  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the snowmelt effects on the hydrological components, especially on the runoff, by using the soil water assessment tool(SWAT) which is a continuous semi-distributed long term rainfall-runoff model. The model was applied to the basin located in the upstream of the Chungju Dam. Some parameters in the snowmelt algorithm were estimated for the Chungju basin in order to reflect the snowmelt effects. The snowmelt effects were assessed by comparing the simulated runoff with the observed runoff data at the outlet of the basin. It was found out that the simulated runoff with considering the snowmelt component matches more satisfactorily to the observed one than without considering snowmelt effect. The simulation results revealed that the snowmelt effects were noticeable on March and April. Similar results were obtained at other two upstream gauging points. The effect of the elevation bands which distribute temperature and precipitation with elevation was analyzed. This study also showed that the snowmelt effect significantly affects the temporal distribution as well as quantity of the hydrological components. The simulated runoff was very sensitive to the change of temperature near the threshold temperature which the snowmelt can occur. However, the reason was not accounted for this paper, Therefore, further analyses related to this feature are needed.

  • It will be a real good news for the people who were lost their hometown by the construction of a large dam to be restored to the former state. Focused on Cheung-Pyung around where most part were flooded by the Chungju large Dam founded in early 1980s, we used Remote Sensing Technique in this study in order to restore topographical features before the flood with 3 dimensional effects. We gathered comparatively good satellite photos and remotely sensed digital images, then we made a new color image from these and the topographical map which had been made before the flood. This task was putting together two kinds of different timed images. And then, we generated DEM including the outskirts of that area as harmonizing current contour lines with the map. That could be a perfect 3D image of Cheung-Pyung around before when it had been flood by making perspective images from all directions, north, south, east and west, for showing there in three dimensions. Also, flying simulation we made for close visiting can bring us to experience their real space at that time.

  • Chungju reservoir is a multipurpose dam lake located at the upstream of Nm Han river and known as having the biggest watershed and the second water volume in korea. Conclusions are made as follows. 1. Environmental characteristics of the reservoir appear to be as follows. Chungju reservoir has long hydaulic retention time, 60-160 days. Water column has oxygen depletion zone in hypolimnion. Chungju reservoir is found to be in the midst of eutrophication. Chlorophyll-a and other physical parameters are found to be significantly dependent. 2. Nitrogen to phosphorus ratio was 50-350 for the water samples taken from the reservoir in 1996. It is very important clue for water quality management in relation to phytoplankton growing kinetics. Variations in chlorophyll-a contents appear to be related closely to total phosphorus concentration.

  • A heavy storm hit the central part of the Korean Peninsula especially on the Chungju Dam Basin from the 9th to 12th of September 1990. The Chungju multipurpose dam is the largest water project in Korea completed in 1986. The storm recorded a peak inflow of about $21,000m^3/sec$ at the dam site which is equivalent to 500 to 1000 years recurring frequency according to the designed concept. Extensive hydrological analyses including field investigation were performed to identify the storm. The result of the field investigation showed that 6 gages among the 22 telemetering rain-gages located in the basin were proved to be out-of-normal operation during the storm. The corrected basin average rainfall was estimated to be 458.6 mm ranging from 206 to 665 mm. The correction of the rainfall depth included the adjustment of the rainfall depths of the 6 gages using the Kriging interpolation technique, and adjustment according to the heights of the gage mouths. For the maintenance and operation of the Chungju Dam, new design floods were suggested from the trend analysis which showed that the design flood have to be increased because of the increasing tendency of the annual flood peaks.

  • In this study, a model for analyzing the spatial effect of large dam reservoirs on local hydrometeorology was developed, and then actually applied to the Seomjingang Dam, Soyanggang Dam, Andong Dam, and Chungju Dam. The application included the analysis of land use using the satellite images to derive the change in albedo before and after the dam construction. Summarizing the modeling procedure and its application results are as follows. (1) The change in albedo was found to be closely related with the size of the dam, also the spatial limit of albedo change were estimated to be 10-20km for the Seomjingang Dam, 40km for the Soyanggang Dam, 20-30km for the Andong Dam, and 50km for the Chungju Dam. (2) The change in the coefficient of recycle (ratio of internal supply of moisture to the total available moisture) was found to be big within the narrow boundary of the. dam, but become smaller as the boundary becomes larger. (3) The correlation between the albedo and. coefficient of recycle was found high. Thus, it could be concluded that the change in land use due to dam construction has much effect on the moisture circulation structure. (4) The spatial range of hydrometeorogic effect was compared with the water surface area of dam reservoir. The result showed that the spatial range sensitively increased up to $50km^2$ of water surface area.

  • Slopes near a dam body can be categorized into 4 groups, such as right and left abutment slopes, reservoir slopes, slopes along the access road and slopes along the relocated road. For each of the geological investigation, the design standards, the evaluation methods of safety and the maintenance methods, both abutment slopes in the four dams have different characteristics from the conventional cut slopes in that they can severely affect the dam safety. From this point of view this study compares and analyzes the geological investigation methods, the status of design and construction, evaluation method of safety, and monitoring & maintaining methods for four major dams in Korea, such as Soyanggang dam, 'Andong dam, Chungju dam and Boryong dam.

  • In this paper, the water quality forecast was performed on the BOD of the Chungju Dam using the ARIMA model, which is a nonlinear statistics model, and the artificial neural network model. The monthly data of water quality were collected from 1991 to 2000. The most appropriate ARIMA model for Chungju dam was found to be the multiplicative seasonal ARIMA(1,0,1)(1,0,1)$_{12}$, model. While the artificial neural network model, which is used relatively often in recent days, forecasts new data by the strength of a learned matrix like human neurons. The BOD values were forecasted using the back-propagation algorithm of multi-layer perceptrons in this paper. Artificial neural network model was com- posed of two hidden layers and the node number of each hidden layer was designed fifteen. It was demonstrated that the ARIMA model was more appropriate in terms of changes around the overall average, but the artificial neural net-work model was more appropriate in terms of reflecting the minimum and the maximum values.s.

  • This study shows consolidation properties resulted from the experiment made on changes by load increment ratio and consolidation duration of standard consolidation test using deposit soil of Chungju Dam. Though the comparison and analysis of the result turned out that void ratio by load increment ratio was unchanged greatly, the result was inclined as followes : the smaller load increment ratio is, the bigger void ratio is, while the bigger load increment ratio is the bigger settlement is. Also coefficient of consolidation is increased in inverse ratio to load increment ratio. Coefficient of permeability is increased in proportion to load increment ratio, it is not fixed changes by consolidation duration, however. Degree of consolidation is increased to load increment ratio.
