  • The transit-oriented development (TOD) model can effectively help to solve urban problems and promote sustainable urban development. The United States and Japan are widely considered the earliest two countries to start TOD practices; however, the origins of TOD models in the two countries were different. The TOD practices in the two countries formed distinct characteristics, yet their differences have been underexplored. This study aims to grasp the characteristics of the TOD model in the two countries through a systematic comparative analysis of 10 typical cities in the United States and Japan that have adopted the TOD model. This paper compares the case cities' three key aspects of the TOD model: public transit system, spatial form, and land use, and summarizes the characteristics of TOD models in the two countries from a city-level perspective, to help deepen the global understanding of TOD.

  • The adoption of ubiquitous technologies is increasing for the realization of new effective u-City services. u-City is defined as a next-generation informatization city that can innovate a city's various functions, such as improving the welfare of the citizenry, ensuring safety based on systematic urban management, improving the quality of lives, and increasing convenience in city life, by merging cutting-edge information and telecommunication infrastructures and ubiquitous information services with urban space. There is therefore a need to recognize that a successful u-City implementation strategy involves developing the previous UIS into a ubiquitous technology-based UIS and integrating UIS's various urban informations with effective u-City services. In this paper, for UIS-based u-City implementation, the intelligent integration model of urban spatial information based on interoperability is proposed.

  • Spatial information is geometrical information combined with the properties of an object. In city areas where unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) usage demand is high, it is necessary to determine the appropriate driving altitude considering the height of buildings for safe driving. In this study, we propose a data-provision method that generates the driving altitude of UAVs with a pseudo-3D building model. The pseudo-3D building model is developed using high-precision spatial information provided by the National Geographic Information Institute. The proposed method generates the driving altitude of the UAV in terms of tile information, including the UAV's starting and arrival points and a straight line between the two points, and provides the data to users. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed method, UAV driving altitude information was generated using data of 763 551 pseudo-3D buildings in Seoul. Subsequently, the generated driving altitude data of the UAV was verified in AirSim. In addition, the execution time of the proposed method and the calculated driving altitude were analyzed.

  • For the development and management of u-City(ubiquitous city), Ubiquitous City Construction Law was enacted(March 3, 2008) to form the legal basis of u-City plan, construction and managements afterwards. The ultimate goal of the u-City construction is the advancement of national territory utilization and management using Korea's high level of IT and spatial information infrastructure. Based on the definition of the u-City Construction Law, the u-City refers to a city where u-City services are provided through the u-City infrastructure applying u-City technology. But, based on the current level of relationship model among u-City service, technology and infrastructure, it is not enough to guide the local municipalities to plan and provide the successful u-City services in its vicinity. So as one of the core issues for the legal arrangements of successful u-City services, the purpose of the study is to suggest the basic directions and execution strategies for the relationship establishment among u-City service, technology and infrastructure.

  • Three-dimensional modeling of cities in the real-world is an essential task for city planning and decision-making. And many three-dimensional city models are being developed with the development of wireless Internet and location-based services that identify the location of users and provide the information increases for consumers. Especially, in case of urban areas of Korea, indoor space modeling as well as outdoor is needed due to the high-rise buildings densities. Also location-based services should be provided through spatial analysis such as the shortest path based on a space model. Many studies of three-dimensional city models are feature models. In a feature model, space is represented by combining primitives, and relationships among spaces are represented only if shared primitives are detected. So relationships between complex three-dimensional objects in space is difficult to be defined through the feature models. In this study, Navigable space-relation model(NSRM) is developed, which is topological data model for efficient representation of spatial relationships between objects based on the network structure.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the network city in detail as a new model for explaining urban growth in the changing economic environment in recent years. For this purpose, starting from Batten's (1995) pioneering work on network city in the mid 1990s to the most recent ones, literature is reviewed and various aspects of network city model are examined including formation process, spatial structure, application to management and urban planning, and growth potential. With this, the study aims at providing comprehensive knowledge necessary for evaluating if the network city model is appropriate in explaining the urban phenomena in the 21st century. The result of the review shows that network city model is the one appropriately explaining the changing urban system associated with the economic globalization and the development of transport and information technology. In addition, more and more European city governments tend to adopt this as the urban planning principle.

  • Recently, the demand of the Intelligent Transportation System(ITS) has been increased to a large extent, and a real-time traffic information service based on the internet system became very important. When ITS companies carry out real-time traffic services, they find some traffic data missing, and use the conventional method of reconstructing missing values by calculating average time trend. However, the method is found unsatisfactory, so that we develop a new method based the spatial and spatial-temporal models. A cross-validation technique shows that the spatial-temporal model outperforms the others.

  • Recently, various researches have been attempted to link or integrate BIM and GIS. In particular, some of the researches were progressed to convert the data model between the BIM standard model IFC and the GIS standard model CityGML. However, it is hard to utilize the previous research results yet because characteristics and domains of between two data models are very different, In order to obtain the correlation between BIM and GIS, in this research, we analyzed the characteristics between IFC and CityGML objects of each LOD, And, we analyzed the correlation of IFC and CityGML by performing mapping between IFC and CityGML objects from view point of building with these characteristics. In this research, based on these correlation analysis results, we proposed the efficient interrelation plan between IFC and CityGML.

  • To understand the relationship between road-traffic noise and urban components such as population, building, road-traffic and land-use, the city of Cheongju that already has road-traffic noise maps of daytime and nighttime was selected for this study. The whole area of the city is divided into square cells of a uniform size and for each cell, the urban components are estimated. A spatial representative noise level for each cell is determined by averaging out population-weighted facade noise levels for noise exposure population within the cell during nighttime. The relationship between the representative noise level and the urban components is statistically modeled at the cell level. Specially, we introduce a spatial auto regressive model and a spatial error model that turns out to explain above 85 % of the noise level. These findings and modeling methods can be used as a preliminary tool for environmental planning and urban design in modern cities in consideration of noise exposure.
