Following the previous works on the natural frequency of heaving circular cylinder, i.e. Lee and Lee (2013) and Kim and Lee (2013), an investigation of the same spirit on the 2-dimensional cylinder of Lewis form has been conducted. As before, the natural frequency is defined as that corresponding to the local maximum of the MCFR (Modulus of Complex Frequency Response), which is given by the equation of motion in the frequency domain analysis. Hydrodynamic coefficients were found by using the Ursell-Tasai method, and numerical results for them were obtained up to much higher frequencies than before, for which the method was known as numerically unstable in the past. For a wide range of H, the beam-draft ratio, and ${\sigma}$, the sectional area coefficient, including their practical ranges for a ship, results for the natural frequency were computed and presented in this work. Two approximate values for the natural frequency, one proposed by Lee (2008) and another one by the damped harmonic oscillator, were also compared with the current results, and for most cases it was observed that the current result is between the two values. Our numerical results showed that the values of the local maximum of MCFR as well as the natural frequencye increase as ${\sigma}$ increases while H decreases. At present, extension of the present finding to the 3-dimensional ship via the approximate theory like the strip method looks promising.
Shock-focusing concave reflectors can have parabolic, circular or elliptic cross-sections. They produce effectively a very high pressure at the focusing point. In the past, many optical images have been obtained on shock focusing via experiments. Measurement of field variables is, however, difficult in the experiment. Using the wave propagation algorithm and the Cartesian embedded boundary method, we have successfully obtained numerical Schlieren images that appear very much like the experimental results. In addition, we obtained the detailed field variables such as pressure, velocity, density and vorticity in the unsteady domain. The present numerical results have made it possible to understand the shock focusing phenomenon in more detail than before.
In this paper, preconditioning method is parallelized on fast-ethernet PC cluster. The algorithm is based on scaling the pressure terms in the momemtum equations and preconditioning the conservation equations to circumvent numerical difficulties at low Mach numbers. Parallelization is performed using a domain decomposition technique(DDT) and message passing between sub-domains are taken from the MPI library. The results are shown to have good convergence properties at all Mach number on the circular arc Bump and are capable of reasonable predicting two-dimensional turbulent flows on DCA compressor cascade.
One of the most important performance criteria related to the gain tuning of controller for CNC machining center is the contour error. This study analyzed circular error by the axis-matched and mismatched cases. To reduce ellipse and radius error, it is necessary to set the gain for each axis to be same bandwidth and high response. Based on the analysis in the frequency domain, we simulate feed system by mathematical model and then predict bandwidth of each axis. For analysis of structure vibration while the each axis is moving, we try the various of measuring method and position loop is improved by jerk limit.
Periostin, a component of extracellular matrix (ECM) protein, is produced and secreted by the fibroblasts that are involved in chronic allergic inflammation diseases and various types of human cancers. Periostin protein is composed of multiple domains including four FAS1 domains which play important roles in cell adhesion and tumor metastasis by interacting with integrins. In spite of their important biological role, the structural information of periosin FAS1 domains was not revealed yet. Recently we systemically prepared various constructs of the FAS1 domains and tried to express them in E. coli. Of them, only single FAS1-II and -IV domains were highly soluble. Circular dichroism (CD) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies revealed that the FAS1-IV domain might be suitable for three-dimensional structure determination using NMR spectroscopy.
A microwave incoherent imaging method for a conducting cyliner by using multi-frequency tiem-harmonic field is presented in this study. In this paper, an incoherent intensity pattern of th econducting cylinder is obtained by averagin gout the multi-frequency intensities of the coherent field such as the time-harmonic field scattered from this cylinder. This phenomenon is hsown numerically in scattering by a conducting circular cylinder illuminated by the time-harmonic plane wave, and is interpreted analytically by the mutual coherence functon defined as a frequency-averaged intensity of the time-harmonic fields in th frequency domain.
A far field approximate solution of the slowly varying force on a 3 dimensional offshore structure in gravity ocean waves is presented. The first order potential, or at least the far field form of the Kochin function, of each frequency wave is assumed to be known. The momentum flux of the fluid domain is formulated to find the time variant force acting on the floating body in bichromatic waves. The second order difference frequency force is identified and extracted from the time variant force. The final solution is expressed as the circular integration of the product of Kochin functions. The limiting form of the slowly varying force is identical to the mean drift force. It shows that the slowly varying force components caused by the body disturbance potential can be evaluated at the far field.
This paper presents the vibration characteristics of an intelligent cantilever beam in contact with a fluid using a PZT actuator and PVDF film. The dynamic behaviors of a flexible beam-water interaction system are examined. The effect of the liquid level on free vibration of the composite beam in a partially liquid-filled circular cylinder is investigated. The coupled system is subject to an undisturbed boundary condition in the fluid domain. It was found that the coupled natural frequencies decreased with the fluid level for the identical composite beam due to added mass effect. In case of the free-free boundary condition, the natural frequency gently decreased at fluid water level betw...
The theoretical method is developed to investigate the vibration characteristics of the sloshing and bulging mode for the circular cylindrical storage tank with an annular plate on free surface. The cylindrical tank is filled with an inviscid and incompressible liquid. The liquid domain is limited by a rigid cylindrical surface and a rigid flat bottom. As the effect of free surface waves Is taken into account in the analysis, the bulging and sloshing modes are studied. The solution for the velocity potential of liquid movement is assumed as a suitable harmonic function that satisfies Laplace equation and the relevant boundary conditions. The Rayleigh-Ritz method is used to derive the frequency equation of the cylindrical tank. The effect of Inner-to-outer radius ratio and thickness of annular plate and liquid volume on vibration characteristics of storage tank is studied. The finite element analysis is performed to demonstrate the validity of present theoretical method.
The Discrete Element Method adopting particles for the domain discretization has recently been adopted in fracture studies of non-homogeneous continuous media such as concrete and rock. A model is proposed in which the reinforcement is modelled by 1D rigid-spring discrete elements. The rigid bars interact with the rigid circular particles that simulate the concrete through contact interfaces. The DEM enhanced model with reinforcement capabilities is evaluated using three point bending and four point bending tests on reinforced concrete beams without stirrups. Under three point bending, the model is shown to reproduce the expected final crack pattern, the crack propagation and the load displacement diagram. Under four point bending, the model is shown to match the experimental ultimate load, the size effect and the crack propagation and localization.
