  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to report the clinical progress of a patient exposed to a Sauve-Kapandji procedure after being diagnosed with dislocation of distal radioulnar joint and was treated using Korean medicine rehabilitation treatment. Methods : During the admission period, the patient was treated with acupuncture, cupping, herbal medicine, and Chuna therapy. The clinical progress was assessed by using range of motion(ROM), manual muscle test(MMT), numeric rating scale(NRS), and pain disability index(PDI). Results : After receiving the above treatments, the active ROM and motor grade of the elbow, wrist, and finger joints were improved; the NRS and PDI were decreased. Conclusions : Although this is a single case report, Korean medicine rehabilitation treatment, including Chuna manual therapy, might be an effective intervention for a patient after being exposed to a Sauve-Kapandji procedure.

  • Objectives This review was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and clinical significance of Chuna manual therapy (CMT) in the treatment of pediatric cough. Methods Ten electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, CNKI [CAJ], KMBASE, KISS, KISTI, NDSL, RISS, and Oasis) were searched. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using CMT for pediatric cough treatment were included. The methodological quality of each RCT was evaluated using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool (v1.0). Results Nine RCTs met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis revealed positive effects of CMT in the treatment of pediatric cough. Both CMT alone and CMT combined with Chinese medication or Chinese medicine acupoint application (CMAA) were effective in treating pediatric cough. Conclusions This systematic review shows the reliability, effectiveness, and clinical significance of CMT in the treatment of pediatric cough. However, the evidence is limited due to the defective design of the included RCTs. More well-designed RCTs are required to provide clearer evidence for this claim.

  • The purpose of this study is to report the case of a patient with idiopathic Parkinson's disease treated with scalp acupuncture and Chuna manual therapy. A total of 10 sessions of scalp acupuncture and Chuna manual therapy were performed. At the beginning of the treatment, the Korean version of modified Barthel index (K-MBI) was 25 points, and the range of motion (ROM) of both knee joints was 150° in passive flexion, while active movement was impossible. In addition, both knee joints were flexed and contracted at -40° on the right and -30° on the left. Over the course of treatment, the ROM of both knee joints improved to -20° on the right and -10° on the left. The patient was even able to maintain a standing position and was allowed to walk approximately 10 steps with support. Temporary improvement was observed as a result of applying scalp acupuncture treatment and Chuna manual therapy to a patient whose symptoms were gradually worsening.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine search trends and their meanings for major uninsuired Korean medicine (KM) treatments through analysis of an online portal search results. Methods: Keywords searches were performed using Naver Datalab on 4 July 2023. From January 2016 to June 2023, monthly relative search volume (RSV) for keywords 'pharmacopuncture', 'Chuna', and 'needle-embedding therapy', and 'herbal decoction' were extracted with a score between 0 and 100. For the obtained RSVs, longitudinal changes over time, characteristics according to sex and age group, and correlations between them were investigated. Results: The ranking of RSV for each keyword has changed from 'Chuna', 'herbal decoction', 'needle-embedding therapy', and 'pharmacopuncture' to 'Chuna', 'herbal decoction', 'pharmacopuncture', and 'needle-embedding therapy' after 2019. Overall, the RSV of needle-embedding therapy continuously decreased, while that of pharmacopuncture continuously increased. In 2019, a rapid increase in the RSV of Chuna was observed, and in 2020, a rapid increase in the RSV of herbal decoction was observed. There was a difference in the longitudinal change pattern of RSV for the keywords by age group. Importantly, in the elderly, changes in RSV were observed in a favorable pattern to KM treatment. Conclusion: Our findings enable estimation of the public's interest and its changes for the four uninsuired KM treatment, and can be used as basic data to strengthen health insurance coverage in Korea. Specifically, changes in interest in KM treatments according to sex and age can be referred to.

The cervical Chuna treatment was done twice a week, for a total of 8 times. We evaluated the change of each group by using Yanagihara's unweighed grading system. Results : Yanagihara's score in group A was significantly improved during each period from the first visit to four weeks later. However, Yanagihara's score in group B was significantly improved except during first week. The improvement of Yanagihara's score in group A is higher than group B during every period. And significant differences were shown after two weeks from the first visit between the two groups. Patients with chronic pain after spondylolisthesis posterior lumbar fusion surgery received complex Korean medicinal treatment with Chuna manual therapy during hospitalization. Numeric rating scale (NRS) in the degree of 0-10 and Oswestry disability index (ODI) were measured before and after treatment. Results Case 1 had an improved NRS score from 7 to 4, and Case 2 had an improved NRS score from 7 to 5. In addition, ODI score improved in both cases. Conclusions Complex Korean medicinal treatment with Chuna manual therapy is effective for relief from chronic pain after posterior lumbar fusion surgery.
