Three wood coffins of Chosun Dynasty period buried about 450 years ago were excavated in the sound condition in Andong area in the early 1998. The proprietors of wood coffins were grandparents, Mr. Myoung Jong Lee and Mrs. Mun, and their grandson, Mr. Eung Tae Lee, and the social standing of their family was known to belong to the nobility in those days by the clan genealogy. All the wood coffins investigated through light microscopy had same anatomical characteristics as follows: abrupt to somewhat abrupt tracheid transition from earlywood to latewood; normal longitudinal and horizontal resin canals with thin-walled epithelium; tylosoids in resin canals; bordered pits frequently in 1 row on radial walls of tracheids; 1 or 2 window-like pits per cross-field; uniseriate and fusiform rays; heterogeneous rays composed of body ray parenchyma cells and marginal ray tracheids or homgeneous rays composed of only ray tracheids; dentate ray tracheids; occasional trabeculae traversing tracheids in radial direction. Based on theses microscopic characteristics, all the wood coffins were identified to be Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) or Korean black pine (Pinus thunbergii). Korean black pine growing naturally in coastal area might not be probable because the site of excavation, Andong area, was mountainous and inland area of Korea Thus, Korean red pine was thought to be the possible species for the wood coffins because of its natural distribution through the Korean Peninsula and the easy availability.

Extract of Japanese red pine needles has been used in Asia pacific regions since long periods believing its valuable properties as tonic and ability of curing diseases of unidentified symptoms. Some selective compounds present in the extract and their effects were analyzed. Carbohydrates and vitamin c were identified using HPLC; terpenoid compounds by GC-MS; anti-bacterial analysis by paper discs, plates count and gastrointestinal motility by whole cell patch clamp. The extract is a mixture of compounds therefore its diverse effect was expected. Self-fermentation in extract proceeds after spontaneous appearance of yeast strains without inoculation. Effects and composition of the extract vary with varying period of self-fermentation. Extract inhibits the growth of bacteria dose dependently exhibiting its antibacterial properties however effectiveness increases with increase in fermentation period. The extract also can modulate gastrointestinal motility in murine small intestine by modulating pace maker currents in ICC mediated through ATP sensitive potassium channel.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of adding autogenous bone to the toothash-plaster mixture in the healing process of bone. Full-thickness round osseous defects with the diameter of 20mm were made at the calvarial bone of adult dogs (n=19) bilaterally, which were thought to be critical size defect. The right defects were repaired with the toothash-plaster mixture plus autogenous bone (compressed volume 0.3cc) and the left defects with only toothash-plaster mixture. At 2-, 4-, 8-, 12- and 20- week after implantation, dogs were sacrificed and evaluated the osseous healing of bony defects clinically, radiographically, and microscopically. The results were as follows; 1. At the clinical observation, the wound healed very well without any problem except severe swelling in the early period after operation. Slight depression was recognized at the both sides when the portions of cranial defect were palpated. 2. There were statistically significant differences between toothash-plaster mixture groups and autogenous bone added groups at the same period, and among the groups in the bone density of the digital radiograms (P<0.001). There was a tendency that bone density was increasing with time. 3. In light microscopic examination, new bone formation was more active in the autogenous bone added groups than toothash-plaster mixture groups at the early period after implantation but there is little difference at 20-week after implantation. 4. In fluorescent microscopic examination, the fluorescent band could be observed at the area of active bone formation and the band was more distinct in the autogenous bone added groups then toothash-plaster mixture groups. 5. In transmitted electron microscopic examination, organelles such as rER, Golgi complex and secretory granule and osteoblast were observed. In summary higher volume ratio of autogenous bone is needed to improve the bone healing in that there is little difference between toothash-plaster mixture group and autogenous bone added group at the 20-week after implantation in spite of new bone formation was more active in the autogenous bone added groups than toothash-plaster mixture groups at the early period after operation.
The present study was attempted to investigate the characteristics of epibatidine on secretion of catecholamines (CA) from the isolated perfused model of the rat adrenal gland, and to establish the mechanism of action. Epibatidine $(3{\times}10^{-8}\;M)$ injected into an adrenal vein produced a great inhibition in secretory response of CA from the perfused rat adrenal gland. However, upon the repeated injection of epibatidine $(3{\times}10^{-8}\;M)$ at 15 min-intervals, CA secretion was rapidly decreased after second injection of epibatidine. However, there was no statistical difference between CA secretory responses of both 1st and 2nd periods by the successive administration of epibatidine at 120 min-intervals. Tachyphylaxis to releasing effects of CA evoked by epibatidine was observed by the repeated administration. Therefore, in all subsequent experiments, epibatidine was not administered successively more than twice only 120 min-intervals. The epibatidine-induced CA secretion was markedly inhibited by the pretreatment with atropine, chlorisondamine, pirenzepine, nicardipine, TMB-8, and perfusion of $Ca^{2+}-free$ Krebs solution containing EGTA, while was not affected by diphenhydramine. Moreover, the CA secretion evoked by ACh for 1st period $(0{\sim}4\;min)$ was greatly potentiated by the simultaneous perfusion of epibatidine $(1.5{\times}10^{-8}\;M),$ but followed by time-dependently gradual reduction after 2nd period. The CA release evoked by high potassium $(5.6{\times}10^{-8}\;M),$ for 1st period $(0{\sim}4\;min)$ was also enhanced by the simultaneous perfusion of epibatidine, but those after 2nd period were not affected. Taken together, these experimental data suggest that epibatidine causes catecholamine secretion in a calcium dependent fashion from the perfused rat adrenal gland through activation of neuronal cholinergic (nicotinic and muscarinic) receptors located in adrenomedullary chromaffin cells. It also seems that epibatidine-evoked catecholamine release is not relevant to stimulation of histaminergic receptors.
This paper is a comprehensive study of mathematics education in the Chosun Dynasty. The basis of this work relies on actual historical records from the period. As shown in the records, mathematics education during the Chosun Dynasty remained at the level of basic arithmetics. The arithmeticians of the Chosun Dynasty did not have an understanding of more complex mathematical thought. But the simple arithmetics of the Chosun Dynasty facilitated the building up of a unique merchant 'middle class.' So this paper examines the development of mathematics in the Chosun Dynasty through middle class. Although the Chosun Dynasty arithmetics occupy a significant part of mathematics history, this paper details why their thought did not evaluate more advanced mathematical theories.
As for the taboo of dress and its ornaments which was applied to only populace one-sidedly mainly under the power structure of feudalistic centralization of government like Chosun dynasty, the aspect of taboo was diversified all the more by having relation with various phenomenon of social structure characteristics, and the taboo items to be given in accordance with the flow of time shows the diversity. Especially, the structure of dress and its ornaments in Chosun period showed the side of social position relation and luxury control, and the taboo of dress and its ornaments which was derived from the current thought about China was given frequently. To respect the frugal virtue and moderate the life has relation with the stream of the times in individuals or nations. And, that it is externalized is dress and its ornaments. As the luxury about dress and its ornaments was serious in accordance with times, it appeared by having relation with whole economic question of nations. Then, this researcher thought this by relating this to the culture of customs. This researcher thought that the luxury about clothing gets to go to extremes and the law and order collapses, according as public morals get to be very lax. And, it can be said that the way to be able to control this is that the customs should be thoroughly obeyed and that the system to be able to play the role of braking is taboo. So, this researcher thinks that it is significant to examine the achievement which has contributed toward the life of dress and its ornaments by successive kinds on the basis of a true record of the Vidynasty and other all sorts of literatures about the real situation of prohibition order which has been from the first king to Kojong at the last period of nation. The criticism and taboo about luxury which have been discussed at Chosun period may be subdivided into some kinds in accordance with the subjects. But, in this tests, as it sis the real situation that the case to be due to the lavish necessary articles for marriage which is coming to fore as our social problem nowadays is increasing remarkably, this researcher tries to examine the taboo about the marriage luxury at Chosun period in the order of successive generations. Thus, before examining the taboo of marriage luxury, this researcher tries to examine about the taboo of textile luxury and study the taboo of marriage luxury, as the marriage luxury governs almost everything of textile luxury and it is regarded as the origin of marriage luxury, especially. And, this researcher tries to study as to how was the penal regulations based on it at the same time.
The purpose of this study was to trace and identify the origin and the meanings of the word ho-su(胡袖) of Chosun dynasty period. Findings of this study can be summerized as follows : The original meaning of the word ho-su(胡袖) is a name of round sleeves. Later it was used as a name of a dress with round sleeves. The word ho-su as a name of a dress is an abbrecviated form of ho su so o za(好袖小 子) of a previous period. The word jyo go ri(赤古里) in historical documents is anothor name of so o za(小 子). Wearing the ho-su(胡袖) was restricted to royal family women. It was included in royal women\`s wedding garments as ordinary use. Colors of this dress was used as a means of differentiating the rank and position of the wearer.
The excavated costume of Jangheung Ma's included jeogoris, skirts, and pants, and a jungchimak(중치막), jangot(장옷), cheolrik(철릭), and jikryeong(직령). Most of the items were made of silk and cotton. The clothes for shrouding were plainer than those found in other regions. The method of sewing was mostly broad-stitching, but backstitch, hem tacking and decorative saddle stitching were also used. Unlined clothes were made with on old method of sewing(옛쌈솔), which was used mainly in the early period of the Chosun dynasty. Dating of the excavated costume can be determined by examining the collar of the Korean coat or jacket, the shape and form of sleeve, the size of the sub, and the form of gusset. Straight, diagonal, and broad sleeves were the most commonlyused shapes of sleeve in the middle period of $17^{th}$ century. In the latter period of Chosun, the trend moved towards a single-sub.

The hull form of $\boxDr$Tamna Sullyokto$\boxUl$ ancient envoy ship for shipping and foreign trade in Choson period were transformed and developed in accordance with their voyage and regional routes. It is not easy to presume the hull form and the structural form of Envoy ship of choson period. This paper aims to present material concerning the ancient ship of $\boxDr$Tamna Sullyokto$\boxUl$ by analysing ancient voyage sea route and war ship history of Chosun period of the $\boxDr$Tamna Sullyokto$\boxUl$ ancient ship.
The purpose of this study was to identify and to trace origins of the names of boshon(보션) and Chung(쳥) used in Chosun period. Comparative linguistic analytical approaches were employed for this research. Conclusions and summary of finds and results of this study can be summarized as follows: It was found that the name, boshon had its origin in Aramaic, while the name, chung had its origin in Chinese. The word, boshon (보션) is a transliteration of Aramaic pattashehon, leggins. The name, boshon is a borrowed word from Aramaic. The word, bai shu(背戍) of Koryo period and the word, boshon(보션) of Chosun period were originated in one word, ai shu was taken from a singular form, while boshon was taken from a plural form. Because these two words in Koran have different phonetic values, ′they ar treated as tow different words. The name, chung(쳥) is a transliteration of Chinese cheuan, ch′"uan, Korean chung is a corrupted form of cheunan or ch′"uan.
