  • The necessary of predicting changes in tidal regime that would caused by large coastal engineering developments has been led to increased numerical modeling of tides on the continental shelf since 1970s (Flather, 1976; Choi, 1978; Greenberg, 1979). (omitted)

  • The breakwater of surface-piercing type has been developed mainly for application within bays or estuaries that are semi-protected from the direct impact of targe waves. Most of bays have soft foundation which is too weak to bear the weight of gravity type breakwater. (omitted)

  • Since oil spills discharged by offshore oil production platforms, ship accidents etc., cause many environmental problems, forecasts of drift and spreading of the spilled oil are requested as a basis for oil spill combat management. The numerical approach has been thought as the most effective methods of such forecast. In general, the oil spill model takes into account the trajectory and fate of oil, including drifting, spreading, evaporation, dispersion, emulsification, shoreline standing, and so on. (omitted)

  • When the strong wind or long wave energy is transferred into the water body of a harbour, the harbour exhibits oscillatory resonant motions which often cause significant damage to moored ships and navigation hazards. Therefore, a number of theoretical and numerical investigations of such resonant oscillations have been carried out but most of them were limited to harbours connected with open sea of constant depth. • The seismic hazard of Korea is briefly described. The seismic design requirements design earthquake levels and design response spectrum that are going to be adopted in the future code system are introduced. Characteristics of ground motion and seismic responses of structures in low to moderate seismicity regions are briefly described. The concept of limited ductility design that seems appropriate for the seismic design in Korea is explained.
