  • Due to threats caused by social disasters, operating surveillance devices are essential for social safety. CCTV, infrared cameras and other surveillance equipment are used to observe threats. This research proposes a method for searching for the optimum location of surveillance sensors. A GA (Genetic Algorithm) was used, since this algorithm is one of the most reasonable and efficient methods for solving complex non-linear problems. The sensor specifications, a DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and VITD (Vector Product Interim Terrain Data) maps were used for input data. We designed a chromosome using the sensor pixel location, and used elitism selection and uniform crossover for searching final solution. A fitness function was derived by the number of detected pixels on the borderline and the sum of the detection probability in the surveillance zone. The results of a 5-sensor and a 10-sensor were compared and analyzed.

  • In this paper, the design load acting on a main girder(spine girder) of fish-bone girder pier is proposed. In order to check the structural safety, numerical analyses using finite element program ABAQUS are performed. It is found that the main girder is affected by a torsional behavior as well as a bending behavior and the major influence loading is the torsional loading. Also, from the stress evaluation of the chosen cross section of the main girder, chosen fish-bone girder pier is structurally safe.

  • The present study applied wavelet transform and artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the prediction of daily TOC data. TOC data were transformed into denoised data by the wavelet transform and the noise-reduced data were used for the prediction model by artificial neural networks. For the application of wavelet transform, Daubechies wavelet of order 10 ('db10') was used as a basis function and decomposed the TOC data up to fifth level with five detail components and one approximation component. ANNs were calibrated with the input data of the segregated TOC data corresponding to the details from second to fifth level and the approximation. Consequently, the ANNs model for the prediction of daily TOC data showed the best result when it had seventeen hidden nodes in its layer.

  • An efficient operational strategy using expert system for metro water supply systems in case of emergency situations is developed in this study. The emergency situations of the water supply systems are classified into three categories : pipeline system accident, machinery and electric facility accident and water quality accident. A PC-based expert system is developed using CLIPS for Seoul metro water supply system, Phase 1 & 2 system and Phase 3 & 4 system. Broad professional knowledges and experiences from the experts in the water supply systems have been collected systematically to construct the knowledge base. Decision-making in case of an emergency is based upon the professional knowledge so that a rational and efficient operational management can be available even in the absence of experienced expert. Especially the expert model developed in this study also provides a guide for pumping operation in case of pipeline accident to confirm that the proper pressure to all nodes in the system is supplied. The pipe network simulator KYPIPE has been consecutively executed by trial and error fashion for each pipeline in the system. The results from KYPIPE were included in the knowledge base to supplement the knowledge of the field engineers.

  • This study was performed to develop a new process technology for advanced wastewater treatment using a modified Rotating Activated Bacillus Contactor (RABC) process that adopts anoxic-oxic suspended biomass tanks to enhance nutrients removal. A modified lab-scale RABC process was applied to examine its applicability and to obtain the design factors for the optimum operation of the system. The modified RABC process showed a little more stable and high nutrients removal efficiency than the prototype RABC process: about 70% of nitrogen and 55% of phosphorous removal when the low organic loading (influent COD 200mg/L). However, the processing efficiency of nutrients removal rates was enhanced to great extent when high organic loading: nitrogen 90% and phosphorous 85% (influent COD 500mg/L). High organic loading stimulated extremely good biomass attachment on the reticular carrier RABC stage and the excellent nutrients removal, nevertheless with almost no offensive odor.

  • It was confirmed that the extreme value distribution model applies to probability of exceeding more than once a day monthly the facility capacities using data of daily maximum inflow rate for 7 wastewater treatment plant. The result of applying the extreme value model, A, D, E wastewater treatment plant has a problem compared to B, C, F, G wastewater treatment plant. but all the wastewater treatment plant has a problem except C, F wastewater treatment plant based 80% of facility capacity. In conclusion, if you make a standard in statistical aspects probability exceeding more than once a day monthly can be 'exceed day is less than a few times annually' or 'probability of exceeding more than once a day monthly is less than what percent'.

  • In this study, we divided the process operation scenarios into three categories based on raw water temperature and turbidity. We will select and operate the process operation scenario according to the characteristics of the raw water. The number of algae in the DAF treated water has been analyzed to be less than 100 cells/mL. These results indicated that the DAF process is effective in removing the algae. In addition, the scenario of the integrated management decision algorithm of the DAF process was developed. DAF pilot plants ($500m^3/day$) process has shown a constantly sound performance for the treatment of raw water, yielding a significantly low level of turbidity (DAF treated water, 0.21~1.56 NTU).

  • Backpack-mounted mapping system is firstly introduced for flexible movement in indoor spaces where satellite-based localization is not available. With the achieved advances in miniaturization and weight reduction, use of LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors in mobile platforms has been increasing, and indeed, they have provided high-precision information on indoor environments and their surroundings. Previous research on the development of backpack-mounted mapping systems, has concentrated mostly on the improvement of data processing methods or algorithms, whereas practical system components have been determined empirically. Thus, in the present study, a simulator for a LiDAR sensor (Velodyne VLP-16), was developed for comparison of the effects of diverse conditions on the backpack system and its operation. The simulated data was analyzed by visual inspection and comparison of the data sets' statistics, which differed according to the LiDAR arrangement and moving speed. Also, the data was used as input to a point-cloud registration algorithm, ICP (Iterative Closest Point), to validate its applicability as pre-analysis data. In fact, the results indicated centimeter-level accuracy, thus demonstrating the potentials of simulation data to be utilized as a tool for performance comparison of pointdata processing methods.

  • Drought is a slow-varying natural hazard that is characterized by various factors such that reliable drought forecasting along with uncertainties estimation has been a major issue. In this study, we proposed a stochastic simulation technique based scheme for providing a set of drought scenarios. More specifically, this study utilized a nonstationary Hidden markov model that allows us to include predictors such as climate state variables and global climate model's outputs. The simulated rainfall scenarios were then used to generate the well-known meteorological drought indices such as SPI, PDSI and PN for the three dam watersheds in South Korea. It was found that the proposed modeling scheme showed a capability of effectively reproducing key statistics of the observed rainfall. In addition, the simulated drought indices were generally well correlated with that of the observed.
