Larval Development of Chthamalus challengeri Hoek (Cirripedia: Thoracica: Chthamalidae) with Keys to Barnacle Larvae of Korean Coastal Waters

  • Chthamalus challengeri Hoek was collected from intertidal rocks to rear the larvae from hatching through nauplius to cyprid in the laboratory. Larval development consists of six nauplius stages and a cyprid. Unilobed labrum with a prominent protuberance and the frontolateral horns folded under the anterior cephalic shield margin are diagnostic features through all nauplius stages. The posterior border of the cephalic shield bears no posterior shield spines in nauplius stages IV-Ⅵ. There is a specific hispid seta in the fourth group of the antennal endopodite. Morphological features such as the cephalic shield, labrum, abdominal process, antennules, antennae and mandibles in all nauplius and cyprid stages are illustrated and described. The numerical setations of the antennule are found to aid in the intraspecific identification of barnacle nauplius stages without dissection. The keys to each stage of the barnacle larvae in Korean coastal waters are provided based on the reared nauplii of seven species: Pollicipes mitella Octomeris sulcata, Chthamalus challengeri, Balanus albicostatus B. trigonus, B. amphitrite, and B. improvisus inhabiting Korean coastal waters.

Spatial Species Diversity of Macrobenthos in the Intertidal Zone of Hwasoon, Jeju Islands (화순 조간대 저서 대형무척추동물의 공간적 종다양성에 관한 연구)

  • The distribution and seasonal changes of the intertidal macrobenthos community was performed on five intertidal rocky stations of Hwasoon at Jeju Islands September 1999 to August 2000. The macrobenthos was composed of six phyla, 13 classes, 24 orders, 49 families, and 97 species. The dominant species of the upper zones were Nodilittorina exigua, Notoacmea schrenckii, Liolophura japonica and Patelloida saccharina. Those of the middle zones were Monodonta labio, Chthamalus challengeri, Siphonalia japonica and Liolophura japonica. Those of the lower zones were Siphonalia sirius, Patelloida saccharina, Chthamalus challengeri, and Liolophura japonica. The community dominance indices of the upper zones were much higher than those of the middle and lower zones. Species diversity and evenness in all investigated zones were highest in station 1 and lowest in staton 3. But, species richness was highest in station 1 and lowest in station 4.

  • 저자들은 1963년~1978년 사이에 남한의 38개 지점으로부터 채집된 따개비류를 관찰한 결과, 이 중에서 15종 2 아종이 동정 분류되었으며 아래의 7종 2아종은 한국 미기록이므로 이를 기재하여 발표하고저 한다. Octomeris sulcata, Chthamalus challengeri, Chelonibia patula, Chirona (Striatobalanus) amaryllis, Solidobalanus (Hesperibalanus) hesperius hesperius, Balanus reticulatus, Btrigonus, Megabalanus rosa, M. volcano.

  • Species composition, community structure and biodiversity of marine benthic community were studied in the intertidal zone of Seoam, Busan. A total of 75 species of benthic marine plants including 4 Cyanophyta, 6 Chlorophyta, 17 Phaeophyta, 47 Rhodophyta and 1 Magnoliophyta are listed. The dominant marine plants were melobesioidean algae, Chondracanthus tenellus, Sargasium thunbergii, Corallina spp., and Phyllospadix japonica and Ulva pertusa was added in summer. Chthamalus challengeri and Mytilus edulis were dominant zoobenthic species in the upper and middle intertidal zone. The algal species diversity index based on coverage was 1.81; 2.25 from frequency; 2.19 from average of total frequency and coverage, and 1.80 from importance value. The algal diversity indices estimated from different sources were quite different. This means that the index value changes depending on the sources used to calculate the species diversity index, indicating how important it is to select the based data and that it is necessary to standardize the methodology when studying later the algal diversity index. On the other hand, the number of species identified in this study has been found to be reduced by 65% at highest, compared with the result of the investigation that was conducted in the coast of Busan.

Monthly Variations of Cirriped Larvae near Oryuk Islets off Busan, Korea (부산 인근 오륙도 주변에 출현하는 만각류 유생의 월별 출현 양상 변화)

  • Monthly variations of cirriped larvae near Oryuk islets off Busan were investigated at four stations from January 2012 to January 2013. Zooplankton was vertically collected, using NORPAC net (mouth 45 cm, mesh $200{\mu}m$), from the surface to 1 m above the bottom. 12 species belong to five genera of 4 families were identified including one unidentified species. Cirriped larvae occupied small portion of total zooplankton, ranging 0.02 to 4.1% of total zooplankton densities. The densities varied monthly from $1inds.m^{-3}$ to $715.1inds.m^{-3}$, which was highest in September and lowest in February. Chthamalus challengeri, Balanus glanula, B. improbisus, B. nubilus and Octomeris sulcata were dominant species and accounted for 70.1% of total cirriped larvae. Larval densities of cirripeds between stations were not significantly different (F=0.237, p=0.870). The larval communities were grouped into two groups by cluster analysis. We discussed the distribution patterns of cirriped larvae in relation to oceanographic characteristics in the study area.

Community Structure of Macrobenthos at the Intertidal Zone of Jukbyeon in the East Coast of Korea (동해안 죽변 조간대 저서동물의 계절적 군집 구조)

  • This study was carried out to analyze the community structure and distribution of macrobenthos at the intertidal zone of Jukbyeon in Uljin-gun during 2015-2016. The number of species were total 41 from 5 phyla. The species composition of Cnidaria 4, Mollusca 19, Annelida 3, Arthropoda 13, Echinodermata 2 and the individuals was $1,642inds./m^2$ and the weight was $1,959.42gWWt./m^2$ in the study area. The dominant species of the upper zones were Chthamalus challengeri and Nodilittorina radiata. Those of the lower zones were Mytilus galloprovincialis, Nipponacmaea schrenckii and Chlorostoma turbinata. The dominant species of the upper zones of winter and spring were C. challengeri, the summer and autumn of the N. radiata. Those of the lower zones were all seasonal of M. galloprovincialis. As a result of cluster analysis, those regions were divided in three groups, which were a group A of December 2015, August 2015 and February to August 2016 of intertidal zone lower, group B of December 2016 and May 2015 of intertidal zone lower, group C of intertidal zone upper.

Biodiversity and Community Structure of Marine Benthic Organisms in the Rocky Shore of Dongbaekseom, Busan

  • Species composition, community structure and biodiversity of marine benthic community were studied in the rocky shore of Dongbaekseom, Busan. A total of 82 species of marine algae including 4 Cyanophyta, 11 Chlorophyta, 20 Phaeophyta and 47 Rhodophyta are listed. The dominant algal species were Ulva pertusa, Chondria crassicaulis, Corallina spp. and Melobesioidean algae. Sargassum thunbergii, Chondracanthus intermedia, Gelidium divaricatum and Ralfsia verrucosa were subdominant in cases of different seasons and vertical layers. Chthamalus challengeri, Littorina brevicula and Mytilus edulis were dominant zoobenthic species upper-middle layer of the intertidal zone. The community structure of this area seemed to be controlled by spatial competition with benthic marine algae. The species diversity indices estimated from different sources were quite different. Indices from coverage were 1.87, 3.98 from frequency, 2.26 from the average of total frequency and coverage and 2.15 from importance value. The similarity indices on the present study showed decreasing trends comparing to the previous benthic algal composition researches.

  • The authors examined intertidal and sublittoral balanomorph barnacles which were collected from 38 localities in South Korea during the period from 1963 to 1978. 2. Identified and classified materials are composed of 15 species and 2 subspecies, all of which are described, under 10 genera and 5 damilies, of which 2 species and 1 subspecies are new to Korea as follows: Chelonibia patula, Chirona (Striatobalanus) amaryllis, Solidobalanus (Hesperibalanus) hesperius hesperius. 3. As dominant species, Chthamalus challengeri and Tetraclita squamosa japonica are widely distributed in Korea through East Sea, South Sea and Yellow Sea. 4. Balanus albicostatus and B. kondakovi are commonly found in intertidal brackish waters of Yellos Sea and South Sea, whereas, B. trigonus and Megabalanus rosa are typical sublittoral forms.

Community Structure and Vertical Distribution of Macrobenthos in the Mussel Bed on the Goijeong Rocky Shore in Jinhae (진해 괴정 암반 조간대 담치대의 대형저서동물 군집구조 및 수직분포)

  • The fauna associated with mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) beds and vertical distribution of macrobenthos were studied on the Goijeong rocky shore in Jinhae Bay, Korea. Sampling was conducted seasonally using a quadrate from January to October, 1998. In the first experiment, to reveal the community structure of macrobenthos in mussel bed, a total of 62 species $(10,690ind./m^2,\;3,802.1\;g/m^2)$ were identified, which included polychaetes $(32\;spp.,\;52.6\%),$ molluscs (16 spp.), crustaceans (10 spp.), and others. The density-dominant species were Pseudopolydora antennata, Nereis heterocirrata, Littorina brevicula and Balanus kondakovi. And the density of associated fauna was correlated with that of mussel (r=0.951, p=0.049). In the second experiment, to reveal the vertical distribution of macrobenthos on the rocky shore, ANOVA showed highly significant differences between the density of top 5 dominant species (Chthamalus challengeri, Littorina brevicula, Balanus kondakovi, Septifer virgatus and Granulilittorina exigua) and tidal levels (P=0.000). Vertical distribution of macrobnethos was characterized by Ghthamalus belt and Balanus-Septifer belt in the mussel bed.

Spatial Distribution of Marine Invertebrate Communities on Intertidal Rocky Shore in Dokdo (독도 암반조간대 무척추동물군집의 공간적 분포)

  • To determine the spatial distribution of marine invertebrate communities in intertidal rocky shore on Dokdo, 10 times investigation was carried out at 7 stations during the year of 2009~2011. The marine invertebrate community can be divided into three different groups based on cluster analysis of Bray-Curtis similarity. As a first group, the pebble beach community, Omphalius rusticus, Monodonta perplexa, and Chlorostoma lischkei which were movable gastropod with dominant occurrence. Secondly, the still rocky shore community, O. rusticus, Serpulorbis imbricatus and Aplysia kurodai occurred dominantly. Finally, the wave-exposed rocky shore community which dominantly occurred by two sessile arthropods, Barnacles, Chthamalus challengeri and Pollicipes mitella. The three groups were likely to be determined by texture of substrate and hydrodynamic conditions of rocky shore in Dokdo. The results indicated that diversity of marine intertidal invertebrate community around Dok do was mainly affected by habitat characteristics and the surrounding physical properties.
