Experimental modal analysis of transverse-cracked rails-influence of the cracks on the real track behavior

  • Rails are key elements in railway superstructure since these elements receive directly the train load transmitted by the wheels. Simultaneously, rails must provide effective stress transference to the rest of the track elements. This track element often deteriorates as a consequence of the vehicle passing or manufacturing imperfections that cause in rail several defects. Among these rail defects, transverse cracks highlights and are considered a severe pathology because they can suddenly trigger the rail failure. This study is focused on UIC-60 rails with transverse cracks. A 3-D FEM model is developed in ANSYS for the flawless rail in which conditions simulating the crack presence are implemented. To account for the inertia loss of the rail as a consequence of the cracking, a reduction of the bending stiffness of the rail is considered. The numerical models have been calibrated using the first four bending vibration modes in terms of frequencies. These vibration frequencies have been obtained using the Experimental Modal Analysis technique, studying the changes in the modal parameters of the rails induced by the crack and comparing the results obtained by the model with experimental results. Finally, the calibrated and validated models for the single rail have been implemented in a complete railway ballasted track FEM model in order to study the static influence of the cracks on the rail deflection caused by a load passing.

An enhanced method of predicting effective thickness of corroded steel plates

  • Many steel bridge infrastructures in the world are getting older, and a large number of these structures are in need of maintenance, rehabilitation or replacement. Most of them are subjected to corrosion due to exposure to aggressive environmental conditions and inadequate maintenance, causing reduction of their carrying capacities. In order to have an adequate bridge management, it is of paramount importance to develop an efficient, accurate and rapid condition assessment method which can be used to make reliable decisions affecting the cost and safety. Therefore, a simple and accurate method of calculating remaining yield and tensile strength by using a concept of representative effective thickness with correlation of initial thickness and maximum corroded depth is proposed in this study, based on the results of many tensile coupon tests of corroded plates obtained from a steel plate girder with severe corrosion, used for about 100 years. Furthermore, a strength reduction diagram which will be very useful for bridge inspection engineers to make rational decisions about the maintenance management of aged steel bridge infrastructures is presented.

  • 최근 들어 경제성장과 산업의 발달로 사회기반시설 및 주거시설 등의 건설이 활발히 이루어지면서 콘크리트용 골재의 사용량이 급증하고 있다. 그러나 천연골재는 점차 고갈되고 그 채취에 대한 엄격한 환경적인 규제 때문에 골재의 부족이 건설분야의 큰 문제로 대두되고 있어 이를 대체할 수 있는 대체재의 개발이 시급한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 철강생산 과정에서 부산물로 발생되는 제강슬래그를 잔골재의 대체재로 활용하기 위하여 유리석회를 대폭 감소시킨 급냉제강슬래그를 잔골재로 활용한 콘크리트의 물성 및 역학적 시험결과를 비교 고찰하여 그 활용 가능성과 적정대체율을 규명하였다.

Measurements and analysis of load sharing between piles and raft in a pile foundation in clay

  • This research presents the monitoring results and their interpretation on load sharing of the pile foundation during the construction of a high-rise (124 m in height) building in Bangkok, in soft clayey ground. Axial forces in several piles, pore water pressure and earth pressures beneath the raft in a tributary area were monitored through the construction period of the building. The raft of the pile foundation in soft clayey ground can share the load up to 10-20% even though the foundation was designed using the conventional approach in which the raft resistance is ignored. The benefit from the return of ground water table as the uplift pressure is recognized. A series of parametric study by 3D-FEA were carried out. The potential of utilizing the piled raft system for the high-rise building with underground basement in soft clayey ground was preliminarily confirmed.

Wireless sensor network design for large-scale infrastructures health monitoring with optimal information-lifespan tradeoff

  • In this paper, a multi-objective wireless sensor network configuration optimization method is proposed. The proposed method aims to determine the optimal information and lifespan wireless sensor network for structural health monitoring of large-scale infrastructures. In particular, cluster-based wireless sensor networks with multi-type of sensors are considered. To optimize the lifetime of the wireless sensor network, a cluster-based network optimization algorithm that optimizes the arrangement of cluster heads and base station is developed. On the other hand, based on the Bayesian inference, the uncertainty of the estimated parameters can be quantified. The coefficient of variance of the estimated parameters can be obtained, which is utilized as a holistic measure to evaluate the estimation accuracy of sensor configurations with multi-type of sensors. The proposed method provides the optimal wireless sensor network configuration that satisfies the required estimation accuracy with the longest lifetime. The proposed method is illustrated by designing the optimal wireless sensor network configuration of a cable-stayed bridge and a space truss.

다양한 기저유출 분리 방법을 이용한 4대강 수계의 시간대별 (연·계절·월) 기저유출 기여도 분석 (Analysis of Baseflow Contribution based on Time-scales Using Various Baseflow Separation Methods)

  • The analysis of baseflow contribution is very significant in Korea because most rivers have high variability of streamflow due to the monsoon climate. Recently, the importance of such analysis is being more evident especially in terms of river management because of the changing pattern of rainfall and runoff resulted from climate change. Various baseflow separation methods have been developed to separate baseflow from streamflow. However, it is very difficult to identify which method is the most accurate way due to the lack of measured baseflow data. Moreover, it is inappropriate to analyze the annual baseflow contribution for Korean rivers because rainfall patterns varies significantly with the seasons. Thus, this study compared the baseflow contributions at various time-scales (annual, seasonal and monthly) for the 4 major river basins through BFI (baseflow index) and suggested baseflow contribution of each basin by the BFI ranges searched from different baseflow separation methods (e.g., BFLOW, HYSEP, PART, WHAT). Based on the comparison of baseflow contributions at the three time scales, this study showed that the baseflow contributions from the monthly and seasonal analysis are more reasonable than that from the annual analysis. Furthermore, this study proposes that defining BFI with its range is more proper than a specific value for a watershed, considering the difference of BFIs between various baseflow separation methods.

제설제에 노출된 서울시내 도로 시설물의 열화 환경 분석 (Evaluation on De-Icing Salts Laden Environment of Road in Seoul)

  • 제설제는 동절기 도로 위의 눈을 녹이기 위하여 사용되고 있으나, 서울과 같은 대도시에서 교통이 밀집한 도로 시설물의 열화를 촉진시키는 주요 요인 중의 하나이다. 도로 시설물의 합리적인 유지관리 전략을 수립하기 위하여 제설제에 노출된 도로 시설물의 환경분석이 필요하다. 본 연구는 서울시의 적설량 및 사용된 제설제량을 토대로 외래 염소농도를 계산하였다. 평균 표면 염소이온량을 구하고자 서울시의 5년간 기후환경 및 제설제 사용량을 이용하였으며, 주간선 및 보조간선율 17.5 ~ 30%, 제설제 노출 유효면적율 50 ~ 80% 수준에서 검토하였는데, 농축 속도는 0.073~ 0.077%/년, 최대 표면 염소이온량은 콘크리트 중량대비 2.2 ~ 2.31% 수준이었다. 본 연구결과는 염소이온 프로파일의 예측 또는 콘크리트 구체의 화학적 부식정도 등으로 종합적인 유지관리 대책을 수립하는데 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

Deep learning-based anomaly detection in acceleration data of long-span cable-stayed bridges

  • Despite the rapid development of sensors, structural health monitoring (SHM) still faces challenges in monitoring due to the degradation of devices and harsh environmental loads. These challenges can lead to measurement errors, missing data, or outliers, which can affect the accuracy and reliability of SHM systems. To address this problem, this study proposes a classification method that detects anomaly patterns in sensor data. The proposed classification method involves several steps. First, data scaling is conducted to adjust the scale of the raw data, which may have different magnitudes and ranges. This step ensures that the data is on the same scale, facilitating the comparison of data across different sensors. Next, informative features in the time and frequency domains are extracted and used as input for a deep neural network model. The model can effectively detect the most probable anomaly pattern, allowing for the timely identification of potential issues. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, it was applied to actual data obtained from a long-span cable-stayed bridge in China. The results of the study have successfully verified the proposed method's applicability to practical SHM systems for civil infrastructures. The method has the potential to significantly enhance the safety and reliability of civil infrastructures by detecting potential issues and anomalies at an early stage.

SOC 시설물 재난대응 및 관리시스템 개발방향 (A Development Direction of Infrastructure Based Disaster Mitigation & Management Integrated System)

  • 제방, 댐, 교량, 도로 등 주요 시설물은 일상적인 사회 산업적 활동을 지원하기 위한 수단으로서 뿐만 아니라, 재난발생 시 인적 물적 자산을 보호해 준다는 점에서 매우 중요한 의미를 가진다. 그러나 시설물의 중요성에도 불구하고 이들을 적극적으로 활용하고 있는 재난관리시스템이 아직 개발되어 있지 않으며, 정작 재난이 발생할 때는 시설물 보호 및 활용을 배제한 대응이 이루어져 2차 3차적인 피해를 발생시키고 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 재난관리와 관련된 기존 문헌조사와 SWOT/STEEP분석, 기술수요조사와 논문 특허 경향조사를 통해, 국가적 재난관리 시스템 및 관리체계가 변화되어 가는 트렌드를 분석하였으며, 향후 효과적인 재난관리 시스템 구축을 위한 중점분야와 세부 기술 분야를 제시하였다. 본 논문에서 제안된 세부기술들은 SOC(Social Overhead Capital) 시설물 통합운영 및 연계기술 확보를 통한 선진국형 시설물 안전관리 및 재해대응을 위한 기술들로서, 기존의 인적 물적 피해저감 위주의 수동적 재난관리체계에서 시설물을 적극적으로 활용하는 능동적 대응체계로 전환하는 기반을 제공할 것이다. SOC시설물에 대한 통합적 유지관리 및 위험도 관리체계는 SOC시설물의 안전과 관련 재해예방에 관한 정책 결정자에게 합리적인 의사결정수단을 제공하고 궁극적으로 대상 SOC시설물의 안전도를 향상시키는데 기여하게 될 것이다. 특히, 장기대응(Mitigation) 또는 사후복구(Recovery)에 집중되어 있는 국내 재난관리체계에서 진일보하여, 선제적인 직전 대비(Preparedness)와 재난 발생 시 대응(Response)이 가능한 시설물 중심의 재난관리시스템 구축을 통해 전 방위적 재난대응력이 강화될 것으로 기대된다.

민간투자사업의 제안서 작성 업무 개선에 관한 연구 - 운영관리비 산정 업무를 중심으로 - (Study on the Improvement of Proposal Works for PPP Project: Focused on Operation and Maintenance Cost)

  • 사회기반시설은 국가 경쟁력 지표로써, 전통적으로 정부의 SOC 재정으로 건설되어 왔다. 그러나 SOC 예산 축소에도 불구하고 사회기반시설의 확충 요구를 해결하기 위해 민간투자사업제도가 도입되었으며, 이 중 도로사업의 비중이 높다. 본 연구는 기 제안된 도로사업 사업계획서의 운영관리비와 사업계획서와 연계되는 재무모델의 운영관리비 항목을 분석하고, 도로사업의 특성을 반영하기 위해 한국도로공사의 사업비 항목과 운영관리 업무를 분석하였다. 분석 결과를 통해 분류체계를 마련하여 비용산정 기준을 마련하는 것이 요구된다. 또한 업무의 효율성을 고려하여 기존의 업무 도구를 웹기반으로 통합하여 하나의 시스템으로 개발하는 것을 제안하였다. 이를 통해 민간투자사업의 전체적인 사업성 확보에 기여하고, 수익성을 기반으로 하는 사회기반시설의 확충에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.
