  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the landscape changes at Su-ji and Gi-heung in Young-in city using FRAGSTATS Model. Landscape Indices obtained by this model can explain the structural change of urban green zone and fragmentation resulting from development. As results of this study, Gi-heung showed worse quality of landscape in 2007, comparing 2000. However, in Su-ji, there were several better landscape indices in the same 2007/2000 comparison, even though the little shrinking of green zone and separation of core area. It could assume that the reason was caused by conservation policy of urban green zone. This study could provide the useful methods for finding the problems and searching the alternatives considering the development of urban green zone.

  • For landscape ecological management of the isolated forestlands in Incheon city located in the western tip of South Korea, the forest vegetation of Mt. Cheolma was classified phytosciologically and mapped out its spatial distribution at a scale of 1:5,000. Characteristics of forest landscape structures were discussed in terms of the number and size of patches obtained by analyzing vegetation map. Units to manage the forest vegetation were categorized into eighteen communities, seventeen groups, and sixteen subgroups. Landscape elements were classified into five types: secondary vegetation, introduced vegetation for forestry (IVF), introduced vegetation for agriculture (IVA), and other elements. Two hundred and ninety-three forest landscape patches covers 443.3ha of which IVF accounted for 316.8ha(71.5%), the largest portion, secondary vegetation for f01.2ha(22.8%), IVA for 6.2ha(1.4%), and others for 19.1ha(4.3%). The ratio of natural forest elements of 31.9% showed that this area was mainly comprised of artificially introduced vegetation, such as Robinia pseudoacacia plantation and Pinus rigida plantation. Forest landscape patches have a mean area of 4.5ha, a density of 66.1/100ha, and a diversity index of 0.87. It was estimated that differentiation of patches recognized in community level would be related to human interference and those in subordinate level to natural processes.

  • This study analyzes structural landscape changes over a time-series for a small and medium-sized city, Gangneung-Si, based on area and distribution patterns, and according to the type of land cover. Among the types of land cover, the area ratio of urbanized areas increased by 2.02% in the late 2010s as compared to the late 1980s, while there was a decrease of 2.69% in farmland and 0.69% in grassland areas. On analyzing the changes in land cover use by applying the Fragstats program, it was confirmed that landscape changes in urban and management areas were relatively severe according to the Landscape Shape Index, Largest Patch Index, and Aggregation Index. A pattern of concentrated expansion was also found around certain areas. In particular, from the analysis, it was established that the proportion of urbanized area had considerably increased and that the extent of farmland damage to management areas, including planned management areas, was large. Additionally, the Total Core Area generally indicated a reduction in the core areas of farmland and forest within urban and management areas. A medium-sized city showed significant changes besides large cities in terms of landscape structure. The developmental pressure on management areas, in particular, was quite high.

  • Due to the standardized urban development since the industrial era, many urban spaces have experienced non-placeness. Recently, although interest in urban landscape, history, and cultural elements has been increasing, landscape management and control measures are being implemented mainly in large cities due to the low status of rural areas in the country. From this point of view, this study tried to lay the foundation for basic research in related fields by classifying the characteristics and types of streetscapes located near large cities, and to suggest directions that should be considered when managing streetscapes in the future. As a result of the analysis of landscape adjectives, the village felt secluded due to the low density compared to the city street overall, but it did not have a unique image of the region. Three factors were derived through factor analysis, and preference was affected in the order of aesthetic, regularity, and uniqueness. In addition, the research site was classified into three types through cluster analysis, and it was confirmed that the differences by type were due to aesthetics and naturalness. On the other hand, the uniqueness is generally low in all regions, so it seems that fundamental countermeasures are needed.

  • This study aims to suggest improvements in night landscape lighting of Bomun Lake, a representative waterfront landscape in Gyeongju which is the city designated as UNESCO World Heritage in December 2000. This study divided the area into three types of sections-that is, road section, walking section, and landscape section- based on the present condition of land use and users of the Bomun Lake area. In addition, this study classified the lightingtypes by section into nine lighting types-that is, road, crossroad, parking lot, pedestrian passage, trail, sculpture, tree, waterfront deck-by comparing them to the park lighting types suggested by the KS A illuminance standards, and examined the problems of the current Bomun Lake lighting base on the standards. By using this as basic data, this study established relevant plans and collected research material. This study suggested directions of each of the three sections and improvements in illuminance, color temperature, creating methods of each of the nine lighting types to the night Lighting planning of the Bomun Lake area reflecting the landscape characteristics of Gyeongju, a historical, cultural city.

  • It constitutes a very important preliminary step to analyze how city image is assessed in order to determine the direction towards a desirable city image in planning on an urban landscape for future city image. This study aims to quantify the recognition and evaluation of a city image on the part of citizens, using multidimensional scaling and correspondence analysis. Furthermore, this study hopes to contribute to the quantified policy-making for improving city image by understanding how professionals and civil servants in the related field tend to recognize such image. The results from the study are as follow: 1. The image of Daejon City tends to be assessed strongly in the light of its history, dynamics, and size. While the City is recognized as new and changing in general, the civil servants consider the city as modest, and the professionals as mediocre. Therefore, the City should strive to conceive its own unique identity, which would lessen the current image of modest and mediocre. 2. Gap river, Dunsan New Town, and the Daeduk Reseach Complex turn out to be the symbolic representative venues of Daejon City, inspiring the city’s image. In contrast, Yoosung Springs, the original town, and the Expo Park do not fit the image of the City. The need to renovate these places presents itself. 3. As for the questions using “like” and “not-like”, citizens and professionals show the tendency of not liking the city’s image, whereas civil servants like it. It follows that the City needs to highlight its “modern and high-technological” image, illuminated by Dunsan New Town and Daeduk Reseach Complex. 4. An image positioning drawn from a correspondence analysis shows that the City of Daejeon can be classified as an administrative and horizontal city. As opposed to the prior simplistic analyses of city image, this study attempts to diagnose it accurately, so as to help with the gearing towards city images in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify characteristics of the landscape changes in Gwangjyu city and Icheon city, the suburban areas on the outskirts of the Seoul metropolitan area, by focusing on the causes of the urban sprawl and the resultant morphological characteristics of landscape degradation. Particular attention has been given to the 'advantages for developing suburb including geographical proximity and land price', 'institutional regulation such as land-use regulation' and 'community solidarity' as drivers for possible introduction of external factors. The types of landscape change were divided into three, after having on-the-ground research on eleven chosen towns and interviews with head of a village: Overwhelming Change, Separated and Small-Scale Change. It was found that, in general, the quality of landscape was best for the small-scale change type, followed by separated and overwhelming change types. While the types of landscape change are correlated with the geographical proximity, its relevance with land regulation is relatively weak. The study found that imposing a land-use regulation as a means to prevent changes in suburban village landscape may not be fully effective. Also it analyzed that villages could better manage with keen interest the surrounding landscape if there is a high degree of solidarity within the village community. Therefore, the sense of community could play an important complementary role to land-use regulation which does not suffice in itself to manage suburban landscape.

  • Rapid economic development in Korea caused functions of city functions such as concentration of population, deterioration of the quality of living environment and traffic congestion. Korean cities have lost their identity becausr they are merged functionally and physically with neighboring cities, forming one mesa-city. Unified shape and disorganized streets of cities often cause confusion among foreigners and visitors. It is very difficult for them to find their image in strange cities. It is, however, important to correctly analyze the image and meaning of cities for understanding its identity. The purpose of this study is to develop a method to analyze the city image by focusing on some of the main cities in Korea. For this purpose, the adjective questionnaire and multi-dimension scaling (MDS) are applied to the analysis of city image. Image analysis graph by MDS can visually present the general and integrate images. The results of this study are summarized as follows: The important factors for interpretation of city image are historical and industrial character. Seoul, Taegu and Pusan have industrial and complex city images. Kongju has historical city image, while Changwon has a modern image. Chuncheon belongs to a soft and small image. Each city has an alternative solution against a negative image, according to the image analysis graph.

  • According to the complexity and the pluralism of the modern cities, they are changing themselves into the multinoded and social - classless urban environments. The sudden drift of population to the cities is giving rise to the serious environmental problems, and the rapid increase of recreational needs among the citizen is changing the urban society into a leisure - oriented one. In order to coping with the abrupt change in the social and natural urban environments, the various fields of urban society should be co - ordinated. The study uses the green - city concept to get solves the incongruity of urban structure in Chonju City. The existing open space maps were drawn up by the various techniques such as the analysis of the topographic maps and collected data, the interpretation of the aero-photographs and the reconnaissance of site. The authors suggested the existing condition, and the problems and potentials of open space elements in Chonju City through the analysis of the existing condition maps. After synthesizing the contents of analysis, the 7u(hors established an exclusive open space system for Chonju City.
