Microtexture and components of 7 glass bead fragments excavated from Andong tumulus in Gildu-ri, Goheung have been analyzed to determine the characteristics of their weathered condition as well as chemical compositions. Firstly, status of microtexture shows that there is a large quantity of pollutants which were presumably transferred from the buried environment into the surface and the gap of the cracks. The examination has displayed that there are less amount of alkali metal components such as sodium (Na) and potasium (K) in the gap of the cracks than on the surface. The chemical compositions analysis has confirmed that two samples belongs to potash glass group ($K_2O-SiO_2$), four to soda glass group ($Na_2O-SiO_2$), and one to the mixed alkali glass group. Chromophoric elements of the glass varies by different colours: blue and navy are cobalt (Co); greenish blue is copper (Cu) and iron (Fe); and light brown is Fe respectively. Such kind of scientific analysis of the excavated glass beads will contribute to the understanding of interchange between various local cultures and arts within the southwest region of Korean Peninsula during the 4th and the 5th centuries.

As the positive feedback between the absorption of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and acceleration of ice melt can impact the aquatic biota and dynamic heat budget, long-term monitoring of the CDOM variation in the polar ocean is necessary. However, the monitoring of CDOM is not easy because of harsh weather and difficult access, especially in the Antarctic Ocean. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to find a suitable long-term monitoring site for CDOM variation; we selected Maxwell Bay and Marian Cove at Sejong Base and horizontal and vertical distributions of CDOM were measured. After a 72 hr time-series measurement test of the CDOM variation at Sejong Dock and Sejong Cape in Maxwell Bay, Sejong Dock was selected, as it does not haveland discharge effects. The seasonal variation of CDOM was evident and the average CDOM concentration of Maxwell Bay was comparable with the adjacent sea. The CDOM at Sejong Dock from February to November 2010 was the highest in the fall and winter and the lowest during spring and summer. Thus, based on our one-year CDOM data, we suggest that Sejong Dock in Maxwell Bay is suitable for long-term monitoring of CDOM as an indicator of photochemical and biological environmental change and an important factor in determining the heating budget in the Antarctic Ocean.

In this study, we evaluated the production and photoreactivity of CDOM of two polar phytoplanktons - Phaeocystis antarctica and Phaeocystis pouchetii, in order to find out UV effects on phytoplanktons. In visible region, CDOM in media of both phytoplanktons under UV-R decreased during 48hrs incubation period. However, in UV region CDOM decreased 30 % in the media of P. antarctica, but increased 10% in media of P. pouchetii, compared to CDOM concentrations of control after 48 hr incubation. This result indicates that biota in polar environment would not well protected from UV-R harmful effect when P. antarctica is dominant because of loss of CDOM, but when P. pouchetii is dominant species, production of UV absorbing organic matter could play more efficiently for UV screening for marine biota. Also we confirmed that FDOM of humic substance (C-peak) produced by these phtoplanktons under UV-R stress were well matched with fluorescence characteristics of the UV-protecting compound, MAAs. This finding shows that Phaeocystis pouchetti with low photoreactivity would contribute to DOM pool of polar marine environment under stratification by global warming.

The donor-${\pi}$-acceptor (D-${\pi}$-A) chromophoric dye system has received great attention in variety fields such as electroluminescent materials, sensors and optoelectronic devices. There are many research activities focused on the development for abovementioned application materials with the high-performance properties. In the previous work, we are reported that novel D-${\pi}$-A dye, 2-[4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzylidene]-2,3-dihydroinden-1-one, is successfully attained and exhibited a positive fluorescence solvatochromism. In this work, the molecular structure and packing geometry of 2-[4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzylidene]-2,3-dihydroinden-1-one was discussed by their conformational structure. Their single yellow prism crystal having approximate dimensions of $0.30{\times}0.10{\times}0.10$ mm was carried out with a Rigaku RAXIS RAPID imaging plate area detector with graphite monochromated $CuK_{\alpha}$ radiation. Their crystal structure were solved by using the CrystalStructure crystallographic software package.
Routinely applicable HPLC assay procedures for the ganglioside content in various deer antler preparations were established through the creation of a UV-absorbing chromophoric substance - trans-${\alpha},{\beta}$-unsaturated-hexadecene-aldehyde - from the sphingosine moiety in ganglioside molecules by two step chemical reactions. In order to guarantee the assay's accuracy and sensitivity, the HPLC-assay procedure adopted internal reference procedures by mixing cis-${\alpha},{\beta}$-unsaturated-hexadecene aldehyde[V] or cis-3-heptadecene- 1,2-diol[IV] to assay samples. The internal reference compound [IV] or [V] was synthesized in our laboratory starting from mannitol-diacetonide through three or four step organic reactions. This new HPLC-assay procedure was successfully applied to deer antler extracts with good dose-dependent calibration curves at the picomole level of gangliosides.

The majority of dyes belong to the chromophoric class known as donor-acceptor systems, the essential structural feature of such systems being the presence of one or more electron donating groups conjugated to one or more electron withdrawing groups via an unsaturated bridge. The indigo molecule may be formally divided into two identical electron donor/acceptor subsystems, each containing an add number of pi electrons, two subsystems being joined by carbon-carbon double bond. Indigoid type dyes which show a strong colour change on protonation or dissociation have many potential functional applications, for example as analytical pH indicators, solvent polarity indicators, and in various imaging and reprographic systems.
New series of phthaloperinone dyes were synthesized by the condensation reaction between tetrachloro-phthalic anhydride, 2,3-naphthalene dicarboxylic anhydride and o-phenylenediamine, 1,8-diaminonaphthalene, 1,2-diaminoanthraquinone. These dyes absorb at around 370-490nm. It was found that introduction of naphthalene and anthraquinone moiety on the perinone system produces a large bathochromic shift of 100nm. The synthesized dye 7 containing anthraquinone moiety in perinone chromophoric system exhibited superior heat stability and bright color as yellow chromophore. New dye 7 have been investigated in terms of interacting with volatile organic compound(VOC) $EtNH_2$. The sensing behaviour of the dye 7 toward $EtNH_2$ was studied by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. Sensing mechanism of dye 7 to $EtNH_2$ was supported by theoretical calculations based on DFT method.
The polarization characteristics of poly(vinyl alcohol)-iodine complex, (PVA-KI system) prepared by the oxidation process of PVA film containing a potassium iodide (KI) were investigated. The UV-visible spectrum of the PVA-KI system polarizing film showed avsorption bands corresponding to $I^{-}$, $I{_3}{^-}$ and $I{_5}{^-}$ chromophoric species at 220 nm, 290~360 nm, respectively. The polarization efficiency and transmittance of PVA-KI system film were significantly influenced by oxidation time, stretching ratio and concentration of KI. The prepared polarizing film exhibited a high polarization efficiency(99.5%) and transmittance(45%). Especially, the heat resistance of the polarizing film was higher than that of a commercial PVA-$I_2$ polarizing film. It may be argued that the result should come from a difference in oxidation process of PVA polarizing film.

Dyeing properties of cotton and ramie fabrics with pine needles colorants were studied by investigating the analysis of pine needles colorants, the effect of dyeing conditions (such as dye concentration, dyeing temperatures and times on dye uptakes), effect of mordants, and color change. The various colorfastness of dyed fabrics were evaluated for practical use; in addition, the antimicrobial ability, ultraviolet-cut ability, and deodorant ability were estimated. In the UV-Visible spectrum, the wavelength of the maximum absorption for pine needles extract was 285nm, and pine needles colorants produced a yellow color. From FT-IR and GC-MS results, it was assumed that chromophoric substance from pine needles extracts were mixed with flavonol tannin and flavanol tannin. An increased dyeing concentration resulted in a larger dye uptake and a Freundlich absorption isotherm was obtained. A larger dye uptake occurred as the dyeing time and temperature increased. Post-mordanting was more effective than pre-mordanting and the dye uptake of fabrics improved by mordanting. The colorfastness of dyed fabrics showed a low rating; however, colorfastness to washing and dry cleaning of cotton fabrics mordanted with N.Cu, and friction fastness of ramie fabric mordanted with Cu improved. The dyed fabrics showed very good antimicrobial abilities of 99.9%. In addition, the ultraviolet-cut ability and deodorant ability improved in fabrics dyed with pine needles extracts.

The dyeing properties of cotton fabrics with bamboo colorants were studied by investigating the analysis of bamboo colorants, the effect of dyeing conditions (dye concentrations, dyeing temperatures and times on dye uptakes), effect of mordants, and color change. The various colorfastness of dyed fabrics were evaluated for practical use; in addition, the antimicrobial ability, ultraviolet-cut ability, and deodorant ability were also estimated. In the UV-Visible spectrum, the wavelength of the maximum absorption for bamboo stems and leaves extracts was found to be 280nm and 295nm, respectively; in addition, bamboo colorants produced a yellow color. From the FT-IR and GC-MS results, it was assumed that the chromophoric substance from bamboo extracts was composed of flavones substances with tricin. An increased dyeing concentration resulted in a larger dye uptake and a Freundlich absorption isotherm was obtained. A larger dye uptake occurred as the dyeing time and temperature increased. The post-mordanting was more effective than pre-mordanting. Mordants, Fe and N.Fe, were effective for an increased dye uptake. The color of fabrics mordanted with Cu and N.Cu changed to GY. Regardless of mordanting, the colorfastness on the washing of dyed fabrics showed a low rating compared to other fastness. Mordanting adversely affected the lightfastness of dyed fabric. The dyed fabric showed very good antimicrobial abilities of 99.9%. In addition, the ultraviolet-cut ability and deodorant ability improved in cotton fabric dyed with bamboo extracts.
