  • In order to examine the effect of constant excitation on nonlinear interactions in vibrating modes of circular plates, we added a constant term to a harmonic excitation. A two-degree-of freedom system is derived by using the Galerkin's procedure. The system is shown to have quadratic and cubic nonlinearities subjected to a harmonic excitation.

  • This paper present as experimental demonstratio of DSP and a sensory actuator that is used to actively control sound transmission/radiation through a vibrating plate. A plane acoustic wave incident on a clamped, thin circular plate was used as a noise source, and a sensory actuator bounded to the plate was used to control and sense vibration of the plate. The sound transmission reduction problem was tranformed as a structural vibration control problem that actively control the structural vibration modes coupled to acoustic modes. The results show that the first structural vibration mode is controlled with a reduction of 78 percent in the displacement and velocity of the plate. This corresponds to a 13dB reduction in the acoustic response. These experimental results indicate that a sensory actuator bounded to the plate can be employed to attenuate the sound transmitted to radiated from the plate.

  • An analytical method to estimate the coupled frequencies of the circular plate submerged in fluid is developed using the finite Fourier-Bessel series expansion and Rayleigh-Ritz method. To verify the validity of the analytical method developed, finite element method is used and the frequency comparisons between them are found to be in good agreement. For the perforated plate submerged in fluid, it is almost impossible to develop a finite element model due to the necessity of the fine meshing of the plate and the fluid at the same time. This necessitates the use of solid plate with equivalent material properties. Unfortunately the effective elastic constants suggested by the ASME code are found to be not valid for the modal analysis. Therefore in this study the equivalent material properties of perforated plate are suggested by performing several finite element analyses with respect to the ligament efficiencies.

  • A study of free vibration of axisymmetric circular plates based on Mindlin theory using a pseudospectral method is presented. The analysis is based on Chebyshev polynomials that are widely used in the fluid mechanics research community. Clamped, simply supported and flee boundary conditions are considered, and numerical results are presented for various thickness-to-radius ratios.

  • In this article, free vibration of functionally graded (FG) elliptic plates subjected to various classical boundary conditions has been investigated. Literature review reveals no study has been performed based on functionally graded elliptic plates till date. The mechanical kinematic relations are considered based on classical plate theory. Rayleigh-Ritz technique is used to obtain the generalized eigenvalue problem. The material properties of the FG plate are assumed to vary along thickness direction of the constituents according to power-law form. Trial functions denoting the displacement components are expressed in simple algebraic polynomial forms which can handle any edge support. The objective is to study the effect of geometric configurations and gradation of constituent volume fractions on the natural frequencies. New results for frequency parameters are incorporated after performing a test of convergence. A comparison study is carried out with existing literature for validation in special cases. Three-dimensional mode shapes for circular and elliptic FG plates are also presented with various boundary conditions at the edges.

  • A theoretical formulation for the analysis of free vibration of clamped-free cylindrical shells with plates attached at arbitrary axial positions was derived and it was programed to get the numerical results which yield natural frequencies and mode shape of the combined system of plate and shells. The frequencies and mode shapes from theoretical calculation were compared with those of commercial finite element code, ANSYS as well as modal test in order to validate the formulation. The effects of the thickness and location of the plate were evaluated.

  • This study deals with the free vibration of two identical circular plates coupled with a bounded or unbounded fluid. An analytical method based on the finite Fourier-Bessel series expansion and Rayleigh-Ritz method is suggested. The proposed method is verified by the finite element analysis using commercial program with a good accuracy The case of bounded or unbounded fluid is studied for the effect on the vibration characteristics of two circular plates. Also, the effect of gap between the plates on the fluid-coupled natural frequencies is investigated.

  • An analytical method for the free vibration of two circular plates coupled with an inviscid and compressible fluid is developed by the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The fluid is bounded by a rigid cylindrical vessel and two circular plates with an unequal thickness and diameter. It was found that the theoretical results could predict well the fluid-coupled natural frequencies with an excellent accuracy when compared with the finite element analysis results. As the fluid thickness increases or the plate thickness difference increases, an abrupt curve veering in the natural frequency loci of the neighboring modes and drastic changes in the corresponding mode shapes are observed. The mode localization frequently appears in the higher modes and in the wide gap between the plates because of a decrease in the fluid coupling owing to the fluid dispersion effect.

  • This paper deals with the free vibration of two identical circular plates coupled with a bounded fluid. An analytical method based on the [mite Fourier-Bessel series expansion and Rayleigh-Ritz method is suggested. In the theory, it is assumed that the ideal fluid is filled in a rigid cylindrical container and the two plates are clamped along the plate edges. The proposed method is verified by the finite element analysis using commercial software with a good accuracy. Two transverse vibration modes, namely in-phase and out-of-phase, are observed alternately in the fluid-coupled system when the number of nodal circles increases for the fixed nodal diameter. The effect of gap between the plates on the fluid-coupled natural frequency is also investigated.
