Ascites is the retention of body fluids in abdominal cavity, which is induced by salt increase, and disorders in such things as water retention and albumin synthesis. Ascites are especially common in cases of progressed liver cirrhosis and metastatic cancer. One patient was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis and Metastatic cancer at Rt. liver from Lt. ovarian tumor by abdominal CT. To measure the response to treatment of ascites, these clinical symptoms were observed: weight, abdominal circumference, and lab findings. Clinical symptoms and ascites were improved after oriental medical treatment. Abdominal circumference decreased. Results suggest oriental medical treatment was effective for this patient for this disease, but more extensive research is needed.
The spleen is the most frequently injured organ following blunt abdominal trauma. However, delayed splenic rupture is rare. As the technical improvement of computed tomography has proceeded, the diagnosis of splenic injury has become easier than before. However, the diagnosis of delayed splenic rupture could be challenging if the trauma is minor and remote. We present a case of delayed splenic rupture in a patient with underlying liver cirrhosis. A 42-year-old male visited our emergency department with pain in the lower left chest following minor blunt trauma. Initial physical exam and abdominal sonography revealed only liver cirrhosis without traumatic injury. On the sixth day after trauma, he complained of abdominal pain and diarrhea after eating snacks. The patient was misdiagnosed as having acute gastroenteritis until he presented with symptoms of shock. Abdominal sonography and computed tomography revealed the splenic rupture. The patient underwent a splenectomy and then underwent a second operation due to postoperative bleeding 20 hours after the first operation. The patient was discharged uneventfully 30 days after trauma. In the present case, the thrombocytopenia and splenomegaly due to liver cirrhosis are suspected of being risk factors for the development of delayed splenic rupture. The physician should keep in mind the possibility of delayed splenic rupture following blunt abdominal or chest trauma.

Daekumeumja is a herb-medication which has been used for alcoholic damage. This is a report about the effect of Daekumeumja on Ascites in alcoholic liver cirrhosis. The study of abdominal CT and ultrasonography were performed to evaluate the volume change of ascites. And blood tests were done to measure the liver's and kidney's functions. Reduction of ascites is proved by abdominal CT & ultrasonography. And lab findings of liver functions showed improvement. This study suggests that Daekumeumja is probably effective in the treatment of ascites in alcoholic liver cirrhosis.

This study was carried out to investigate the antifibrotic effects of polysaccharides extracted from Garnoderma lucidum. The biliary cirrhosis was induced by bile duct ligation/scission (BDL/S) in rats. BDL/S rats were dosed 5 mg/rat/day orally for 4 weeks after the operation. Antifibrotic effects were evaluated by serum biochemical values, serum procollagen type III peptide (PIIINP) levels, liver hydroxyproline contents, and light microscopical histology. The results obtained were as follows; 1) PIIINP levels in sera of treated BDL/S group were lowered to 50% of those of untreated BDL/S group. 2) Hydroxyproline contents in the liver of treated BDL/S group were also reduced to 83% of those of untreated BDL/S rats. 3) The hepatic damage such as hepatocellular necrosis, inflammation, bile duct proliferation and fibrosis was less severe in the livers of treated rats. These results suggest polysaccharides extracted from Garnoderma lucidum to be a promising agent for the inhibition of hepatic cirrhosis(fibrosis).

This study was carried out to investigate the dose dependent antifibrotic effects of polysaccharide from mycelium of Ganoderma lucidum. The experimental hepatic cirrhosis was induced by bile duct ligation/scission (BDL/S) in rats. BDL/S rats in each group were dosed 0.5 mg, 2.0 mg, 5.0 mg or 10.O mg/rat/day orally for 4 weeks after the operation. Antifibrotic effects were evaluated by serum biochemical values, hydroxyproline contents, and light microscopical histology. The results obtained were as follows: 1) Hydroxyproline contents in liver of 5.0 and 10.0mg polysaccharide-treated BDL/S rats were significantly reduced 2) In serum test, ALT, AST, ALP values in polysaccharide from Ganoderma lucidum-treated group were lower than BDL/S control group 3) The hepatic damage such as hepatocellular necrosis, inflammation, bile duct proliferation and fibrosis was less severe in the livers of 2.0 mg and 5.0 mg polysaccharide-treated rats. These results suggest that polysaccharide from mycelium of Ganoderma lucidum to be a promising agent for the inhibition of hepatic cirrhosis.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is typically associated with obesity and insulin resistance. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a more serious form of NAFLD. Although fibrosis is common in pediatric NASH, cirrhosis has been rarely reported. Patients with hypothalamic or pituitary dysfunction are at risk for obesity and insulin resistance with subsequent development of NAFLD. We report a case of NAFLD progressing to cirrhosis in an obese 16 year-old boy with hypopituitarism.
Background: The diagnosis of esophageal varices (EV) is based on the findings of esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), biopsy, and serum markers. Thus, noninvasive cost-effective tests through which high-risk EV children can be diagnosed are needed. Purpose: This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the noninvasive markers for EV in children with liver cirrhosis. Methods: A total of 98 children with liver cirrhosis were evaluated in this study. The spleen size, platelet count, serum albumin, liver function test results, and risk scores were evaluated prior to endoscopy. The endoscopic investigations aimed to identify the presence of EV and red signs, and determine varices sizes. Results: Endoscopy revealed varices in 43 subjects (43.9%). The spleen size, platelet count, international normalized ratio, aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index (APRI), platelet count to spleen size ratio, and risk score differed significantly between patients with and without EV on univariate analysis; however, the logistic regression analysis showed no differences, indicating that none of these parameters were independently associated with the presence of EV. Conclusion: Platelet count, risk score, platelet count to spleen size, and APRI can be useful tools for the identification of high-risk patients with EV and might reduce the need for invasive methods like EGD.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to report a clinical case of decompensated liver cirrhosis in a patient with jaundice who showed improvement with Korean medicine treatment. Methods: A patient with decompensated liver cirrhosis with jaundice was treated with herbal medicine (Injinoryung-tang, Galgeunjowi-tang), acupuncture, cupping, and moxibustion. Changes in jaundice, fatigue, and dysuria were measured with subjective parameters. Liver function was checked by performing a blood test 8 times. The levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), total bilirubin (TB), albumin, and platelets (Plt), prothrombin time (PT), and international normalized ratio (INR) were recorded. Results: The Korean medicine treatment improved jaundice, fatigue, and dysuria and lowered the AST, ALT, ALP, GGT, and TB levels. Conclusions: Korean medicine treatment containing Galgeunjowi-tang positively improves clinical symptoms and liver function.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to report the possibility of treatment of liver cirrhosis with traditional Korean medical treatment. Methods A 57-year-old man diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma and liver cirrhosis was admitted to Wonkwang University Oriental Medical Hospital in August 2014. He underwent liver lobectomy and later experienced abdominal pain, anorexia, and insomnia. To control cirrhotic ascites and prevent relapses, he opted to receive HangAmDan-B (HAD-B) and cultivated wild ginseng herbal acupuncture therapy. Results After treatment, the volume of ascites decreased and the patient&’s symptoms such as abdominal pain and anorexia improved. Conclusions This report suggests that HAD-B and cultivated wild ginseng herbal acupuncture therapy may play a therapeutic role in liver cirrhosis occurring after liver lobectomy.
Liver cirrhosis is characterized by hyperaccumulation of fibrous tissue components and is commonly observed in latter or terminal states of chronic hepatic diseases. In this study, the antifibrotic effects of GLM001 on liver cirrhosis were examined in bile duct ligated rats and patients with hepatic diseases. GLM001 (250 mg/kg rat weight/ day) was administrated to cirrhotic rats for 4 weeks and to humans for 14 weeks. Bile duct ligated rats significantly increased liver collagen content and biochemical markers of hepatic injury. Liver histology showed collagen fiber deposition was increased and the normal architecture was lost with large zones of necrosis being observed frequently. GLM001 administrated rats showed significantly decreased liver collagen content, and accumulation of collagen fiber in histological analysis. Patients, who were treated with GLM001, showed decreases in biochemical markers of hepatic diseases. These results demonstrate the usefulness of GLM001 as an antifibrotic agent for liver cirrhosis.
