest genetic distance among the twenty-one individuals that demonstrated significant molecular differences was between individuals GEOJE no. 03 and GUNSAN no. 09 (genetic distance = 0.669). Comparatively, individuals of GJP population were properly closely related to that of NKP population, as revealed in the hierarchical dendrogram of genetic distances. In due course, PCR analysis has revealed the significant genetic distance among three purplish Washington clam populations. PCR fragments discovered in this study could be valuable as a DNA marker of the three geographical clam populations to distinguish.

  • Peptidoglycan in inserts and mammals is well known to improve biological functions in the host's immune system. However, it is unclear how Peptidoglycan exerted its anti-inflammatory capacity especially in clam worm (Marphysa sanguinea). In this experiment, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of clam worm extract treated with (PCWE) peptidoglycan (Micrococcus luteus) in RAW264.7 cells were examined by measuring MDA, catalase, SOD, GSH-Px and inflammatory cytokines (nitric oxide, iNOS, interleukin-$1{\beta}$ and tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$). PCWE significantly increased the activities of catalase, SOD and GSH-Px and decreased the level of MDA. Interestingly, PCWE induced activities of SOD and GSH-Px more than clam worm extract without peptidoglycan (CWE). In addition, PCWE decreased NO production, iNOS, COX-2, TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-$1{\beta}$ better than CWE. Taken together, these results indicate that PCWE has the potential as a natural antioxidant and a therapeutic for inflammation-related diseases.
